thx for not posting this in the sc2 section. The majority of this interview really is about BW content, as Jaedong commited the most time in his carrier to BW.
Omg this interview was so awesome thank you Thorin!!! Maybe just me but I thought there were some times in the interview where Jaedong reflecting on his BW days almost made him tear up or something especially when he talked about Courage and about Flash. And the interview series is called "Reflections." :O aptly named! lol I wish Jaedong expanded on some of his questions since quite a lot of his answers were pretty broad. Woulda loved to hear him talk about ZvZ micro or the popularization of late mech and how it impacted the ZvT matchup. really really cool interview though thank you!
Great interview, thanks for this Thorin! I've gotten the idea before, from reading interviews, that he thinks his confidence and mentality make up his strongest attribute, and this really confirms that. It's also interesting that he doesn't have much to say about several of the things fans seem to spend a bunch of time thinking about and discussing (silver curse, etc)... he just plays the game and focuses on winning.
Funny that he called players by their names sometimes and by their IDs other times. I thought Koreans used players' real names pretty much exclusively... is that some evidence of his time around foreigners?
Jaedong is the only zerg I appreciated. Just seeing him at the stage would give me this impression of confidence and power, something I've never perceived on Flash.

Well JD have caught numerous of times w/ his pants down by Flash....

I agree with your impression of Jaedong; he's amazing, but you must not have been watching when Flash carried KT to victory in Winner's League and SPL while nursing a possible career-ending injury. You can't tell me that's not powerful perseverance and confidence.

I watched this match live at the studio with Vlanitak and kjwcj. Our jaws literally dropped at the conclusion of the match. Only someone like Jaedong could have done that.
Really nicely prepared questions, was some good insight into Jaedong's mindset when he was an amateur and b-teamer and his thoughts about Flash.
Also, Jaedong 3:2 Bisu in Averatec-Intel Classic and also that time when they met online where JD lost the first 2 games then proceeded to win 10 in a row and Bisu was like who that f*** is this zerg and found out later it was Jaedong.

Well Jaedong was already Jaedong at this time Edit : ah you mean when they met online okay. I remember a FlaSh interview when he said it has been exactly the same for him when he met Bisu online. He was winning everygame and became arrogant (according to himself) then Bisu showed him. Thanks for the interview !
interview doesn't adress the main question : when will he start streaming bw on afreeca and join sospa ? cuz modesty / zero / larva / hero won't cut it...
You're on a roll today Thorin :D Great interview, keep'em coming. I have not watched "Reflections" before, is the shorter length [than the avarege "Grilled"] specific to this one or it's normally like this?
As much as I respect Bisu, the reason why he never really face Jaedong in the later stage of a tournament is because he didn't make it that far since his last msl -_- Nothing to do with chance -_- it's Bisu not playing good enough and being knocked out by a lesser player just after group stage -_-
And the only time it happened was for wcg 2009 and we know the result.
2/0 for the dong, though I think Bisu was already on his downfall (about official games) while Jaedong was at his best.
It's incredible how much effort they must put in practice, and it's reassuring to hear him say "I was losing 9 games out of 10" -_-
keep training pauline, keep training!
Did Jaedong look depressed or it is just me? Why is he blinking his eye so much, man I am worried for his mental health -_-

I suspect it could be because the translator used the IDs. I've noticed 'inuh' doing that when translating live during events.

Jaedong himself only calls other players by their korean names. For example when they talk about Bisu, he says 김택용 :-)

And he refers to Flash as "Phlesshee" which was hilarious.

No I'm pretty sure he said Bisu sunsu probably because the translator was saying Bisu. edit: also he's talking to a white dude and to Jaedong's understanding this interview would mainly be for the foreign audience so I think using player IDs would be right.

He's doing much better than he first started although he got eliminated in WCS AM Premier RO16(or 32?) which was surprising to say the least. I'm sure he'll be back stronger than ever
Thorin you are an excellent interviewer and you find some really interesting questions and historical links to go back on and discuss. Really enjoyed this!

Yeah, the practice results are actually pretty weird cause from interviews, it basically seems like JD never lost there but then would lose the broadcasted game.

As of now, Jaedong is slightly ahead on head to head score. When we asked if things were any different during practice, “I lost all the games” Bisu remarked stiffly. Jaedong laughed awkwardly and mentioned that he thinks he may have lost some of them. It seems Bisu remembers the encounter during practice more clearly.
There are more examples too but dont feel like digging them up atm ie where Bisu says JD did dumb allins and lost but then when JD played macro games after, Bisu kept losing. I think Zimp even uploaded 2 of those practice games because it referenced Circuit Breaker.
So, applying the above, JD would prob win if they ever met on Afreeca as it's more of a relaxed practice atmosphere (but I dont ever see JD going that route for a variety of reasons so it's moot) but would lose in stuff like SSL.

He's one of the best, although not QUITE at his level of BW dominance. He's probably a top-10 player, although he has a knack for losing upset matches against Protoss 2-base all-ins and some Thor-heavy Terran styles. Very flashy player though, pardon the pun, as he shows up in highlight reels more or less every edition.

I dunno, JD has made it pretty clear in interviews that he has been looking ahead to a life beyond gaming for a while now ie looking for a woman that matches his maturity to marry and also the following
TG=Unfortunately there is not much time left. Now I am really glad that our time is up (laughs). For this last part, please tell your fans about your dreams.
JD=It's a secret (laughs). I'm just kidding. A long time ago, somebody asked me what I would do with a million dollars. I didn't know what to say back then but now I think I can answer that question. I would like to buy my parents a house with a nice view. Then, I would like to buy a house for my future wife and me (laughs). My dreams aren't grandiose and magnificent; I have a lot of aspirations for my progaming career, but if I look at the big picture, my ultimate goal is to have a loving family and live happily ever after. I am just doing my best to achieve that dream at each and every given moment.
This is also why he has been so motivated in sc2 too as he earns the money needed to realize his dreams and gets to travel the world while meeting his fans. (can't do this on afreeca)

Jaedong and Bisu did play a best of 5 series in the GOMTV Averatec-Intel Classic Season 2 Special Match, and Jaedong won 3-2. Additionally, Jaedong typically does exceptionally well in best of series, and in tournament situations, and adapts well to various adverse situations (e.g. unexpected situations, being down - in best of series), and has an unparalleled will to win. Bisu does not (it's been mentioned before, Bisu is very successful when he can prepare for a specific situation, but in a best of series, on a variety of different maps, in a variety of different situations, he will be significantly less successful - also he has exceptional fundamental mechanics, but his understanding of the game(e.g. build order strategy/development) is relatively poor compared to players like Stork, Best, Jaedong etc. (mentioned in interviews)). Additionally, Bisu typically has problems against players like Shine, in individual leagues, and going 3-2 against Larva B teamer in SSL? A poor indicator. Based on the above, Jaedong would be favored in both practice and individual leagues.

Add the rust factor in and the fact that Larva was playing like a top-tier A-teamer for his SSL run and I'd have to say that it's a dead even match. TBLS matches have always brought out the best in each other, and I honestly think that if Jaedong and Bisu were to have a Bo5 title match, Bisu would pull out all the stops to practice like he would have before when he was still in SKT T1.

Typical fanboy analysis.
Recent official results in what had been widely considered the most important league (Proleague) speak otherwise.
Please do more of these, and please interview some BW pros other than TBLS or bonjwas. I think we've had enough of coverage of jaedong and need more interviews with players who weren't the best, but still deserve an interview. Thanks for this one however, it was very well done.
I really liked this interview and the questions. If anyone was to ask me to summarize Jaedong's BW career, I would probably point him/her to this video from now on (apart from the wiki page, of course!).
Well, maybe more. Even though I was/still am a Flash fan (I'm Terran player), I will always have massive respect for Jaedong. (and Stork and Bisu along with many others). The guy is just pure passion and competitor, it's hard to not like him. I remember cheering for him when he was playing against Fantasy in Batoo OSL final and Bacchus OSL semi-final.
Bisu vs Jaedong OSL would have been something indeed...if only Bisu didn't choke against Fantasy in Batoo.... Or if Jaedong didn't get steamrolled by Flash's mech on Katrina (which incidentally was the 1st Flash vs Jaedong game I ever watched and had a big influence on me eventually deciding to choose Terran)

Don't forget his woes against go.go. His terran kryptonite lol.
Five championships and four silvers in major leagues. Jaedong is truly a legendary Broodwar player, and it was nice to hear him talk about his career. This interview made me kind of sad thinking back on the days when Flash was so astoundingly good. Thanks for the interview!
P.S., I think JD would have owned Bisu in series play, and he was right there in the finals so it's really Bisu's fault for not rising to the challenge :p
Omg this interview just blew me away, totally awesome. Thank you so much, I've been a Jaedong fan for quite a while but this just makes me want to cheer for him more. First "reflection interview" I watch but most other interviews I see of SC2 players are just so... Not serious, just goofing off. That really reflects their attitude towards the game compared to JDs, this guy so passionate.
I think of all the Brood War pro games, Jaedong is the player I miss the most. His attitude is superb and it always came through in his games and in his expression. <3 Legend Killer.
Great job man, the Tyrant is simply outstanding, i cant think of another way to put it out, u see him talk and u can already realize he'es just something else. From what he sais, it can be seen that his greatest fortitude is his unbreakable state of mind. A truly Champion, that kid just blows my mind. Long live JD, the best of all.
I didn't see this interview, thanks for bumping the thread. As a former progamer and as a poker player right now I understand that the mindset is the only difference between reaching your goals and failing to do so. Even when Jaedong was a nobody the fact he would be a champion was real to him and eventually he made it real for everybody else too. There is a lot to learn and appreciate from these interviews, and watching something like this is probably more important than playing a thousand games without the desire to win.
Thank you. I really enjoyed the interview. I liked the questioned, the clear editing, everything. I love seeing bw/sc2 related videos that are professional grade. Cheers!
