What was suggested was a much more advanced system, tailor-made for replays, in order to make this advanced searching easy and intuitive. exactly <3 btw, another function that might be helpful would be some kind of implementation of tagging... dunno if it would be worth it, but it might be nice to be able to add a few tags to each replay. For example, i could tag certain replays with "muta harass" or "defilers" if there's a game that demonstrates something particularly well. So like a "comments" functionality?

yea, exactly.
btw, if anyone starts a thread on bwprogrammers.com, link to it here and i'll update the first post.

OK guys, so I'll try to make a list of needed features ; please discuss/add new ones !
- Search engine on various fields : number of players, player names, races, map, (map tileset ?), game type (FFA, Melee, One on One...), game date, game duration, game version. File size ? Maybe replay names, could be useful but not very reliable. Winner/Loser could be very nice too, but I don't know if it's technically doable.
- Ability to comment a replay (and search on it ?)
- Ability to share/unshare directories or sub-directories (like, "I want to share all my maps/replays directory, except the "micro training" sub-directory").
- Ability to detect duplicates.
- Can connect through corporate firewalls (will depend on the implement but I'd be glad to have this :D)
- Simple interface, nothing fancy
- Ability to start the application with Windows
I might have missed obvious things, so feel free to comment !

Thanks to both of you Another thing I just thought of :
- A simple client with no interface that could be run on Unix-like OS so that every good site which is up 24/7 can share its replays at no cost. I especially think of PGT, WGT and GG.net ; they have a huge database of replays so if we give them the ability to share them easily, it could be a great added value to the community.

I know it has nothing to do with replays but if people could share their vods that would be even better

I don't think that's really the point ; replays would be easy to share because they are small (like 300 KB max), so anyone with a decent connection can download one in less than 1 minute. VODs are a completely different thing, they eat up lots of bandwidth during long periods of time. Moreover, people having tons of VODs will generally burn them to DVDs, making the files unaccessible. And there's TL.net's tracker already
So the goal of this application would be to share small, easy-to-share files so that people won't be bothered by doing so.
About the features, I have questions :
- what about leechers ? Do we want to allow people to download without sharing ? To me the answer is yes, why not.
- should we make a user feature ? Like when you download something, you can see who you're downloading from ; further than that, we could also show people who have the replay you want but who are not online ATM.

And i don't want to commit all my free time to develop something that would help to distibute such a stuff

no, sth like overnet for replays ;-)

This looks really cool, but not really what we're talking about. It's nice though!

When i saw it, i was amazed. Really.

Really GJ. But maybe i'm bit retarded but when i'm browsing replays how i can go back to single player screen (in normal mode there is cancel button) ?

Its a nice idea but why not make something more simple than a p2p program, for exemple create an online replay database & a simple db browser client that allow anybody to upload their own replay on it. The db will grow by itself quickly and it will be easier to find/share something than a p2p application because you dont have to be connected to be able to share some reps (imo). client may be look like this :

Wow there will be sooooooo much fakereplays on this if it succeeds, but still useful I guess.

I think the best p2p program to model this after would be DirectConnect. Only downside with DC is that servers (hubs) that host DC servers have to be kinda beefy, due to how its searching mechanism works. However, it'd work quite well with this, as it supports userlisting, chat, along with easy searching. Considering the rather low popularity I would expect with this program (not low like 5 users, but rather 100-300) starting out, believe a server of this type would require something along the lines of a 10Mbit connection to run soundly. So, I suppose the downside of that specific protocol wouldn't affect it too negatively.
Anyway, just a suggestion. Also, Taiche, within the searching, searching by build order would be an extremely useful feature to have. No longer would we have requests for replays of certain build orders in the strat forum, as someone could just figure out the basic build and find all the replays that display it.
