I don't see any point in new server. Iccup and Fish are good enough. As a player with a normal life and logs in to play a couple matches for nostalgia or for fun, you may be completely right. As an (ICCup)admin, it's a stressful hellhole to be part of. Bugs that have been unfixed for years, no support from the higher ups, the lack of tools, and the list goes on. For ICCup to optimally function with all of its issues, it needs a much bigger team of admins than it currently has, which it'll never get, because everyone wants to play of course. Getting your points from a match or getting a hacker banned can potentially take 2 weeks and possibly more. Did I forget to mention that there are multiple ways to bypass the antihack, all of which won't get patched even if information is provided on how to solve the problem. I start thinking about how similar this is to how Kerrigan got ditched on some random planet with no hope for help to arrive(and then she comes back as a pain in the ass) Mentioning that there are several ways to bypass the antihack isn't a good idea. Well not every antihack is perfect to begin with, ICCup didn't hire top notch security experts and programmers to create their antihack so there's bound to be some flaws. By nature, hackers will win.

I'd much prefer to use iCCup and just fix it up but as already mentioned, the iCCup admin has refused our help. The second option would be for Fish to be made non-Korean friendly, but that's unlikely. StarServer is the third option. The fourth is to leave things as they are and allow iCCup to continue stagnating. I want to help out the BW community and also get some experience in programming, hence me starting this project.

So what have you made so far?

Anti-hack, most of auto-matchmaking, and I'm redoing the website with some friends from uni because production had stalled and we're making it much better! We've thought of a better way of doing the "launcher" which will become more obvious on release. Basically you'll be able to keep using mcalauncher/wlauncher/chaoslauncher or whichever you prefer instead of having to use our one, but there'll still be anti-hack and auto-matchmaking and so on.

How exactly will the auto-matchmaking work? Server throws you into a lobby? What about latency problems for users that doesn't have ports open?

Imo best thing is to release whats been done open-source, maybe some other team would complete it.

if there will be a new foreign server ever it HAS TO HAVE IP BINDED TO ACC's like on fish like the /finger command it shows all the id's on 1 ip ONLY good comes from this players think twice before they flame just obvious stop the stupidass maphacking, abusing smurfing and dodging etc etc
|
Yea but it has to be changed to something different than /finger , i'm not sure all the non korean new comers to BW will understand why everyone is fingering them.
|
so let me get this straight. I f I start playing Brood War people are going to finger me?
|
How would a command to show IP help with any of those problems? Are you going to memorize everyone's IP, then check everyone you play, so you know if they're smurfing? If someone hacks or flames, what does showing their IP do? And are you going to shame them out of dodging by telling them their IP?

It helps the admins to add sanctions to all accounts instead of one single after heavy bm, maphack or otherwise. On ICCup for instance you can hardly reverse search via IP, but to have to look for suspicious smurfs. A public finger option however would be a no go for me to register or sign up at any platforms. Call me paranoid, but I really don't like the idea shady figures like Game or halfwits like casey can get this kind of information in an instant, half censored or no.

As someone who is seriously considering returning to BW after ten years, I suppose I'd be the kind of 'new player' that you'd want to keep around.
The impression I get just from reading this thread is that Fish is too alien an environment for a non-Korean, ICCup isn't/can't be maintained to resolve certain issues and the proposed new server may not get off the ground/may not get the mass foreign migration that it would need to be worthwhile.
Obviously all these points interest me, especially as I'd be a woeful player and would kind of need/want to talk and practice with other players.

Iccup is the best designed server out there, and if you're new it's a great place to go. Its problems are somewhat exaggerated by the tendency of some individuals to feud with the admins.
Fish is where you go to play against better players. It's not a phenomenal server but it's the same game, so you just learn to deal with it.

Iccup is a great server for new players.

I don't think you need a website, the community isn't big enough to keep it lively. Why not releasing the ladder with the antihack and the new point system, from there just make update.

If you can make it so that anyone can host without having to port forward etc., then the server can really shine. matchmaking isn't that important. matchmaking is important when u have a big player base. but to have a big player base in the first place, you need a server that makes it so that any bastard can host a game. that is the key. im sure you guys know this though.
edit: just tried mca and fish at my new location...can't host =( gotta talk to my landlord lol

Router configuration can be hard for people who only play games on computer. Games of today doesn't need any router configs at all.
