He can take however long he wants as long as he delivers, but you can't just keep hyping something up without having something to actually show for it. Don't get me wrong this is an amazing intiative, but developing something for 5 months and not being able to produce a single picture/video is kind of a disappointment.

What do you expect pictures of? It's a Bnet server, not a graphics overhaul.

post a video or dump the source code on git or something, it's not hard

A video of what though? Going to the same old Bnet menu and making a game just to prove the server exists?

Iccup was a big part of my life, so if I were to ever play bw again it would be iccup

By the looks of things this project won't make it. I mean come on the devs should communicate with us and tell what's going on because otherwise it's safe to assume that they're dead. It was a stupid decision to announce the server 3 years prior having a big hype train then completely abandoning everything.

Dude calm down I have faith in Birdie...he asked for opinions merely half a year prior not three years wtf... It's not like we have invested anything we haven't donated money or time he's doing this because he loves brood war...unless I'm mistaken he didn't super hype it up to build expectations he was just like sup yalls imma start working on a new server if you wanna help lemme know...I really don't get why people are getting so antsy it hasn't cost us anything and I imagine birdie is working on it in his spare time....

I have exams right now, once they're done I'll stream development of the server, just as an expression of good will to the community and to show that it is in fact being worked on.
And it's definitely not going to be three years

It appears I'm a bit behind the times... voted yes btw Wanted to know if it is possible to publish the specification document you will be developing the server from? Perhaps something that will answer questions like "How are we going to accomplish feature X?" Thanks and looking forward to playing on this server.

how are they hyping it up? lol they have been very cautious and very down low, not releasing anything yet or teasing us. they have been direct and straightforward with us saying that this will take time and they wont release until perfection. if they were putting 100% of their time into this and getting paid, id say yeah show me something. but these guys are doing this for free and on their own time. its a labor of love, we gotta wait.

I'll be streaming some development of the website today for a few hours, and probably will continue to do so for the next few weeks. It'll be pretty boring for most non-programmers, and I'm not that good at programming yet so most programmers won't find it that interesting either. But I think it's good to show that development is still happening
Going live now! http://www.twitch.tv/BirdieTelevision

Perfectly right on my programming spectrum.

And that's enough for tonight, I will hopefully stream again tomorrow after I've got some more energy from sleep and dinner and so forth.

Going live again!
EDIT And done for today, I should stream again tomorrow though.

Definitely looking forward to this server thanks for all your hard work thus far! Saw your stream earlier of sospa quite an entertaining cast as well.

Birdie, you did not respond to my previous post, so I doubt you'll respond to this one. I watched a bit of your stream VODs and it looks like you working on the website. In my opinion the community doesn't need another ICCUP. If I were you guys, I would START with successfully implementing:
1. Auto-matchmaking 2. Everyone can play, not most people can host
Failure to do these two, I would abandon the project. Forget about nice charts, cool match lists... get people to play ASAP. If you drastically improve the playing experience, you will definitely attract more players.
Just my 2cents.

Just my 2cents. Sorry for not replying earlier, I'm a busy guy and sometimes forget to reply to people I'm not sure what you're trying to say here, as we're working on that simultaneously with the website. My current task, along with one of the other devs, is to get the website done. We have another couple working on the auto matchmaking, and I did some small work on that previously. Everyone should be able to play if it works out the way we hope it will. We will have working antihack, auto-matchmaking, good website to server/game integration, and a bunch of other cool features. And we won't release till they're all at a good enough level to release.

Had I known earlier about the project, perhaps I could have helped. I've been developing software for more than a decade, and contrary to popular belief, you don't have to "go away" 6-12 months before users see anything. You should work around the concept of MVP - Minimal Viable Product. It's a well established fact in the sales industry that, getting your product into the customer's hands greatly increases your chance of closing the deal :D. So to use that for the StarServer, focus on the auto-matchmaking and "all can play" features for the server, release it closed beta if you will and get people playing man. That's what will make the project succeed... a BW server that has a current feature set players expect or are accustomed to... AND SUM MORE!!! :D. You and the other volunteers don't need to waste their time waiting for when everything comes together only to find out it's not working too well. You can, with careful planning, see whether something will work or not. And those two features are showstoppers or barriers to entry for the new server... not your cool website. So I would pool all resources available NOW to work on the server first and get people playing on it ASAP :D.
Anyway, thanks to all the volunteers for their efforts thus far and I do hope you guys achieve the goals you set out.

yeah, removing all barriers (being able to host freely) so that people can make games and play is truly the #1 thing. Tired of seeing only 5 or so open games in the "Join" list. If everyone could HOST without any trouble, I am sure we will see many more BW games online. I can't host right now because I live on campus. Sucks hard, even UPNP forwarder does not work. Will StarServer introduce a better way?
