I'm not exactly sure if it's taboo to talk about using Chaos Launcher (not sure why or why not), but first I'd like to send my props to all of those who crafted it: without it I never would have been able to play the legendary game. Now, I do have a problem with Chaos Launcher completely freezing my computer after about an hour or so of play. Not that I'm worried about getting away from the game at the end of every hour, I do worry that I'll be playing a long online game when the freeze occurs. Can anyone help on this situation? One reason why I think this is so is because my computer (laptop) cannot support a 640x480 resolution and in general has performance issues with older games. Note, I have no graphics issues and everything looks/sounds perfect or as it should. I don't want to straight-up post my computer's specs because I'm afraid that will avert attention from any real problems. I hope I'm making sense here and I'd appreciate any help!
Ways to prevent Chaos Launcher from crashing?

go to this link and download w7ddpatcher. http://vogons.zetafleet.com/download.php?id=8033&sid=c99d22b7e4d2aa929abba65b4fbc356e the instructions are here: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=25534 so basically u run it, load broodwar (not chaoslauncher, starcraft.exe where u installed it ) into it, click on patch It will take a few times for it to patch, and it will say that it has patched when it has been patched. After that u can just run chaoslauncher and load it. Then it should work fine

Also, the only workaround that fixes this problem perfectly is Window Mode plugin in Chaoslauncher though it will take some getting used to playing in it. If the SC window is too small, try pressing Alt + F9 to make it double its size, although then it could be too big on some resolutions. You could also use the default size in Window Mode (which is a 640x480 window), but lower your desktop resolution to 800x600 manually which will in turn make the SC window seem bigger. And if you know your way around computers, you can try my suggestion from this thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=93382¤tpage=24#461 which enables you to play BW in fullscreen with some minor annoyances.

This is the most common problem of Brood War (Chaoslancher doesn't have anything to do with it) with Windows 7, due to Windows 7 not working properly with DirectDraw applications. Things that can help you avoid these random crashes is to open as few programs as possible when playing (the biggest culprit are the programs like Skype that shows an overlay over Starcraft when someone from your contact list joins/leaves Skype). I currently play Chaos Launcher in windowed mode and frankly I love it. As I said, my laptop does not support a 640x480 at all, so I had the idea that running the game in a windowed mode would yield great results. That's when I found Chaos Launcher. I do believe you're absolutely right about the DirectDraw incompatibilities and I think I'll definitely try running an app like Skype in the background. I'll let you know the results! Thanks for the responses!

Then you've got your windowed, but it has no borders and is at the same resolution as your screen, just like most games have it nowadays. Alot better for alt-tabbing (it won't lag) and would fix the crashing. Too bad my programming skills aren't good enough for that;/

But I think he's pretty busy in real life and thinks that people don't even play BW anymore so he still hasn't finished it yet. It's pretty hard to get in contact with him, but it would be awesome if we could let him know that a lot of people would love the new w-mode so hopefully he finishes it.

Ohhh...if that's the case then I'm still in the dark. I don't run Skype, Xfire, nor Steam in the background while playing. The only applications are default ones that I cannot turn off, like my antivirus and audio systems. Could something in my GPU or BIOS be a result?

Anyways, if you're used to playing in Window Mode then there's nothing to worry about ![]() I don't think you quite understand. I'm already in Windowed Mode and it all freezes anyways. Maybe it's just my computer, but it happens in Windowed Mode regardless of what's running in the background, but I'm positive you are absolutely right that the less you have running in the background equates to longer playing time. Still, I appreciate the persistent and reassuring responses (and that one guy also resolving his issues as well)!

What kind of freeze does exactly happen? Does only your Starcraft freezes or the whole system? Can you open task manager or get any response at all? Does the freeze happen only during Starcraft?

Inside a Starcraft game (just make a game vs AI): - Go to Options -> Video - Uncheck "Enable Color Cycling" (this is entirely related to DirectDraw) This will make water look weird, but I've heard from some people that it fixes freezes Also, there are some other options I set just in case: - Options -> Video -> Disable Unit Portraits - Options -> Speed -> Enable CPU Throttling
