The Korean E-Sport Organization (President: Kim Joon Ho, www.e-sports.or.kr) has announced that SK Planet (President Seo Jing Woo, www.skplanet.co.kr) will be main sponsoring the Starcraft Proleague in Korea.
The Korean E-sport Organization will be naming the ProLeague Title “The SK Planet Starcraft ProLeague Season 1.” The duration of each season will be half a year and SK Planet will be sponsoring both Season 1 and Season 2. Therefore the new title “The SK Planet Starcraft ProLeague” has been established for the first season that will be lasting until April 7th of next year.
SK Planet, part of the SK Telecom Platform, has been showing great interest toward the e-sports in order to expand their horizon.
The E-sport organization and SK Planet are expected to both benefit and have a win-win scenario as they globalize their platform and be better known worldwide.
SK Planet, Lee Jin Woo has stated that “SK Planet hopes to continue to work hard with the e-sports and hopes to glorify e-sports and satisfy the fans as a main sponsor of e-sports.”
On another note, the opening day will be the 26th (Saturday) and “SK Planet Starcraft Proleague Season 1” is planning to do the opening at YongSan I’Park Mall E-sport Sasul Stadium at 11am. At the opening, there will be 8 pro teams along with the sponsor SK Planet.

This is very good news indeed. Hope we will have two enjoyable seasons and by the end hopefully find out what exactly SK planet sells.
On a side note: Can anyone provide any info as to why Shinhan Bank decided not to sponsor proleague again this year? Wasn't the association profitable for them?
|
good to see sk planet still supporting BW ^_^
|
so the titles will have [SKPSPLS1] in it now? or do we keep [SPL] *whistles*
well, the more SK the merrier, show some thankfulness other teams and lose, we pay for your lifes!
(so which thread of the two do we post in now?)
|
Globalization of BW? Is there hope?
|
Well, it looks like SKTelecom is the true hero of e-sports.

Pretty sure it will just be SPL for the sake of simplicity. Its awesome to see corporations willing to stay involved in Esports.

Seems like noone really talked about translating TIG articles...
EDIT: What up with reposting 3 same news across 3 separate threads?

It was SPL because Shinhan Pro League So it can be SPL for SK Planet Pro League =D Great news

So much for evil empire. even somebody like me gives you skt1 fans a *little* more respect :p

The guy was head of KeSPA before. I think various SK people chair kespa. Which probably means... they couldn't get a real sponsor.

would give much respect for SK for all they've done for the esports scene

Yeah that seems somewhat worrisome. SKT (as much as i love them) can't be a one man sponsor for the whole of BW.
|
SKT Proleague , nice name lol ! Good news indeed.
|
Well, the money invested in the champion's prize will return as an investment on SKT1. Sounds like a win-win for SK :p

Sponsorship is a good thing.

SPL 4 lyfe. But good to hear that it's coming back

From http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/special/2011/10/182_96442.html - SK Planet unveils global ambitions
The CEO went on to say that SK Planet is aiming at becoming the top platform company in Asia in five years. T Store is currently the top local app store, with 9.6 million users nationwide and 190,000 registered items. It has 45 million downloads a month on average, and 8.6 billion won in monthly transactions.
The CEO is looking to the worldwide market: “We succeeded in the Korean market, but it was in a walled garden. SK Planet is the new challenge toward the global market.” T Store is scheduled to move into the Japanese market this year, following a partnership with China Mobile, Lenovo and Gree of Japan.
Please bring PL back to China. No more typhoons I promise.
|
People need to give SKT more respect, guys we're keeping BW alive for you guys
|
|
More SK Telecom? Whatever it takes to have more proleague yo.
|
While it's a good thing that PL is continuing, overall it shouldn't be considered good news, since the diversity of sponsors has been reduced (on top of the loss of team sponsors).
Just like nate (also part of SK group!) sponsoring MSL at the last minute, SK Planet sponsoring PL (at the last minute again) might be evidence that SK group had to step in at the last moment because nobody else was willing to fund things.
I do hope Kespa tries to expand to China again. Actually, I'm now actually nervous about the possibility that Team 8 won't actually get sponsored (when I wasn't worried before the PL sponsor was announced)...despite the fact that it's probably THE top-tier team right now.
|
SKT fighting! Let me know next time KT pays for a league.
|
Bad news at least for me,since if sponsors are coming out from kespa themselves that would mean that there are less and less people who want to sponsor BW related events and teams... especially if a long standing sponsor such as shinhan bank decides to pull out of sponsoring proleague now.
Oh well, at least we still get to see proleague after all... I really hope the economical situation for BW starts to look up
|
|
KTPL I can see it happening next round :D
|
SK doing a lot for the BW scene. First a team and now sponsoring the entire PL? Korean Air and Shinham Bank would benefit from having a team of their own
|
ahh good news finally some PL . Ive been dying to see some BW for weeks.
Hmm about the sponsor I dont know what to think about the situation since Kespa wont tell anybody the truth anyways. They said there are some sponsors for the teamless players iirc (Team 8) but its still Kespa sponsored.. and there are so many teams gone now and MBC shut down their E-Sport section
Oh well I know that I well travel with Korean Air if I should ever go to Korea .. :D Effort fuck yeah

The legacy lives! I'm so happy. The lack of BroodWar in my life turned my heart black. Maybe now it can heal a little.

Wait it didn't say, is this broodwar ? Is this a wonderful news ? :D

not 'wonderful' but WONDERFUL!

Great news :D looking forward to it!! ^^

cool stuff. gonna be a great season
|
Finally, more BW ...
I mean, apart from the wonderful news, I just can't wait to see more BW. Woongjin & Team8 fighting! (I really hope Team8 do well!)
|
This isn't going to work, given that most BW pros are already practicing SC2, and the international scene isn't going to play BW when there's such a big scene assosiated with SC2

SKT was that much upset about 2nd place, they decided to sponsor next season .
Well, it would be fair for SKTT1 to win whole thing.

So this basically means there'll definitely be more than one season? Nice!

Great news! Thank you SK Planet <3 just 2 more days!! 2MORE DAYSSS

So... how hard was it to refrain from putting Bisu as team captain after last season??? :D
|
Bisu is so good SKT bought him his own league to play in :D

Loads of respect for SKT, a solid sponsor for BW. Hopefully this encourages and leads to a super kickass sponsor for Kespa Dreamteam! : )
|
Yeah... not being able to find a third party sponsor is slightly troublesome... I know that the Kespa corporations are big deals but it sucks that they can't grow sponsors.
|
Nice to hear that they have at least two more seasons secured.
|
Actually talking about Team8, is there a chance ShinHan takes them, like they scale back their sponsoring instead of backing out completely. Straws, i guess grasping for straws, but it's possible right? right?!
(ohh that's what MelOn is from, i instinctively like SKT businesses a lot it would seem)
|
|
Evil empire indeed, trying to take over more of BW.
|
YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
|
Huge thanks to SK for keeping BW alive. But do wish we see more diversity in sponsorship to keep things going. That said, no change of opinion on SKT1.

I wonder who is going to win it

Awesome to see SK sponsoring this proleague. I actually thought we weren't going to get a sponsor for another couple weeks to be honest.
|
SKT PROLEAGUE? SKT CHAMPIONS!! T1 FIGHTING! GO BISU <3
|
The only downside to this is that if there is some polemic around stuff like "pp" instead of "ppp", or pausing because of headphone problems or pixelating screen problems that involves T1 and its ruled in their favor, there is going to be gossip overwhelming.
But it would be awesome for CJ to win T1's parent company's league.

And don't forget that there is an entire tournament sponsored by STX. Poor Team 8, no sponsors and surrounded by evil corporations.

Bisu will make sure that it indeed is SKPL this time.

I hope this encourages other big names to start investing in Broodwar again.

Lol maybe this influenced the new proleague format? SK wants to win so much they buy the entire SPL and gets rid of ace matches. HAHA

It's pretty great. How about OSL n MSL

Looking at team 8 current condition the only decent place they have is the practice room , other than that the bedrooms is really not that optimal for sleeping only having few mat's and a wooden floor ,compared to a sponsored team their room is much lesser in many ways , besides that it looks like baby is no longer baby as he has grown pimples :D .
I believe team 8 really looks like how the pro gamer house actually looks like during the boxer era for example similarity that comes up to my mind is messy kitchens and such and really closed knitted practice room .Honestly speaking team 8 has a lot to proof and them not having a sponsor currently the atmosphere is not as good as a sponsored team.

Supposedly (not official), Shinhan Bank's contract with KeSPA expired after last season and the bank chose not to renew it. The typhoon Muifa debacle probably hurt any chance of renewal.

Still sucks massively that the final was never held in china.

Ok so this season I want to follow Proleague. I've never done it before but I believe that the time may finally be right. Will these VODs be posted on TL like the BW VODs usually are?

So we have a full year of Proleague ahead of us? AWESOME

Many teams where the people who are just practice partners are hardly recognized (as Hiya put it) may be alienating. I think you should factor in the positives of being on a team with very skilled players and very few people who you know as being a positive. Everyone in the house knows one another it must feel more like a family, and make practice more engaging and fun. I don't deny their material amenities are lower than before, but I do think there are many good things about Team Eight from a teamwork perspective. It's not like they are sleeping in those conditions with people they don't like. They're sleeping in those conditions with people who are now their closest allies.
I am very excited to see how it plays out this season.
