I got into professional Starcraft through Starcraft 2, and although I played Brood War as a kid, I never retained my interest in the game at the time, and moved on to more games. Things eventually came full circle and I'm more into Starcraft now than I ever was. I float around TeamLiquid on a daily basis, and as such, can't help but see all of the passion from Brood War, and all of the hype for the upcoming ProLeague season. I've slowly started learning a little bit about Brood War, from watching the OSL finals recently to witnessing BoxeR play Brood War in person at IPL 3
With all the hype, and all the news of the upcoming ProLeague season, I can't help but want to follow it, and feel at least a fraction of the emotions Brood War fans are feeling. So please, help me, a clueless Starcraft 2 forum-goer, begin to appreciate the masterpiece that is Starcraft: Brood War, and the upcoming ProLeague!
People will stream proleague matches on the right-hand-side bar. You can also watch past PL matches in the small vod section or nevake's channel on youtube. Look out for moments like these: + Show Spoiler +
Proleague will supposedly start on November 26th. Just look at the top right box of TL under the calendar where the streams are listed and you will probably either see boesthius or nanashin streaming. If you don't have time to watch them live you can watch the VODs on the youtube channel 'nevake'. If you want english commentary search for nukethestars or dejavu119. They will probably only commentate the OSL and maybe proleague matches between the BW elites.
Interviews of matches should be available fairly fast after each match, so check the BW General section for those. They are translated by the lovely people in this community.
As in Starcraft II, there is of course live-threads for the matches under the BW Tourneys section.
From the perspective of someone who lurks far more than they post in brood war forums: Read through a LR thread a bit before posting and realize how civil and mannered 98% of people are. That's how it should be
yeah, summary: pretty much all pl will be streamed by someone in "on air" section (nanashin, gtr, eton, etc). pretty much all vods get uploaded to youtube account nevake (usually by mokitra). They can be found in "small vod thread" most matches posted in torrent thread as well. all games will have live report threads
I walked away to grab a sandwich and I came back to all of this information! Thanks for all the quick replies! I've certainly got a lot of reading (and watching) to do between now and the first match!
@rotinegg: Why include that firebathero ceremony and not the swimsuit one?
This is exactly the situation I was in about a year ago. I started to slowly follow the stuff whenever I can, and it's much fun. Don't miss on Power Rank too, they are mad fun to read.
Did you catch this spotlighted thread? http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=285270 It's a pretty nice summary of the main characters of Proleague. Basically, when the game starts we all hop on the stream and watch giddily and then spam LR threads during commercial breaks.

Yeah, I thought the BW LR threads were bad until I saw the SC2 ones...
I started following the bw scene 3 years ago and man what a ride it has been. I promise you VirgilSC2 there is so much emotion tied up to BW's history. Its a story about a RTS game that became a national sport drawing crowds up in the hundreds of thousands. Its the only pc-game in the world that has professional players with annual payments. Its a story of what should be impossible, and still seem so in the rest of the world for the time being, that PC-gamers become idols and sporting heroes swooned by boys and girls alike.
I would recommend reading the Final Edits in the feature section her on TL to get a better grasp of the strategical evolution of the game and of the individual players.
The best thing about Proleague is finding a team you like and following its performance, hopefully all the way to the finals.
Then whenever a player of your team wins a game, go in LR and spam show your support by typing something along the lines of BEEEEEEEEEEEEESUIT!1!1!1!, which you will find plenty of fans of that team already doing!

I think I'm going to stick 8 pieces of paper with team names on it to a dartboard, close my eyes, and then just pick whichever one I land on for this season.

dont get stx or you're fucked.
oh: just a warning. dont pick out of the ones on your profile- oz, mbc, and fox have disbanded - instead their top players are going to Team 8, a new team.
Thanks for the warning, that's why I said 8, not 10 :D
Just root for a specific player and like all other games, when the player you are rooting gets defeated or wins, you will eventually what others would feel.

just bisu.
anyway, one thing that totally upped my enjoyment was watching it on stream with stream chat open. it beats korean commentary that i don't understand. also you learn a lot about the game. i don't even talk in the chat, i just like reading.

No no no no no! Just choose CJ ENTUS!!! We're going to win PL this season, the team has an awesome and talented roster with the likes of EffOrt and Hydra as our top Zergs, Movie, Horang2 and Snow as top Protoss and Leta as a top terran. So many top and awesome players, how can you pick any other team?
Just make the right decision, get a CJ icon next to your sig and join our ranks as an entusman!

This is a very accurate account of how I got into BW two years ago, except I started with Flash/KT. Seriously once you have a favourite team/player it makes following BW much more enjoyable. I hope theres a Fantasy PL this season as well since that gives an extra reason to follow your team.
As someone else that started watching BW after SC2, my advice is to watch the matches while reading the live report threads! The biggest obstacle to watching BW at first is the lack of English commentary so be sure to read the "intra-community" commentary that a live report provides. People are generally very friendly and will answer any kinds of questions (from strategy to player info) if you just ask!
Also check out liquipedia and get a feel for what part the units play in the various matchups. Not all the strategies are up to date on liquipedia, but at least you'll get an idea of why certain units are used (ex. mutas and lings in ZvZ, medic marine in TvZ, mech play in TvP, etc.) Try playing some BW as well, even if it's just to get an understanding of how things control. Over time you'll get used to the strategy and trends and you won't even feel the need for English commentary.
I highly recommend you check out Final Edits as well as players pages on liquipedia.BisuStorkJaedongFlash. All sorts of cool stuff, trivia, play style, rivalries... I remember when i first started reading tlpd i just kept on opening tab after tab after tab =P.
don't pick randomly, don't pick because somebody tells you to. watch for 2 weeks without any preconceived notions going in, and you'll find yourself drawn to a team.

Haha, yeah. I started out as a Bisu fan, not a BW fan. Started attending SKT's matches just to see him, but eventually fell for the game itself too :D
Something you might need to know, or notice, is that sometimes at the beginning of the game, they show the crowd, and half of them are playing on their cell phones for the first few minutes.
don't loose patience if nothing happens in the first few minutes. Most bw games are macro games.

korean crowds are also cute as hell. you will giggle..!
I was drawn to SKT(Fantasy) until I saw the light(Jaedong), take some time before you pick a team to support.
Which team you pick will not only affect your spectator experience but also your posting on the BW forums, cause we all know the evil empire(s) need to be brought down.
the OGN commentators are the best in the business, a lot of the amazing clips are well complimented by their energy (and the fans'!), they're hella funny which appeals to the korean viewers while their sheer energy appeals to people regardless of race and language
i agree on the power rank being great, they let you get a feel for the ups and downs of each individual player and the history of the dominance behind some of the current and past greats (if you see the streaks that jaedong was on, you might wonder how people don't consider him above flash at least historically until you see how much emphasis people put on the sheer amount of DOMINANCE flash had during his peak, this coming from a JD fan) and lets you learn some of the bigger names in BW relatively quickly. The games that are linked in power ranks are also of good quality at least relevant to the players that they are linked to.
play some bw before stream starts and feel how hard the game is then watch the games and become amazed by how perfect every single one of the progamers are. then see bisu jaedong flash stork come out and rape everyone else under them. oh and fantasy gg timing
FPVods are also really exciting to watch. They definitely give you a headache to start off with, but it helps you know how insanely skilled these players are and appreciate the games more. Although sometimes OGN will show brief first-person shots of the players playing during the games.
You might want to listen to how Tastosis were back in the day.

I only started following mid 2010, but I found that the viewing experience was greatly enhanced by having storylines to follow. Each of the teams has a rich history, which a new viewer can glean from articles such as [CJ] Face the Future or Masters of the Universe. I think the best place to find this stuff is in the Final Edits section, or reading all the "Why team X will win Proleague".
Obviously I'm quite a new viewer, but these are the storylines that I attach to each team (Please excuse the inevitable factual errors):
ACE is the perpetual underdog team, composed of "washed up" players who started their military service. The most famous of these is of course BoxeR himself, and nowadays Iris and firebathero. An extra bonus is that that some ACE players undergo a rebirth and they perform well above expectation, or even better than they used to. ggaemo is a great example of this. Anyway, who doesn't like rooting for the underdog. ACE players are never the favourite when they plays (unless you're incredibly biased), but when all the odds are stacked against you, truly epic games can occur.
CJ Entus is an incredibly deep team, with generations of top players and a zerg line. It's got some of the most entertaining players (Leta, Horang2) and some of the best players (Hydra, EffOrt). Almost all of their talent is homegrown, and the story of their early days is quite awesome ([CJ] Face the Future). It's also fun to see each successive generation strive to do better.
KT is of course the current champion, and has the greatest player of all time, R̶e̶a̶c̶h̶ Flash. You can watch them just to see the best player show off his skills. The mortal KT players can also be quite interesting, as they are all inconsistent with flashes of brilliance. IMO KT has an interesting "redemptive" storyline. Along with SKT, they have the most money to throw around, which gives them the"evil corporate empire" image. However, for all their money and purchases, it's their homegrown players that have proven the most clutch. Also, they've got Reach. and Flashcot, ruler of all.
If you like Protoss (the race in general, not Bisu), you should probably follow KHAN, They've got an incredible Protoss lineup, with both Stork and JangBi. They've also got a coach who makes very interesting decisions, which can be fun to watch too.
The Emperor's Empire, SKT is a powerhouse. They are the most accomplished and popular team, and are the favourites everytime they play. They've also got Bisu. If you thought Artosis' hype of NesTea was bad, you should see what some people think of Bisu. SKT vs KT live reports can be very interesting reads. They've also got a cool mascot and the cutest fangirl
Not much to say, unfortunately. STX SouL has fallen on tough times recently. Watch to see if some of the most inventive players can pull through and make this team good.
Woongjin zergs are awesome to watch. ZerO made the Queen viable, and the team is probably the most practised in ZvZ hive play. Their team also has this ridiculous bromance, which makes reading their interviews very entertaining. They're also pretty good at BM.
Team 8 is a dream team, make no mistake about it. They have the aces of 3 teams, including the greatest zerg ever, Jaedong and proleague bonjwa Sea Just reading the articles about the team can cause nerd chills.

Wow you wrote that down really well! Much better than a lot of more experienced fans would have written/known.
That said in terms of proleague I feel that SKT has the beefiest protoss line-up. Bisu PvZ god (although his PvT was 100% winrate last winners league iirc) and proleague powerhouse, Best PvT sniper, By.Sun promising rookie Protoss player. Having both Bisu and Best means SKT can reliably pick one of these guys to win them any matchup. Jangbi and Stork are both really good PvT, but their PvP and PvZ are a bit shaky at times.
I definitely follow Khan for the rookies though. TurN and Reality are both really fun to watch. TurN with the BoxeR style aggression and strategic risky openers, Reality with crisp strategies overall. If these two guys combined, you would have Neo BoxeR.
SKT is a little more than just bisu. SKT has the largest variety of play in the league. Everything from multitask bisu, to maco best, to sun who splits the difference, to paralyze who doesn't get to play enough because we have too many good players, but has some entertaining games of his own. soo has a defensive style, s2 has an offensive style, hyuk has a WTF style, and ssak always has some crazy build every time he is sent. And fantasy probably has the widest variety of play of any player, certainly of players of such a high caliber.
The people who are SKT fans above bisu fans may be the minority, but SKT would still be a dynamic team without him.
Oh, and the flashcot is definitely NOT a reason to support KT. That thing is scary, and causes small children to cry.

Aww, but Flashcot is so cute.
omfg its so creepy :f
i dont see why would you pick a team right now virgil, for me it took some time to actually feel something toward players/team
there are doom sayers, saying it will be last season or whatnot (who knows it may be, but nothing really says it will have to), take a time and choose with heart
for example for me the tipping point was Jangbi play, and i also liked stork for his position hes in, and his chaotic gameplan (sometimes), as you could see a slight sparks of brilliance in his "chaos", and Jangbi was the player i familiarized with during his run for OSL

I have an undying loathe for KT that has been harbored for a long time now...
Reach !!!!!!!! Watching the man dragon, man lots, mantoss is the first step to get into the bw scene . I get chills and my face expression turn exactly into ggaemo face like the game where his hydralisk run into sneaky mine .
When I saw Reach high templars decimate flash 140 mech army and that gosu statsis taking out two vessels and two siege tanks and marine , Now that I think of it , KT field in freaking reach man , he's the freaking man toss why can't you field him in !!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and if you are wondering which game is it , where ggaemo turn into that shocking expression , it's ggaemo v upmagic
That spider mine did some really terrible damage and destroyed 1 group control of hydra easily .
Just though I'd update with my Fantasy Pro-League Choices, hopefully I don't place too badly XD

JaedongCaptain He's Team 8's "ace" player, and even without ace matches I suspect we'll see him every match since Team 8 didn't sign OzSucksBallsWithoutMe, or PirateZerg. Plus, his name has "dong" in it, so he's going to be a Team League monster. n.Die_soO As a newcomer to Brood War, I was very surprised to see a player like this that I heard so much about valued at only 4 points. sKyHigh I had him next to wooki so tabbing back and forth I made an error of thinking he was on KT, he's actually on CJ, so I think the only reason I chose this guy is I heard he was good and I like his name. Playing Terran on these maps is also a plus. firebathero Between knowing that he's one of the best players on ACE, and having seen his ceremonies, I want him to do well, so for 4 points he's on my team. He should see a lot of playing time. wooki So I heard Flash hyped this guy for the upcoming Proleague, so I think he'll at least see some playing time, on that alone. For 3 points, not a terrible gamble. BByong When it came down to picking a 1-point player, I picked the one I had heard about, that being Bbyong. He's a total blind pick for me, but hopefully it'll pay off. Team: Team 8 I drew a team out of a bucket, and my choice landed me with The Ocho, so this was an easy pick, even if they're 5 points.
Anti-Team Kal From what I've read, Kal was slumping and went to ACE, so hopefully he won't see an absurd amount of playing time/success Snow I chose Snow because he's Protoss, he's a high value player that likely won't see as much play as some of the similar value players, and while he's on CJ, he's a safer anti-choice compared to the rest of the 6 point players. hyvaa I chose hyvaa because frankly, I have no idea who he is, and he's on STX. Those two factors should mean he's fairly safe on my anti-team to start with.
This is my first time playing FPL, so I don't think I'm going to trade much, unless I made a huge blunder somewhere. I'll be proudly cheering for The Ocho and my players!

Don't undervalue Protoss players, they have a slight edge in teamleagues. And best thing for your Anti-Team is just to fill it up with KT Zergs. (see last Proleague Finals)
Edit: And yes, there are better 3 pointes than skyhigh, like Shine or Grape.
Haha, you should have gotten yourself Minidong as well then. You can never have too much Dong in a team ^^
I don't know if we're going to be seeing much of skyhigh, considering how many superior players CJ has and how poorly he did last season. You're better off with another 3-pointer imo.
And it's a good thing you're not a Bisu fan. If you were, you'd never forget hyvaa. His mere existence would be like a knife in your soul, the same way Shine's is T__T

Hopefully he proves himself in-house, at the very least recover his TvT, then he would be sent out to snipe. Another weapon for the CJ coaches. Also hes #2 terran after Leta, so he might get some games, but BByong might take his place.
Well, this morning at work I decided to select which team out of the following 8 I would cheer for: So, naturally, I crumpled them all up into balls, put them into a container and shook them around. After much deliberation, I reached in and pulled out: + Show Spoiler [The One Team TO RULE THEM ALL] +
I would say Team 8 was a good pick. They are a new team, and as a new fan you can watch them from their start.

Considering what Kal used to be in his prime, I'd imagine he's going to get a LOT of playing time on ACE, as going on raw statistics, he's their best player right now. That's the only choice I disagree with.

To be honest as a new viewer that's probably the best choice. You won't feel left behind on the history of an already established team, and you can follow them right with their fresh start.
.. plus they have the most awesome players anyway.
