This is horrible news. I'm a sc2 player but I've always looked up to BW scene since they achieved what any other game could not. That is going mainstream, with corporate sponsors and celeb-status players. Can anyone in Korea give us maybe some background behind this decision? Is BW no longer a common past-time? Have online MMO's taken over?

i am really sad for bw...always liked OZ mostly for JD thou but man this is sad, for all teams, hope kespa finds some sponsors but i dont think its possible to find em in such a short time for 3 teams

I hope that they will manage to find a sponsor and maybe merge these 2 teams together, it wouldn't be that bad actually.

This sucks donkey balls. Sponsorship wasn't a problem in the past, I mean Hanbit->Woongjin wasn't much of a problem, but 3 teams at the same and MSL is huge...........Fuck man.

I guess JD is probably going to retire and pursue his studies. He will never play sc2 and all of this drama will probably make him retire. Really sad.

With JD's dedication and work ethics, I'm sure he'll succeed anywhere he goes including his studies. He is maybe a bit behind with his studies, but he got a kick-start on his life with the incredible amount of money he made the past few years.
But hopefully, a sponsor can be found for Oz

Why is this happening?

Is Broodwar TV viewership ratings getting too low to support the professional scene? Are fans not showing up to events? Or are costs of operating a team just getting too high?

Viewership is lower than before, and ogn is in a deficit right now, but it's mostly because the whole economy itself is in a bad state, so sponsors are financially tight. This leads to them making cuts and pulling out of sponsorship.

Judging from the high viewership at the SPL finals, I would assume that viewership is decent enough. If I had to take a guess, it would probably be that the global economy is going into the toilet, and its starting to affect every company. As a result, many companies want to trim the fat in such harsh times, and BW teams seem to be a part of that fat (which doesn't account for MBC Game's decision to switch to a music channel). I don't really have an extensive knowledge base regarding the economic situation of modern BW, but seeing how American and European companies are falling apart, I can't help but think that its happening in South Korea too.
