Pretty insane article I just came across on pcgamer's website, found here

More information about it can be found at the following: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/01/skynet-meets-the-swarm-how-the-berkeley-overmind-won-the-2010-starcraft-ai-competition.ars/

Note: The ARS link directly above was actually written by the participants of the Berkeley AI Team.

So what do you guys think? AI becoming self-aware?

Edit:

More ridiculousness as the Bot evolves found here: http://eis-blog.ucsc.edu/2010/10/starcraft-ai-competition-results

No surprise here. A computer does not suffer from strains of the fingers and perfect microing is no problem for it either.

Wasn't there a documentary about this supercomputer and chess that played brilliantly against grandmasters?

Hm I've seen the AI's and they are really susceptible to abuse of all kinds.Still impressive though.

I wonder, who is Oriol Vinyals? Aka?

"If one could perform perfect micro, Zerg would be the strongest race"

Proof to July's words?

I'd like to see it's Muta micro. And how it copes with unusual strategies.

'Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine' was one, though probably not the only one:

What what the the fuck fuck? That blew my mind so much, I doubled every word in the phrase 'What the fuck' to get: 'What what the the fuck fuck my what the the fuck fucking what did the drop dropship medivac where in the what in the hell?' - Day[9]

Yeah he can't possibly have been #1 spanish player at any point in time, that's for sure.

I wouldn't call ''Oriol'' a progamer. But this is pretty cool stuff. ^__^

Yep that's it!

The trailer's a bit... over the top, but the foundation is there!

I came instantly when I saw the simultaneous 20 mutas dance.

Seriously, great reading there ! It could lead to new way of training against a specific strategy. In the IA fields alone it's a great achievement.

I just read the article. Nowhere does it mention that the Berkeley bot was beating progamers. Misleading title or am I missing something?

Edit: Oic Oriol is a person not a bot.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ There are three kinds of people in the world: those who can count and those who can't.

An impressive bot, no doubt, but hugely misleading title. Especially when we're talking about BW and the thresh hold of "pro gamer" is a lot higher.

The arstechnica article is pretty awesome though.

I really doubt it beat anyone notable. Title would be more accurate if it said "computer successfully executes a basic muta rush build order".

Progamer has a specific meaning, the only progamers in the foreign scene were Draco, Ret and Nony briefly and Idra.

But it's not just a muta rush build order. If you read the article it's a lot more sophisticated than that. It adapts itself to early rushes and does not follow a fixed build at all. More importantly, the muta micro is far more advanced than any human player could execute. The whole muta flock either clumps or spreads in response to different threats.

This AI uses a technique that is out of reach of humans. It is interesting to note that the AI that came second also uses a technique that humans would never be able to execute: SCVs are used throughout the battlefield to repair tanks and goliaths.

I could easily see AI one day beating 'real' progamers because they are not constrained by speed.
