I recently found an old CD containing 994 replays from 2001 to 2002 that I had originally created to watch on the flight to the CompUSA MillionMan LAN event. As these are among the earliest possible replays from non-Korean competitive SC events, I figured others might be interested in taking a look at how things were different "back in the day" of a developing international scene. I'll also try to add some backstory and information on the games, but as it has been 8+ years, my memory will likely be foggy at best. :p
The event is currently scheduled to take place at: Monday, Jan 17 8:15pm GMT (GMT+00:00) and will likely last 1-3 hours (depending on how things go).
These games are from various events such as:
* KBK * Recon2000 * Mr.FixItOnline WCG USA qualifier * CompUSA's first $10,000 online tournament * etc.
It includes either myself (average player) or my younger brother (know as Wizard, WCG USA 2002 second place, CompUSA 10K 4th place, etc) against various non-Korean top names such as:
* Rekrul * Elky * Whear * Liquid'Corbalt * Tasteless (probably also Day[9] as I think he was SleepingDrone in CUSA Online?) * Tsunami * {PH}jeSter * Froz * etc
There are a few drawbacks currently however. The first is that I don't have a verified stream anywhere, so I will currently be limited to 50 viewers unless someone wants to lend me theirs. The second is that currently I am unable to change my scroll speed in SC:BW (it gives a memory access exception error) despite everything else working, so it may be a bit jerky if I can't resolve that issue.
As I remember the series of myself vs Liquid'Corbalt (RO64 in CUSA $10k online) the best, I'll likely start with that series. For the rest, I'll likely post polls while the event is going on to determine which player(s) people want to see in their 2001 to 2002 form. I'll also see if I can export a semi-full list of players later so that people can let me know if I missed someone's smurf from that time.
Not sure how interested people will be in this (if any at all), so figured I'd post this in blogs to start. If there is significant interest, mods can feel free to move this to BW General. Thanks.

wow, nice find ^_^
Any chance we could get a huge pack with them? I won't be able to watch live
|
This sounds really cool and interesting. I'l definitely try to check this out!
|
wow, that's invaluable ! I just saw a thread about someone who wants to keep every single BW replay, you should contact him : http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=184123 Could you upload it ? I don't know if I'd like to watch a stream of these replays as I love to move on the minimap by myself. Of course if you can add some background information and context, that will make it definitely worth watching !
|
damn soon bw replays will be treated better than money, with people shelling out fortunes just to get a glimpse of what once was.
|
sounds awesome bluewolf! The Tsunami replays should be cool. He was the first zerg i ever saw that used defilers back then.

Hey man, this is too cool for a non-verified stream. If you cant get it verified, I ll lend you mine, or you could look into using own3d.tv which doesnt need verification (I THINK!).

Aren't old BW replays buggy/unstable? Still, would be nice if you could upload the pack. And what version of BW would this be?

Cast them and toss them on youtube ^^
|
Is there any chance you could upload all of them later on Megaupload or some such? I should be there to watch, unless something comes up. This is really cool, thanks
|
This is like the StarCraft library of Alexandria.
|
I would be interested as well. Though I doubt that you would get a high viewer number with this kind of show...
Anyway, you made sure that these replays are working correctly, right?
|
Yay Tsunami! Upload the replays when you're done your stream please :D I will try to catch your stream if I can, but you've chosen Monday of all days T.T

Just woke up, so I'll try to reply to various things here now:
On January 14 2011 16:06 0mgVitaminE wrote:wow, nice find ^_^ Any chance we could get a huge pack with them? I won't be able to watch live
I'll look into uploading the pack eventually. Currently, it won't be of much use unless I relabel most of the replays (most are titled "me win vs <player><x>.rep" or "me lose vs <player><x>.rep", where X is the number of times we had played before). I know the conditions around the majority of games based on the players nicks involved along with the time period they were played in, but would need to update all the titles or at least organize them by event to be of much use to others. As for not watching it live, I'm sure it will be recorded to watch afterwards.

Also have 1 Private Message so far with an offer to share a stream to look into as well. Could also be possible to do a restream of my base stream as well, and just link to the restream, I would think? Either way, send me a PM if you are serious and we can discuss details.

These replays are 1.09 and 1.10 - a few test ones I've tried have worked so far in those old versions. Not sure how stable this whole experiment may be?

I chose Monday as it is a holiday for most in the US, and because it would not conflict with any other event. I also picked a time I figured would still be useful for most Europeans. :p
|
bluewolf, would you mind jsut releasing the replays even though they are not catogeroized. i am trying to collect old replays to archive and i think these things would be gems to get. wether they are titled correctly or just random letters.
i am currently running Project replay (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=184123) and in doing this, i have yet to auctally find many of you or your brothers replays. auctally many early replays have been lost over time due to links and webistes going dead. you're collection is a gem and i would hate to see it go away after the stream is over. anby replays you're willing to send would be amazing

I sorted players by APM, and thought I'd list out some of the players I don't recognize just in case they were previous AKAs of known players. Here are a few (most are likely players who simply retired):
Likely from KBK: [ReD]KANGNAMGu (Z) - July 21, 2001 game [Ooops]LaVa (Z) - July 23, 2001 game TeStEr..[Final] (T) - Sept 15, 2001 game sin-chang-min (P) - August 11, 2001 game, seems to be the same person from: http://www.urisai.com/starcraft/battle/sf.html
From Mr. FixItOnline WCG USA Ladder qualifier: Justin_Gercken (Z)
From $10k CompUSA online: Blast.Sharp (T) GG12-mockturtle (Z/T) Mr.Turtles (Z/T) - may be the same as above despite a large APM gap between the akas, but whoever he is, was a Z/T race picker with good skill at the time. InTro..[TnC] (Z/T) FearFact (Z) BlowToss (T) AsianDragon (Z)
Unknown event, yet to determine (likely need to research background and think on them): Nazgul (Z) - game on March 2002. Unlikely to be the Nazgul of today, I think, unless he used to play Z?
A few notable additions to the above upon a quick 2nd look of the games as well: Oem)ret (Z) - game on March 2002. Confirmed to be ret by: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=16833¤tpage=8#160 .
Dreame (Z) Sindread (Z) NewbieMcNasty (T) Yosh (T) SuperCondomUser / Dudey(I think) (T) Assem (T) Testie (T) MarshallFaulk (P) Liquid.Crystal (T/P)

I believe FearFact was a high-level WC3 player during early RoC, if that's the same as listed here.

On January 16 2011 20:02 masterbreti wrote: i hope you link us too the stream before it goes live
Will post the link about 15 minutes before the event starts. Doing a test of a verified stream restreaming my stream today, so there should be no limit on the number of viewers if that goes well.
Also - woke up to quite a relevant blog post: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=185004 (Liquid'Corbalt's interview while in CompUSA's $10k tournament, who is the first person I will be streaming to start with).
|
I had no idea that your brother was Wizard. Is that Rush)Wizard? I remember him having some great storm drop harassment back in the day before it was popular.
|
BTW, here is an excerpt from another interview around that time where Cyrax reveals some of the smurfs you listed in the OP:
Loophole: lol. So in the compUSA tourney, have you played any smurfs that were really good? Can you name em?
Oem)Cyrax: oh god. I played every good player in the tourni so far besides 1 I think. Blast sharp (yosh), mr.turtles(pills)...
Loophole: yeah, this is reveal the smurf hour.
Oem)Cyrax: poc-squared (not 100% positive, but i think its wizard[t.d], and his name makes sense. Power of cheese squared really desribes that fool. And we got dreame, can't forget dreame, hes sexy.
Loophole: Do people know your smurf in the tourny?
Oem)Cyrax: ya, after like the 3rd week I just let it go. Wasn't worth wasting my time to cover. tel-aviv (pillars), and TheNotoriousFoo (ME!) Those are the top 10 smurfs ;-)

Yes, Rush)Wizard was one of his akas.

Thanks for the info on the akas. Let me know if you find anymore. It appears I can now add:
Pillars (about 10 replays against Tel-aviv) Oem)Cyrax

hm i dont know if i can watch at that time

Bluewolf. i'm still hoping you release these replays in a pack. this is histoy you have here. why let only a small portion of it get out in a vod. let it all out for the world to see and to love. stuff like this should not be kept from our sights
|
This sounds awesome. Hopefully TL staff can front page this and feature the stream when it goes up?
Finding old CD's that aren't scratched to shit from the early 2000's is always a blast. I remember I found one a couple months ago full of Weird Al tunes. I had scrawled "Als weird Al" on the cd cause uh, my name is Alex. I can't stand weird al now.
Anyway hopefully I won't miss this great show

Thank you so much for this. Love the old history and seeing the MUCH different play style from the early days.

Awesome, just absolutely awesome. Seeing this old reps and you commentating is great! Please do some more!
|
There was about 70 of us watching on the restream, good stuff, loved the classic "high level" games.
|
Catched the last hour, hour and a half. It was great, we saw probably one of the first game of a young Day[9], then, one of his matches six months later, he had improved greatly. Everything was great, and the comment was good.
|
this was great, i was about 12 when these games went down. i played nr20 with my friends on Blue Night in Seoul, and it was good.
but this...is awesome
|
Awesome stuff, enjoyed it - would watch again
I'm really annoyed that I lost all my replays from this era so I hope this kind of thing happens more often.
|
History was never more awesome! Hope you do this again and show us some of your ancient replays. Honestly, I would actually pay/donate for it. That stuff must survive the ages. Thanks
|
Holy shit... these are some ollllld games (and names). Very cool.
|
As someone who missed most of the development of BW into what it is today, I really enjoyed watching this. It brought back some fond memories and gave me a nice opportunity to see some replays I would have never seen otherwise. The commentary was quite helpful too, as it allowed me to keep up with the games despite knowing very little about the subject matter.
Great work. I hope we'll see more of these in the future.
|
Was this recorded at all Bluewolf? Couldn't make it home to watch, but I'd love to see it.
|
On January 18 2011 10:12 Loophole wrote: Was this recorded at all Bluewolf? Couldn't make it home to watch, but I'd love to see it.
It was recorded on my livestream, but may take another 2-3 hours for it to show up.
|
Recording is now up! Located at: this link.
Notes: There is about 15-20 minutes of pre-event video. Additionally, some sound adjustment occurred during the first game, and the commentary/camera control likely gets better as it goes on as it was the first time I've broadcasted a SC game. Finally, there were a 2-3 replay bugs throughout the event that took some time to figure out and correct.
Also - thank again to Kiante for all his help with the restream and settings!
|
Awesome idea man. To bad I didn't find out about it until it was over
|
I watched a few of these on your recorded stream. I can't say I agree with everything you're saying haha.
|
I'm really glad i watched this event, so much memories, air maps, 2gate vs 9pool, the old LT, replay bugs and other things. Back then i didn't really follow American scene but i remember i loved to watch Froz replays.
The commentary was quite interesting too, i's a shame this didn't get more publicity.
Thank you Bluewolf for the event and Kiante for restream!

wow Bluewolf, that's an oldschool name
thanks for event ^^

that man who was looking for old replayus would love u

There is a good possibility I will do this one more time (likely January 30th) and also have organized all the replays for release by then. In terms of the livestreaming event, what could be done better / be improved? Especially in terms of commentary - I'm far from Artosis or Day[9]'s level and could likely use pointers on simple things I could correct.
|
wolf, don't delete the bugged replays, even though the replays are bugged, most of the data is still good on them really only minor things change like idle probes and such, ot would be such a waste to dispose of them all.
|

The most important thing about it is explaining the antique strats in use. Also the bits of authentic context, e.g. Day[9]'s saison du fromage on the last replay.

Thank yo for doing this, I wasn't able to watch it live, but I'll watch the record for sure. Is there any chance that you upload a replay pack ?

thanks for the vod! looking forward to these. been really wanting to see some early bw stuff since I missed so much of it.

Have a look at the polls. i cant give you timestamps, but those are the order of the games. and it started with 3(or 2?) games of pvp bluewolf vs liquid'cobalt. There was some replay bugging of the first day9 game, but the last game is day9. rekrul played zerg. bluewolf/wizard both play protoss
|
I'm watching this right now, it's really cool, thanks!
It's quite ridiculous how much this game has evoled over the years.
Haha, this inspired me to go back and watch a couple of Korean progames from 2001 with Boxer, and I just saw wraiths vs corsairs. XD Any random D player these days would kick ass if he was sent back in a time machine.

Approximate times (in hours:minutes): 00:15 - Bluewolf vs Liquid'Corbalt (RO64 CompUSA 10k) series.
01:12 - Bluewolf vs Day[9] (2 bugged replays - figured out later these do work in 1.11b, but both bug out early in the version BW chart listed. Basically, both games are incomplete / partial)
01:32 - Wizard vs Elky (KBK)
01:50 - Bluewolf vs Tasteless (think Mr. FixItOnline ladder)
02:20 - Bluewolf and Wizard vs Sindread and Jester (2v2 on Dire Straits for Recon2000 LAN)
02:46 - Wizard vs Liquid'Nazgul (WCG practice match likely as on WCG Lost Temple)
02:56 - Wizard vs Rekrul (CompUSA 10k ladder game, bugs at first but then reload it in 1.11b that fixes the issue).
03:16 - Wizard vs Froz (CompUSA 10k ladder game)
03:40 - Wizard vs Day[9] (CompUSA 10k ladder game)
03:59 - Bluewolf vs Day[9] (Mr. FixItOnline ladder game)

So is there any chance that this awesome event is ever going to repeat itself?
And your commentary was just perfect, some gaming history for everybody so we can see how the game has evolved since the suicide shuttle reaver drops on one base until today

It looks like I should finally have some free time to do this for its final iteration. I'm going to do this Sunday, Feb 20 6:15pm GMT (GMT+00:00) and will make an official thread sometime this weekend. As an added bonus, I also have obtained a far superior microphone that should make the event better as well.
Will do a similar format as before as well. Do know I am also behind on releasing the replays - but will make sure I have them organized for release in some fashion right after the event for people that are interested in them.

As an added bonus, I also have obtained a far superior microphone that should make the event better as well. Will do a similar format as before as well. Do know I am also behind on releasing the replays - but will make sure I have them organized for release in some fashion right after the event for people that are interested in them.
wow very nice, looking forward

Was having some nostalgia with people at work, and stumbled upon this. Great past replays to watch later! I need to install my starcraft exe versions soon ^^
