well i just summarized up very quick now, sorry if my post isn't too grammatically written but here u go
STX’s star player Kal almost drowned during his trip to the USA, but was luckily saved by his companions.
Kal went to LA to participate in WCG 2010 Grand Finals, and all games ended at 5am, and he, along with Flash, Jaedong, etc., went to the swimming pool in the hotel they were staying at.
Their flight is at 13:00, so they went to the pool at 6:00, when it just opened.
Kal didn’t expect the pool’s water to be so deep, and he fell into the pool. An American referee that went with them and the others all assumed Kal could swim, so they were unaware of the danger.
Only after 10 seconds of struggling did the others notice something was wrong, and the American referee said “he needs help,” so he jumped into the pool to try to help him, but apparently this referee’s swimming abilities weren’t great either, and was unable to help him.
At this time, Flash, who was swimming near by, swam towards Kal. Flash, who had learned to swim since a young age, told Kal to hold on to him, and then swam both of them back to the shore, and successfully rescued Kal. The American referee got help from Jaedong, who also didn’t know how to swim, from the shore. [T/N: wat?]
Even though no one was hurt, this was still a dangerous incident. Kal even thought “am I going to die like this?” He also said “Flash’s swimming skills, if slightly worse, I really don’t know what would’ve happened.”
After everything ended and they returned to South Korea, Kal announced this. “Flash is my savior, really thanks to him. I feel like I got new life. I will do my best to live my best now.”
LOL flash and jaedong carrying their swimming teammates to victory (life) XD. Next story: Firemen refuse to extinguish fires in house; flash and jaedong do it for them.
Another reason to learn how to swim: you can save a progamer's life!
In all seriousness, good thing Flash and Jaedong knew...
btw: 같이 빠졌던 심판 역시 수영을 하지 못해 밖에서 지켜볼 수 밖에 없었던 이제동의 필사적인 도움으로 가까스로 빠져나오는데 성공했다.
The ref who went to go in ALSO DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO SWIM. If you don't know how to swim, don't go in the water and become another victim -______- Get a stick thingie and get help.
Just erase the shore part, there isn't anything about it.
So bad. Good thing no body was drunk, since during all these WCG events, usually everyone is drunk. Glad that Kal is alright! Flash should be recognized by this act within the E-Sports community in Korea.
On October 06 2010 03:01 GGQ wrote: How do you know they weren't drunk? People don't usually just fall into pools if they can't swim.
Also lol at Flash and Jaedong carrying everyone IRL as well as in Proleague.
Because with my experiences at WCG Events, I have never seen the Koreans drink/party. Not just that, they're way to young to drink in the USA since the USA is 21 and over.
HAHAHAA omg this story is so sad in a funny way. Progamer nearly drowns in SWIMMING pool and the person who tries to save him cant even swim. Thank god for flash.
i always find it really funny / cute that the average korean cant swim. i took some koreans camping and i was worried i was going to have to save them in the lake if their life jackets failed.

I live in US. I still don't know how to swim.
Seems like where I'm from, middle class Calgary Alberta suburbs, the overwhelming majority of people have at least basic swimming skills (i.e. not drowning in a pool skills).
I get not knowing how to swim, but being able to shred water and float is something everyone should be able to do lol. But anyways this story was full of lols!

I was going to say that the 4pool comment won the thread, but then I read this. LOL
Flash is always prepared even for unexpected pool timings.
I guess I assumed they all learned how to swim since they threw the entire Ro16 of the 2009 Bacchus OSL plus the stargirls into the pool. Kal somehow lucky not to qualify? D:

im actually very interested in how saving another man's life could be construed as gay. please explain.
Just because the story seemed quite emphased, terms like "hero of my life" etc... it looks like he saved a princess in dire straits.
see my point ?
I would agree that Kal seems to have been trying to sidle up to Flash all bromance style this trip. It's funny to me because in that context this is exactly like a romantic comedy cliche in which the ditsy/awkward female lead(Kal) somehow imperils herself and must be rescued by her handsome boss/friend/colleague male love interest(Flash).
Well I'm glad that all turned out for the better, although I still don't understand if Jaedong was decent at swimming or if he just held out a pole or something to the ref. (also omg the ref is such a failboat, chance to save a progamer and stuff hahaha) Anyway gogo Flash & JD haha

How is it possible that there was no life guard around the pool? This seems like big negligence from the hotel management, accidents always happen, there just has to be someone watching and ready to assist. Good to know that everything turned up well, Kal was really lucky Flash's a good swimmer. Well done Flash.

The comments are hilarious. But I do wonder, are there statistics for people drowning in South Korea (and USA)? If there are so many people that cannot swim... in Germany it is pretty hard to NOT learn swimming and of course there are still some that manage to drown. I would like to compare data.
I'm sorry but I cant help to laugh at this sentence:

You'd be surprised at the number of people who don't know how to swim in Taiwan. Last time I went to the beach in Taiwan me and my sister were the only one in the water, and this is an ISLAND about the size of maryland + delaware. There are a lot of Taiwanese fishermen and stuff but they're mostly older, I would be a lot of the younger generation doesn't go outside of the big cities and don't learn how to swim.
This event just shows us that Jaedong and Flash are still a step above the competition.
I'm always a bit surprised to learn just how many people (especially in asia) cannot swim. I've always considered it a very essential skill. I know a guy who has Cerebral Palsy and cannot walk, but he can swim.

Yeah it's weird to me too. I learned to swim when i was 6(?) and its just been natural since then. Really weird to think some people cant do it.
Translation is a little sloppy, here is the corrected part:
At this time, Flash, who was standing nearby, walked across the water towards Kal. Flash, who had been graced with supernatural powers since a young age, told Kal to embrace him as his lord and savior, and then walked both of them back to the shore, and successfully rescued Kal from his sins and promised him eternal life.

I don't think there's such a thing as a 'regular' pool in the US. If there's a standard for 1.8m pools or something in Korea, that could be why Kal thought he could handle the pool.
A lot of pools here have an one end that is like 10-15ft (3-4m) deep for diving, and an end like 3 ft (1m) deep for kids and people who can't swim.
Whoah when was this exactly? We were with the korean team most of the days they were here and they never mentioned this happening. The pool at the Wilshire Grand wasn't THAT deep and KaL is about my height. That's nucking futs!
this is the best thing i've read this week. is there anything flash CAN'T do? seriously though i'm glad it turned out ok so we can all laugh about it afterwards
I think there are like at least dozens of Korean/chinese exchange students that drown in British Columbia alone each year. Asians really need more swimming lessons. o_o
And so yeah, I guess Flash has truly surpassed Jaedong now...
lol that's hilarious, I can't swim well but I really don't understand not being capable of not drowning in calm water.... I guess panic can make you stupid or something.
That's pretty funny (not KaL almost drowning, of course) -- but how the lifeguard/referee or whomever can't even save someone, and then Flash to the rescue.
On October 06 2010 02:52 Slayer91 wrote: LOL flash and jaedong carrying their swimming teammates to victory (life) XD. Next story: Firemen refuse to extinguish fires in house; flash and jaedong do it for them.
Only rich countries per capita can afford the pools to train all young students swimming. Also countries with sea/lakes often have those assets completely reserved for tourists. Even in the US various studies show 40-50% of the people can't swim, with Asians having the worst percentages (and black kids above 60%). I couldn't find a comprehensive study worldwide, but extrapolating from those partial results, the non-swimmer percentages must be way above 50-60%.
Just erase the shore part, there isn't anything about it.
It seems like the only one that knew how to swim was Flash, (wtf Koreans, you're surrounded by water :x). Jaedong saved the ref from the shore (probably with the pool skimmer) because Jaedong also can't swim, which is a bit smarter than jumping to save someone when you can't swim yourself...

Also like someone said: The fact that these places are islands only makes people less likely to know how to swim. That means everyone is jam packed onto these tiny areas, and especially in big cities, real estate is at a ridiculous premium (I stayed at my cousin's place in Korea, and it was a pretty nice 3 bedroom condo, but later I found out it cost the equivalent of 1.2mil USD and was rather amazed). Therefore pools are scarcer, since they're a luxury, so it's harder to learn how to swim.

Ok, here's the *entire* real story because Facebook decided to cut my masterpiece short.
THE REAL STORY
Jaedong saw Kal drown in the pool because no one around him could swim and realized that it was an incredibly unfortunate and unnecessary tragedy because Kal is a really great person and a great StarCraft player. He then decided to take matters into his own hands and summoned his ultra-secret time-traveling Nydus canal so that he could travel to the past and convince Flash's mother to make her son take swimming lessons, thus providing Flash with the life-saving skills he needed to rescue Kal (and perhaps others, should the need arise).
He didn't opt to save Kal himself because he's a very modest kind of person (for non-StarCraft things - for StarCraft things he tells it like it is) and wanted Flash to get all the glory, etc. for saving Kal's life. He didn't talk to Kal's mom because he realized that this would be an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the caliber of character possessed by Korean pro StarCraft players (gambling match-riggers excluded), since he knew Flash would be a graceful hero and Kal would show his maturity through a very heartfelt appreciation of Flash's actions.
He knew that he was still technically putting Kal's life at risk, but he also trusted Flash's unwavering sense of duty and hyper-awareness of crisis situations to keep Kal away from the emergency room.
Furthermore, Jaedong didn't use the secret Nydus canal to travel back in time and cause him to win the WCG semifinals against Flash because it would've been highly unethical. Jaedong knows that when he's on his deathbed, he will not want to regret the stain on his personal integrity from using illegitimate means to win one single WCG title (which he's already won before), even if nobody else were to find out. I completely admire him for this.

Wow G5 that was a hella long msn log but the IMPORTANT PART is below:
so all of us were drowning at the same time and jaedong from a hot tub realizes that it's mad serious comeso ver i heard he can't swim and he grabs the ladder from the pool we didn't have any tube or anything and he pulls out his hands for me to grab and at that moment, i had to let kal go cuz we were all drowning, and i was about to die i drank so much water and flash was closer to the ground from kal's side so i let it go and i tried to grab jaedong's hand it wouldn't reach it i used up all my power to reach it and somehow grabbed it and i got up to the ground and i ran to kal's side and grabbed him up to the ground and puked everywhere and we were liike all exhausteed my heart was pumping like a MOTHAFUCKEr for like an hour straight as well as kal
jaedong should have thrown one of them his balloon zergling to float on. In the bus on the way back to the hotel he looked like he really liked it too much though haha
Lack of swimming skills is understandable. Money that could be spent on building and maintaining pool infrastructure, let alone clean rivers and lakes, is money that is often spent elsewhere in many countries. I can swim because I had the opportunity to learn, though my school county didn't demand students be able to swim.
Heroic efforts by all of them. Though yeah it's a bit silly that so many non-swimmers found themselves in such a deep pool.
This is sad, scary, hilarious and awesome at the same time. Flash to the rescue. Jaedong, Kal AND the WCG guy not knowing how to swim (i thought everyone knew nowindays).
Would of been tragic as hell though if something did go wrong.
Edit: Read G5s post and it seems Jaedong and the ref are heros too :D
In a recent interview Flash stated "I am very happy to save a human being. However, next WCG I want to save two at the same time. I want to be the best at saving people."
Oh god something about imagining 4 guys struggling to save each other from drowning in a swimming pool is just fucking hilarious. Like I would love to just be a fly on the wall watching the chaos.
so it was midnight, I was at one of my friend's room with bunch of other ppl , drinking like crazy since it was our last night, Nyoken(who came over to watch wcg from arizona didn't have a room to stay so i let him stay for couple of days) wanted to go to sleep, so we went back to my hotel room. my room was right next to flash/jaedong's room , so we stopped by and said bye or whatever and went back to the room. few seconds later jaedong/flash/kal comes over saying that they wanted to hang out more and stay up since they have to wake up early in the morning, but my real roommate was already sleeping so we had to go over to their room instead.
we were just talking crap, having fun etc etc and later on jaedong was like "let's go to spa, it opens at 6 am, since no one will be there it's gonna be ok" so we're like yea w/e maybe we can do that so we went down around at 6:10amish (nyoken had to go to sleep since he didn't wanna swim with his underwear on) , anyways we were relaxing in a spa..and all of sudden flash goes into pool saying that he loves to swim, and kal follows. and i just went in too (spa was kinda small for us to fit in) so we were swimming, we were swimming back and forth, and all of sudden Kal stops in the middle of a pool(3 meters depth) and started struggling himself, at one point we thought he was fking around but as the time goes by we're like wtf , is he actually serious? so i went there to save him, and all he had to do is just let me do the job but instead he kept pulling me down into the water, and i kept trying to fight him in the water so that i can grab him to the ground, but he kept pulling me down and i was drowning at the same time. flash comes over and finds out how serious the situation was and he tried to grab kal at the sametime, and now KAL pulls flash down too, and 3 of us started drowning in the water, and jaedong from a spa sees us and comes to us pulls out his hand towards me, and i had to let kal go since i, myself was already drank so much water, and couldn't do anything but drowning, jaedongw as like 10 cm away from me, i tried to grab it but i was so exhausted, but somehow i pulled up all my power to grab his hand, and he pulled me towards him and i survived, and at the same time flash gets kal towards the ground and saves him it was so scary since we couldn't touch the ground with our feet and didn't know what to do when they're no one around us. it was a very serious situation, i honestly don't understand all the comments that has been made here, everyone loling rofling when this thing could have been worse :/
well i just summarized up very quick now, sorry if my post isn't too grammatically written but here u go
oh yea btw we all knew how to swim, i think something went wrong with kal at that moment, that's why we all thought he was joking, but...came out that he wasn't, we drowned cuz kal was pulling us down, not cuz we didn't know how to swim
In sweden you must learn to swim in school... how can you not know to swim? thats like not knowing how to ride a bicycle? anyway flash is a fucking hero lol
Interesting. Well now we know the truth from the mouth of someone who was there (should update the OP with the last posts).
Kal, being such a big guy, would surely have the force to drag down 2 other people with him if he had a panic attack or some other weird thing.
Thankfully Flash was strong enough to carry Kal out and that Jaedong was able to help the WCG guy since if the situation remained as it did without a 3rd party things could of been fatal.
Ugh that would of been some terrible news to wake up to to see "2 progamers and official die in pool."
I know a lot of schools used to have mandatory swimming lessons but they have since gone away
It's always kind of shocking to me that people can't swim, it's like not being able to ride a bike to me, it's part of growing up, you are supposed to have learned that.
although i wasnt there slog did come back looking really exhausted. he was breathing really hard and seemed like he might throw up. kal is really big so its pretty believable that kal just kept pushing slog down in order to try and reach the surface. i asked slog why he didnt just go to the bottom and jump back up becuz 10ft isn't really deep and he said he was just freaking out and didn't think about it. good thing flash and jaedong were there!

lol swimming and riding a bicycle are not essential life skills, particularly if you a) live in a small country where you can't have huge municipal swimming pools everywhere and/or b) do not live in China or Portland, Oregon.
I would actually argue that it's much, much worse for first-world children to not understand the basics of programming and computer literacy than not know how to swim in this day and age.
Wow, reading the first hand account is really scary. So glad it turned out fine. I guess it's really no surprise that Kal panicked when he was drowning.
this is an amazing story, mostly because its true.
also to anyone who has ever had to/tried to save someone who was drowning- it is a LOT harder than you would think because people panic and make it a LOT harder than just simply grabbing and swimming, especially when they are flailing around throwing arms/legs in all directions, it can be quite difficult.
so it was midnight, I was at one of my friend's room with bunch of other ppl , drinking like crazy since it was our last night, Nyoken(who came over to watch wcg from arizona didn't have a room to stay so i let him stay for couple of days) wanted to go to sleep, so we went back to my hotel room. my room was right next to flash/jaedong's room , so we stopped by and said bye or whatever and went back to the room. few seconds later jaedong/flash/kal comes over saying that they wanted to hang out more and stay up since they have to wake up early in the morning, but my real roommate was already sleeping so we had to go over to their room instead.
we were just talking crap, having fun etc etc and later on jaedong was like "let's go to spa, it opens at 6 am, since no one will be there it's gonna be ok" so we're like yea w/e maybe we can do that so we went down around at 6:10amish (nyoken had to go to sleep since he didn't wanna swim with his underwear on) , anyways we were relaxing in a spa..and all of sudden flash goes into pool saying that he loves to swim, and kal follows. and i just went in too (spa was kinda small for us to fit in) so we were swimming, we were swimming back and forth, and all of sudden Kal stops in the middle of a pool(3 meters depth) and started struggling himself, at one point we thought he was fking around but as the time goes by we're like wtf , is he actually serious? so i went there to save him, and all he had to do is just let me do the job but instead he kept pulling me down into the water, and i kept trying to fight him in the water so that i can grab him to the ground, but he kept pulling me down and i was drowning at the same time. flash comes over and finds out how serious the situation was and he tried to grab kal at the sametime, and now KAL pulls flash down too, and 3 of us started drowning in the water, and jaedong from a spa sees us and comes to us pulls out his hand towards me, and i had to let kal go since i, myself was already drank so much water, and couldn't do anything but drowning, jaedongw as like 10 cm away from me, i tried to grab it but i was so exhausted, but somehow i pulled up all my power to grab his hand, and he pulled me towards him and i survived, and at the same time flash gets kal towards the ground and saves him it was so scary since we couldn't touch the ground with our feet and didn't know what to do when they're no one around us. it was a very serious situation, i honestly don't understand all the comments that has been made here, everyone loling rofling when this thing could have been worse :/

Coming into this thread and reading it at first was a little scary and a little funny at the same time, but after reading the guy's version who was actually there made me rethink this whole thing, this was some serious shit, although I hate JD as a programmer with every inch of my body and soul I am truthfully thankful he was there and notice and react quick enough and took the best course of action. IMO JD is as much of a hero, if not more than Flash.
Wow, seems like it was really serious! Good to hear everyone's okay though haha, I laughed a few times reading that article XD but good to hear what actually happened from SloG other than the ridiculous "everyone fell into the pool and couldn't swim and flash was randomly swimming there and saved everyone" hahaha

Have you ever had a cramp while swimming? A bad cramp can mess up even the best swimmer, and it just goes downhill once you start panicking.
It's really scary (now that the actual participant clarifies it exactly as it was), but I'd still expect no one would die that day, even if things went worse. Because, at first Kal would pass out from air deprivation, then the other two better swimmers would be able to secure themselves, pull him out (even though he's very big), and force him to spit the water and start breathing. There is enough buffer time; it would take minutes of him passed out before he can't be saved anymore. Of course, that's extremely shocking situation to be in. I'm glad it didn't go that far.
Now, this may sound too far-fetched, but I think we could at least theorize progaming proves its usefulness for character building. Flash and Jaedong certainly are the best progamers you can find to have learned how to remain calm and focused in disastrous situations and pull unlikely survivals.

I figured that's about what happened.
If any of you have EVER tried saving a drowning person, make sure to calm them down first. Their first instinct when they're drowning is to grab w/e they can and pull, so if u stretch out a hand to save them they will grab you and pull you under the water in an attempt to float up. Really requires a lot of strength to save a someone who's flailing and pulling and grabbing and just not cooperating with you.

Yeah when I did a short life-saving course the first thing we did was learn how to properly move a limp, unconscious body. Then it was how to locate and use lifesaving equipment .

Yeah, trying to help a drowning person when you're in the water yourself can be tough if they start to panick. Best thing you can do if the drowning person grabs you is try to head to the bottom yourself, as this usually freaks them out and they let go.

I was a lifeguard in High School (~8 years ago) and the basic technique we learned for saving drowning victims was to come up behind them and lock up both of their arms by reaching under their arm pits. That makes it much easier to pull them back to the side without them flailing around or grabbing you.
The lifeguard has a rescue tube in this picture, but it works the same without it.
OMG, this is AWESOME. Flash is bonjwa in SC, Ping pong, and Swimming (lol) who would've guessed? I'm also surprised Flash could save Kal seeing as Kal is HUGE and Flash is tiny

my favorite part is "flash, who was swimming nearby" i just find this sentence so funny it's like two people were drowning in the pool while flash was calmly swimming "nearby", until he finally decided to stop the drama and step in
Flash isn't too small really but yeah great for him man if even one thing went different we could be without one more great sc player todAy
But yea the refs side of the story should be added to the op so as to make things a bit more accurately represented it just makes him look like a fool here lol
Flash and Jaedong have strong backs from carrying their teams in proleague, I'm not surprised they were able to carry those two to safety.
Seriously though, that would have been super sad if this news was instead 'Flash, Jaedong, Kal and an American WCG ref drown', which it very well could have been. Damn, can you even imagine?
Damn it .....now I cant hate Flash anymore. Good thing they are all fine.
Anything can happen when you swim... When I was young I had a cramp in the pool and was so lucky because i could barely touch the bottom and my friends pull me to the side. I know how to swim but i was in panic mode back then and i wasnt even in the deep.

Jaedong wouldn't have drowned, he was chilling in the hot tub. The other 3 were swimming.

I live in Australia, and by memory none of the schools I have been to ever taught us to swim? My parents put me into swimming lessons as a baby so I am pro swim . I always thought it was odd how people couldn't swim, since its so easy but I guess you can't do things you don't know how to do.
I guess schools teach people to swim in Sweden?
On a second note, this wasn't even a beach? It was a pool wasn't it? drowning in a pool at age 19+, I don't know what to say really, but I guess if your scared, you don't react like you normally would and you just freeze.
That's weird most suburbs near sydney have swimming classes offered to school. Of course its not mandatory and they need parents consent. But I'm pretty sure there are several government programs setup to ensure kids learn to swim.
This story is almost too good to be true!
All the photoshops are hilarious lol keep em coming.
Kal being very tall is another reason for him to completely freak out for not being able to touch the bottom (as he's probably used to, easily).
Jaedong suggesting to go at an hour when no one's there, and Flash on top of that going into unknown pool, could have become responsible for safety neglect. So good they also saved the day. And it's pretty understandable why they enjoy any opportunity for unobserved fun, of course.
I think people are misinterpreting the story when they say the ref tried to jump in and save Kal even though he couldn't swim. It can be very difficult and dangerous to save someone who's actually drowning. They have a powerful instinctive reaction to use anything possible within reach to get themselves above water. If you go near them, they'll push you under to get themselves up. It's not something a drowning person can control--they'll do it every time.

If he jumped in to try to save them despite not knowing how to swim, he might have. There was a pretty sad story a while back about how one kid was drowning, and all their friends jumped in to try to save the first person, and ended up drowning eachother from grabbing and pushing down on eachother. They all died.
So it's a very good thing Flash and Jaedong were good swimmers.
I am sort of concerned about all the jokes; I guess it might be funny in the distant future but just glad everyone's OK; after reading the updates on what happened it bothers me that people don't take it more seriously. I think maybe you have to have that panic/drowning experience before you appreciate how truly terrifying it is.

its hard not to find it funny when you read about it already knowing at the beginning that all went well. Of course for you it was pretty hardcore but...for someone reading this 1000s of miles away on his PC thats pretty funny If something had gone terribly wrong of course the reactions would be very different..

Oh Wow, SloGgerDoGger Flash and Jaedong teaming up to save the day, I know this is a serious story but, thats an awesome tale you can tell people one day.
I don't find it funny especially if I had woken up to the news of like 3 deaths, 2 of which are SC legends. I'm glad everything worked out and I'm sure this will bring the 3 of them closer.
How insensitive can people be? Lots of peope can't swim, probably including many hotshots in this thread.
Being close to drowning is not exactly a fun experience, and saving someone from drowning is not something that you forget easily either. I saved a friend when I was a teenager and of course him being alive is great, but it still gives me the chills. He could swim too, but just started flailing and simply sank two meters down to the bottom. I can't remember how I got him up. Just remember all the air bubbles and him kind of standing on the bottom, next I remember is that I drag him on the surface to the shore (this was a lake) close by.
And to you people repeating how tall Kal is; if you've never been in anything other than a kids pool you might not want to make jokes about others. In Norway most pools are from 1 to 4 meters, and a person with panic can drown in a small puddle anyways. You only show your own ignorance with such comments.
In addition I'm glad Flash got Kal to shallow water, because if he had tried to get him out of the pool at the deep end with no practice doing so this could have ended badly (you need to do things in a certain order to get yourself and the person you are saving out of a pool where you have no footing, even with a ladder).
I love every new poster that didn't read previous entries from slog ("we all can swim") or from actual lifeguards about the difficulty of saving someone drowning ("it's f-ing hard if they're conscious") and instead post some shit like "wtf nerds couldn't swim?" If anything, it suggests you're the ignorant one, not them.
It's not an education/life experience/progamer issue, it's a 6am, drunk, jumping from hot->cold water (if I'm understanding correctly), swimming issue. As was mentioned before, it's serious business, even for a strong swimmer, and the posts here demonstrate that most people don't realize it. They put themselves in a situation that all the life experience and swim classes in the world wouldn't prepare you for. Next time you're out getting hammered with your buddies and someone suggests you go for a swim, remember this!
the drunk part hurts but honestly you should at least know how to tread water, in a pool you can also always use the bottom and go up and down.
Also pretty much any pool like that will have a life saver nearby just throw it in the pool to him before jumping in, or grabbing the poles they keep by them. Almost all situations like this it's better to think calmly and react with a plan after taking a few seconds.
It really should be basic knowledge if you spend any time in / near water how to deal with drowning. I spent a lot of time over the summer swimming in a nearby body of water and I never felt in danger at all even though it had a pretty good current and I would swim out to the middle alone. You can tread water for a very long time if you know the techniques.
Owell honestly it was a good thing you did jump in and try and save him. It is possible you guys might not have noticed him drowning. It was a very good thing you at least recognized the danger he was in but it was a very foolish situation everyone here should learn from.

it was 6am and he hadnt slept a wink. pool depth can be quite deceptive and i doubt kal looked around to check for signs indicating the depth. you do stupid things when you're sleep depraved.
The ref did know how to swim, he just didnt know how to save Kal who was paniccing and pulling him down and then he started to drown too, big difference ;p. Flash for the win though, goldenboy.
This sounds like the beginning of a very traumatizing slash fiction. Alcohol, men, life-saving heroics, etc. Thankfully none of the progamers lost their swimwear during the struggle.

Ugh that would of been some terrible news to wake up to to see "2 progamers and official die in pool."
damn... jaedong was at the wrong place at the wrong time! he missed his chance for a dual gold next season!

Flash is such a baller he rapes people left and right in SC:BW and in real-life he saves peoples lives. I have a feeling Flash will get sent into North Korea to assassinate Kim Jong-Il.
O_o So in reality Kal would have been just fine if he hadn't overreacted. I guess that's natural but meh. It's really strange to me how some people would go into deep water without being able to swim... I'm a terrible swimmer myself but even so it's not that difficult and you can just let yourself fall down to the floor and then jump up to grab the edge or whatever. I guess it's difficult to think properly in that situation though.
Actually, come to think of it, this incident is a pretty good metaphor for the state of BW. Protoss treading water and almost drowning completely; terran the hero getting all the credit and zerg doing well but destined to be the runner-up to the terran hero.

You must have been guarding for a racist pool or something if you have the gall to make a comment like that. There shouldn't be any situation where you have to point out and notice that all your drown victims have been of one race. It's pretty unprofessional for you to even look at it in that way.

That's exactly the reason people need to cheer up. It didn't happen and I am glad about that. Have you never had some accidents that might have been life threatening if it went wrong? but afterwards laugh about it? Cheer up and goes to the rest of the people reading the thread. if that guy said something like why didn't he drown then it'd be another matter and I'd be like you flaming him. Everyone here is happy that KaL didn't drown (and the ref).

God, can you people stop laughing about this? 2 people almost drowning is NOT FUNNY. There was a good chance that Slog and Kal could be dead now if Flash and Jaedong hadn't acted the way they did. Would you be making memes and one liners about that too?

This. I read a title like "Kal almost drowned," and then tons of people don't even worry if he's alright now? A near-death experience is scarring for loads of people, Kal not being an exception, which at the very least might affect his psyche, and a great BW player could be dead now.
dunno if this has been posted, but alot of people are loling sayinf the ref that tried to save them couldnt swim. IMO, if they had drowned it would be a tragedy. They didn't, so the best thing we can do is have some humor about the situation (and get these dudes to learn to swim).
I've been saved from falling off of buildings by my friends. If I fell it would be terrible, but I didn't. We all just sat there for a while going: "shiiiit man...." and laughing...its tthe best thing to do in that situation.

I'm glad everyone is okay too. I nearly drowned at Crystal Springs when I was 5. I was on one of the tube rides, and suddenly I slipped in between the hole on the tube. Stuck upside down. I remember just staring at this teal-ish colored water and thinking wow it's sure pretty. I black out and wake up to find my dad frantically drying me and my mom reduced to tears, bro was confused and scared. Actually I have to thank my bro, he is the one who noticed me missing. Nevertheless, my family never went to Crystal Springs ever again.
I saved one of my buddies from drowning once in a lake when we were in middle school, it is very easy to have the struggle and pull you underaswell, I freakin pinned his arms against him though to keep him from pulling me.
I still remember how scared I was, this is why you should always teach your kids to swim, and not just to stay afloat, to actually swim really well, before you let them go swimming on their own.

Me either, we don't usually see these progamers personalities outside of Starcraft.
How do people even drown? When I was like 7 I didn't know how to swim (I had to teach myself lol) and I went down a water slide into water where I couldn't touch the bottom with my head above the water. So I just walked along the surface and got to lower waters in no time. The life guards didn't even notice. I guess Kal must have panicked instead of using common sense.
The whole story is surreal and Flash is awesome, but I'm curious to know if there was a reaching pole in the pool and if that's what Jaedong used(just reread and realized he used his hand to pull sloggerdogger in). A ring buoy or some other flotation device could have worked too.
As a lifeguard, I've "saved" drowning people with a reaching pole before and each time it only took 5-10 seconds to simply grab the pole and pull someone in. It's 100 times less epic than jumping in and carrying someone, but it's a lot more effective and safe. Flash and Kal both could have been in trouble if Kal had panicked a bit more.
edit: my point is: don't try to jump in and save your friends if you can just throw/reach with something. It seems like common sense, but people tend to panic in these situations. But Flash saving Kal like that did make for a better story .
why does everyone act like they haven't seen the first hand account of the story lol its not that the ref couldn't swim, it was just kal freakin' out
and i think that this was in a hotel? in america not korea afaik
as for all the comments about korean children not knowing how to swim, many of the middle -> upper class children do know (as their parents can easily afford sending them to YMCAs and public swimming things etc.) just as less poor kids know how to, just like how it is in the states really. this isn't the end-all determiner but it seems to be true to some extent.

It's a little hard to use common sense and not panic when you're drowning. Also I feel like the fear of water increases over time if you never learn how to swim, so while 7 year old you might have walked out like a boss, Kal was probably extremely scared.

Because you're special. Is that what you are trying to say? Ok, move on.
Just read the whole thread...got lots of laughs...
At this time, Flash, who was swimming near by, swam towards Kal. Flash, who had learned to swim since a young age, told Kal to hold on to him, and then swam both of them back to the shore, and successfully rescued Kal
But no one mentions Flash being able to talk to Kal when he is underwater...was that assumed?
I've never laughed over something like this in months maybe even years. I guess "Korean's can't swim." Flash is a hero, an inspiration at that, he proves that progamers are superior human beings in life as well and not just "video games."
Kind of funny that of all people to save him, Flash does. To all the people to that are talking about the ref not being able to swim, I'm sure he's able to swim, but saving someone is totally different. You literally have to hold the person down when you save someone, because they are flailing around like everyone would if they are in a dying situation.
I want to hang out with the Dong and Flash and save people from drowning We could be a two men and a God team saving cats from trees and help old people across the street!
What is with the title change? Kal didn't "slip" in the pool, he decided to go swimming. Also Kal didn't pull the referee into the pool, the referee followed Flash and Kal. It's only when Kal was in trouble and the referee swam over to help that Kal pulled him under.

From what I gather from the first hand account, Kal was, at least, capable of swimming. He just must of cramped up or something. Probably just too drunk/tired to do anything other than panic and thrash around when that happened. Good thing everything turned out alright =].

Rofl. Get off your moral high horse and lighten up. Kal lived, and everything was okay in the end. It's not some mortal sin to joke about a scary situation days after the fact.
Someone that was just declared Bonjwa and the best player in the world follows up by saving someone's life. That's funny and ironic. People are going to make jokes.
But I understand that you saw this and thought "OH GOOD AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ME TO LOOK MORALLY SUPERIOR ON AN INTERNET FORUM," so it's whatever.
BTW - since I haven't seen this mentioned in the thread yet - many hotel pools (and other pools on privately-owned property) in the USA won't have life-guards, just a big sign saying "No Lifeguard On Duty. Swim at own Risk" or similar. I'd have expected some place snazzy enough to have a "spa" to have one, but not necessarily.
tbh I'd never really considered it before - most people I know tend to think even having to have the signs is a little silly, just because so many people here do know how to swim - but on reflection I'm not really sure why it's legally possible to run a pool with no lifeguard.

If you actually read the first hand account from slog4 POV, you would realize that Jaedong was the one who initially saved everyone. If jaedong did not grab slog4 out of the pool, it is very likely that both him and Kal would of died, and possibly flash as well. Jaedong removing 1 person allowed flash to concentrate on just Kal rather than kal AND slog.
