I'm out of town for thanksgiving and the city I'm in has free public wifi. Unfortunately, they have port 6112 blocked and that's what everybody needs for starcraft. Anybody know of any workarounds? Back in the day I used to torrent at IHOP and just used tunneling to get around the block but that was built in to utorrent. Is there any way to run Starcraft that way, through tunneling? Or does anybody know of any other way I can get around this? I would imagine it's a relatively common problem, so surely there is a way.

This is probably not going to work in your situation, but I found this story fun. I was once at my grandmother's house, and I was using their neighbor's internet. Typical family doesn't bother to secure their network that much. Their modem's password was never changed, so I just went ahead and port forwarded 6112 for them, so I could host over the weekend.

yeah chances are if its unsecured then u can just log into the router and forward the ports yourself. i dont know what OS you are using but if its xp just type ipconfig into a command prompt and type the default gateway into firefox

On most routers on the log in prompt will tell you what model it is. just type that in to google and get the default login.

Edit: If its free public wifi at some store the scrap what i said. if its someones house then it should work. i.e. netgear, belkin

I know with warcraft 3 you could tell it to use another port and then open that... But I'm not sure if you could change what ports StarCraft uses.

Not to be a pessimist, but I don't think there's a way around this. Like disco said, most public wifi are going to secure their router page. Some use an obscure ip so you can't access it to begin with, like my college's wifi.

You can try this, but most likely it's not going to work.

The program has a section for forwarding ports to certain programs but I never used it myself.

You can change the port by adding the registry key
HKLM\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Starcraft\Game Data Port
Make sure to add it as a DWORD key. Modify the data and make it something unblocked. 81 is a good bet. Just remember to change it when you get home.

Also if you are trying to check for default passwords you can

A) Google the name of the router and get the PDF file for that router. You can copy/paste it when you connect to your default gateway through your web browser (like I would type 192.268.1.1 into the address bar)

B) You can walk up and press the hard reset if it isn't on the default pass and that should make it lose its settings.

Also if you are on a mac you can set global proxy settings. On a PC you have to do some command line stuff.

in my student dorm the port 6112 is also blocked i worked it around with vpn and yourfreedom. now i can play 1v1s but as soon as 3 people are in the game it starts to lag. does anybody have a clue why?

ChaosLauncher can change the port Starcraft uses to communicate with the internet. Maybe try that.
