[the interview has two sections, one about her progaming side and the other about her personal side]
From Nate News, 10/21/09:
"If I have a daughter, I won't let her become a progamer," TossGirl
TossGirl entered ProLeague after winning four major women tournaments. She became a progamer against her parents' will. Though she has failed to enter the major individual leagues and has not scored a win at Proleague, she still presses on.
[Starcraft and STX SOUL]
The most memorable tournament and games? - The Heritage Match in the last July, which was a main event for the eStars Seoul and when I beat Reach. And the game against a Chinese player at ESWC. My Mechanic strategy was thought to be weaker than my Bionic strategy, but I won with Mechanic and was glad to show to my fans that I put a good effort.
Your gaming pattern is the one where you do well but collapse at once. It seems that you lose your ground against unexpected plays. Please explain your gaming pattern: what's good, what's bad, and what to improve. - I am not like that when I practice offline or at home, but during televized matches I get nervous because of the camera and the crowd. That's why I collapsed a lot when games get hectic. The good is that I pull fast attacks and lead psychologically. The bad is that I lose my ground during hectic games and my control. But I'm improving with practice.
The Samsung coach January used to be a female progamer. Is becoming a coach in your mind? What kind of coach? - I've never thought of that. But if I become one, I wanna be like the coach Kim of our team. He treats players with trust, so they believe and follow him. I wanna become a coach with that kind of relationship.
How did you feel about beating Reach and [NC]Yellow on the televized matches? - It feels good to win no matter who the opponent is. In retrospect, I had practiced a lot for the game against Reach, but he wasn't being careful enough. I had won against [NC]Yellow before at the WCG preliminary, and even then he wasn't being careful enough. Because the opponents lose guard, I feel like I should try harder. I wanna be able to win whether the opponents lose guard. Then I'll be really happy. But I feel like players won't lose guard on me now.
Who do you practice with at STX SOUL? Who are you friend with the most and how's the team atmosphere? - I practice with everybody and am friend with everyone. Among them, Notice and YoonJoong get along with me well.
It's true that STX SOUL has many good players, but you don't get to play often though you're the most senior. Is this purely because of the skill or have you thought of this from the side of sexual discrimination? Has the coach mentioned this? About the fair level of getting to play. - Except ACE, there are 11 progaming teams, and no team gives you a chance to play just because you're the most senior. The same with ACE. It's naturally like that as progamers. For a team to win, the players with the most skill and the best condition should get to play and that's fair. Of course I wanna get to play, so I'm doing my best to get to that level of skill and condition. I've never thought of it from the side of sexual discrimination. The team is considerate of me rather than discriminates.
What you think about Starcraft 2? What race will you play? - I haven't played it yet. I watched it on TV, but I don't know how it is different from the original and didn't think about what race I'll play. I started out as a Protoss for the original but changed to Terran because it fits me better. I do wanna play Starcraft 2 and will pick the race that fits me the most. It hasn't been released yet, so rather than care about it I'll do my best on the original.
Who's your best progamer friend? Who's the strongest player? - I like to practice by myself, so I don't get to spend time with people that much. I'm friend with my team mates, but since we spend most of our time practicing, we never got to hang out. Every team mate is nice, so I can't pick the nicest one. The strongest players would be Calm and KT's Flash.
What do you think of the job title "female progamer"? What would you say if someone wants to be one? - If I were to advise someone that wants to be a female progamer, I'll just tell her to do her best. It's simple yet true. It's like that for any job, but as a progamer you can't survive if you don't do your best. More so for a female progamer. Many give up rather than put effort when they feel the gap from the male progamers. It's sad. As soon as possible, I wanna show that the gap can be overcome by effort.
2009 is going by. Your goal now and in the future? - To play at ProLeague. I got to play during the last season but lost. It was a regret to miss the rare opportunity. I wanna get that chance again. I haven't thought about retiring yet. I'll have to one day but have never thought about the specific time. I'll do my best as long as opportunities come. Next year I plan to enter the individual leagues. My ultimate goal is to win an individual league and contributes to my team winning the ProLeague.
TossGirl and her sister (left) in 2006. Her sister is an actress.
[Personal questions!]
Your sister is an actress. Please introduce her. Do you think about becoming an actress or a model? - She was born in 1988 and was on a TV show. Lately she was featured in a Bacchus commercial (she was next to the pregnant lady). She's cuter than I am. We get along well, shopping together and stuff. Me acting or modeling? There was a chance for acting once, but I don't have it in mind. Seeing my sister, I realize it's tough and required a lot of effort. I wanna concentrate on being a progamer rather than trying other things.
And your twin sister? What does she do? - She started Starcraft with me and was good. But she didn't become a progamer and is in college. We're twins but has different sides. I'm an introvert and quiet; she, an extrovert and energetic. She's smarter than I am and does better in school. We complement each other rather than being identical. She supports me a lot.
Boyfriend? If not, what's your ideal? - Not at the moment. I'm conservative, so my ideal wouldn't be a flirty one or has many female friends around. I like someone that gives me his total attention. Someone who's inattentive and blunt to other girls but warm to me? It's nice if he looks good, but I'm not someone who's attracted by looks. Someone who consistently looks at me only. My younger sister and twin sister have the same idea. My mom worries whether any of us can get married.
Has any progamer flirted with you? - No. I'm really an introvert, so even if I'm not a girl it's hard to approach me. Plus I don't act like a girl on purpose. So most progamers don't care.
Let's say you're married and your daughter wants to be a progamer. Would you let her? - Okay for a son but no for a daughter. Being a progamer isn't good for your skin beauty. Your eyes and posture get bad too. I want my daughter to be pretty. But if she insists I wouldn't stop her. My parents opposed a lot but eventually trusted and understood me.
Other hobbies beside game? - I like playing Piano (Mozart and Beethoven). I also like to watch movies and dramas. I hang out with my sisters rather than with friends. But I don't have time because of practice, so rather than doing something I special I hang out like everybody else-movies, shopping, eating, etc. I don't know good places to eat, so my sisters usually drag me along.
How do you feel when you see disrespectful comments about you? - I don't usually read articles and comments. People sometimes tell me about bad comments, but I don't take it personally and don't care. None of my business. It's not like I tried not to care, I really don't.
Last word - I thank everyone who loves me. I appreciate the care in spite of that I haven't got to play for a while. I'll do my best and show up at ProLeague. Thank you.

She likes playing Pian0!!
amirite guys. Amirite.

One thing for sure that TossGirl is always the favorite to cheer for when she gets to play against ANYONE (maaaaaaaaaaaybe except a half-naked Boxer with bunny ears).
|
Well, there's another picture of her sister... Better than the one VOD where it showed a clip of her.
I find it kinda interesting how she recommends a theoretical daughter not to become pro-gamer. What would she say if it were a son? And, the top picture was the best one I've seen of her in quite a while... She looks a lot younger than her recent ones.
|
she's the reason i want to move to korea O.O

Hmmm so I guess the Calm x Tossgirl thing was just a rumor.
Not sure how she plans to do well in televised matches if she still has trouble with her nerves. I guess more pressure is put on her being the last female SC progamer, but her years of experience as a progamer should be enough. How is she supposed to improve at this point anyways?

tossgirl<3 glad to know her daughter wont suffer the same fate as her

good for tossgirl. hope you get a win in proleague. women certainly do get some discrimination, even if just off-color comments and such. january got told to get married by the other coach some years ago. totally understood why she didn't wear makeup all these years

!!! -> I am an ideal candidate for TossGirl's soulmate (seriously!) - due to being stuck in engineering, I don't have many female friends (go figure)
If not her I'll take any of her sisters... lol

dang it I was so happy when I thought calm was all over that!
now it appears to be false..
i feel sorry for tossgirl so before her time, or a black sheep???

Seems like a nice girl. It's a little too late for her personally, but I hope there is a female progamer (or many!) for SC2 who can keep up with the guys.
Who's the strongest player? The strongest players would be Calm and KT's Flash. Forgetting about Jaedong and Bisu? Calm is on her team so it makes sense she mentions him. I guess Flash is really scary to other teams in Proleague.
|
Wait, I'm confused, does Tossgirl have one younger sister in addition to her twin sister or is her twin sister just labeled as a younger sister?
|
I think she has a twin and a younger sister.

My ultimate goal is to win an individual league and contributes to my team winning the ProLeague.
No disrespect or anything, but I think she should set a more realistic goal. Her going past the prelims to qualify for a Starleague seems very farfetched, let alone winning one. But good for her, hope is the last thing that is lost.

ChRh said he wanted to win a Starleague in his interview after beating Bisu, progamers say this all the time. I'm sure she knows she has no chance of winning anything.
|
At least ChRh was actually one of the best players of his time, won an individual league over prime Boxer and prime TheMarine and got 3rd in two actual OSLs.

Everyone should have respect for her. Can you imagine how hard it must be to be the only female progamer left? She's said herself in other interviews how it's not as fun hanging out with guys (as she is a girl, of course, and most girls would probably agree) so for her to still be this motivated, is amazing and demands a lot of respect.
I HAVE FAITH, 서지수!
|
Ahh TossGirl how we love you.
|
She has the skill to do well, but she consistently fails to put it all together in a cohesive game when it counts. If she weren't a (kind of pretty) girl she wouldn't get as much attention, although that would perhaps benefit her given that it would mean less psychological pressure.
Unfortunately, I have to call into question a few of her answers though. No progamer has ever flirted with her? I call bullshit. Fine, she's no Jessica Alba, but she's definitely a lot prettier than most girls. Spend all day playing with guys and of course they're going to think about you. So many guys right here on TL.net had major crushes on Zia and "her" pictures weren't even close to Tossgirl's.
|
Look's like she never had any boyfriend before... And to think that there is a girl in the pro gaming house, non has ever tried hitting on her! lolz

Well considering the fact shes in a house full of shy(expect july ofc hes a pimp) nerds that doesnt really suprise me.
Or maybe the guys are just being profesionall?
I mean some people might just consider it bad style to go after a co worker or the teams got policys against it?
|
People waaaay overrate Tossgirl. Sometimes it looks like people are afraid to say: "yeah, she is plain mediocre", because they think it might look sexist or something.
Well, when rating her as a progamer, purely based on skill, I don't care if she is a guy or a girl, she just plain sucks. Had she been a guy everyone here would be bashing her saying "TossBoy sucks", "TossBoy is just a big failure", etc. But just because she is a girl, she gets her piece of positive discrimnation.
You want to say she is very popular? That she brings certain intangibles to the table, that she makes good PR or is marketable? Ok, I'll admit it. She obviously has a lot more notoriety than any other player at her skill level because she has been hanging around like forever and she is fairly cute. But skillwise she is no better than your average terran struggling between the A-team and B-team of any progaming house.
She might be more pleasant to the eyes than RoRo. She might have a whole story behind her that makes her likeable. But she is NOT good. And she ain't getting any better after all these years.
|
i had no idea she had a twin.... even if she's a fraternal twin, that's still cool.
her mom shouldn't have to worry about them getting married. there's so many people for them to choose from
|
I actually liked this interview. Despite not really liking her, she came over as a nice, realistic person. I hope she will be able to control her nerves in the future.

Don't make the (foolish) mistake of assuming that BW players are all shy nerds, nor should you assume that professionalism will always prevail over hormones. I really think she was bullshitting.

There's no question that she's popular because she's profitable, but she definitely has earned her title as progamer.
And a lot of players struggling between A-team and B-team wholly speaking have the ability to be A-team. I think that Tossgirl is one of them. That's not true for all players in that situation. Sure, she'll never be a Flash or a Fantasy, but A-teamers can only be legitimately called "mediocre" when compared to the genius S-class gamers anyway. And I think she could be an A-teamer if she could complete her game.

thx good interview, good to see shes not giving up and still putting effort in starcraft.

Hahaha.... It's so sad that she's tried for so long and yet never achieved any success outside women's leagues... It seems like the issue is her confidence and maybe she could really use some kind of therapy to help her believe in herself rather than get frustrated as soon as she's on TV and the games aren't going exactly like in practice.
Hope her effort pays off eventually.

thanks for the translation. I always enjoy hearing more about the personal side of progamers' lives.

hahaha I guess no longer dating Calm ?
Thanks for the translation! One of the more interesting interviews since it wasn't specifically from a matchup

I really think her current mindset won't let her succeed. Practicing mostly by herself? Focusing on such trivial victories?
I'm still not over the "Reach promised me to not have a short game" thing quite awhile ago - so fishy.

thanks for this translation! a lot of interesting questions
i was pretty neutral toward her but reading her responses makes me not like her very much. the section about boyfriend sounds insanely needy/insecure/egocentric, and the answer about daughter/son becoming a progamer is just flat sexist. i mean, of all the people in korea that would understand a girl struggling in a male dominated arena, you'd think it'd be her, but she gives the most ridiculous, traditional, reinforcing gender role answer you could give. come on.
|
the section about boyfriend sounds insanely needy/insecure/egocentric Most women are anyway, no biggie there.
and the answer about daughter/son becoming a progamer is just flat sexist. It's not sexist at all, maybe it's exactly because of her experiences that she doesn't wish it on her daughter? My guess is she knows it's tough and just wants an easier experience for her daughter instead of constant frustration.
she gives the most ridiculous, traditional, reinforcing gender role Well, gee, a woman who wants her daughter to grow up a woman, and that makes you hate her? You're the one that sounds sexist if anything.

She sounds like a guy... Not a single word from the interview is even relatively "girly", except the part where she wants her daughter to be pretty. But I guess that's why she's better than other women at an RTS game.

I have to wonder how much of her "ideal" boyfriend is cultural. It's certainly not something you hear from girls every day, at least here in the states.

But her reasons were purely based on the fact that her daughter "won't look pretty." Unless she is joking, I don't see how this can be interpreted in any way other than "looks are the most important thing for a girl" which are terrible values to emphasize to your daughter.
Well, gee, a woman who wants her daughter to grow up a woman, and that makes you hate her? You're the one that sounds sexist if anything. Did I say I hated her? Because of course, "growing up a woman" means having "skin beauty" and good "eyes and posture." You cannot be serious, do we live in the 1800s? Mayhaps Tossgirls daughter shall learn the finer arts like watercoulour paintings and classical piano so as to entertain a gentleman caller forthwith should the need of such arises, and to cook for him proficiently if need be. What about her birthing hips? Progaming can't be good for those birthing hips.

TossDaughter: Mama I want to be a progamer like you!
TossGirl: Don't do it, because your skin eyes and posture will be bad. Physical appearance is the most important thing for a girl.
TossDaughter: But didn't you do progaming?
TossGirl: Yes, but you see, women can't succeed in anything except when they look good. I couldn't win anything but I looked hot so they kept me around.
TossDaughter: Oh ok. Maybe I'll become a hair stylist!
TossGirl: Make sure your hair looks good!
TossDaughter: Thanks mom!

All three sisters definitely had problems with their father and mother, when they were kids. Now they need to go to a psychoanalyst, otherwise they will remain unmarried.

My guess is she knows it's tough and just wants an easier experience for her daughter instead of constant frustration. That's fine if the reason is she wants her daughter to not have a hard life. But her reasons were purely based on the fact that her daughter "won't look pretty." Unless she is joking, I don't see how this can be interpreted in any way other than "looks are the most important thing for a girl" which are terrible values to emphasize to your daughter. Show nested quote +she gives the most ridiculous, traditional, reinforcing gender role Well, gee, a woman who wants her daughter to grow up a woman, and that makes you hate her? You're the one that sounds sexist if anything. Did I say I hated her? Because of course, "growing up a woman" means having "skin beauty" and good "eyes and posture." You cannot be serious, do we live in the 1800s? Mayhaps Tossgirls daughter shall learn the finer arts like watercoulour paintings and classical piano so as to entertain a gentleman caller forthwith should the need of such arises, and to cook for him proficiently if need be. What about her birthing hips? Progaming can't be good for those birthing hips.
You have to be really deluded to derive what you wrote in your post from her answer. She's saying she'd be concerned for her daughter's health - progaming does actually accelerate eyesight problems (tossgirl and 1/3 of progamers have to wear glasses or lenses probably) and probably isn't that good for posture either. And then she says she wouldn't stop her. Pretty and skin beauty are probably just the way words translate from korean. NOWHERE did she imply she wants her daughter to be a bimbo.
I mean...If you want to engage in slippery slope logical fallacies, by all means go ahead, but don't use that as arguments for calling her sexist.

she claims that she doesn't like guys that have many girl friends, but we all know Reach nailed her after their eStars Heritage League match.
