The Group Selection
Group Selection Discussion Thread
The Steal Draft
The Steal Draft is a somewhat long and complicated process, not helped at all by the large number of players that now qualify for each MSL season. Here’s how it works:
The first eight seeds are placed into groups A through H, with the first seed in Group A and the eighth seed in Group H. The first eight seeds may never be moved by any player, they remain in the groups in which they are seeded. Seeds nine through sixteen are determined by previous MSL appearances and performance, with more obviously being better. Seeds nine through sixteen are placed into the other pair in groups A through H, but in reverse order. Seeds eight and nine would be in the same group, then seven and ten, six and eleven and so on up until the first and sixteenth.
Once players are placed into the groups, the remaining players are also ranked based upon previous MSL appearance and performances. Starting with the seventeenth, and ending with the thirty-second, each player takes his own name and places it in an open spot next to the player he wishes to play against.
After everyone has been placed upon the board, the stealing begins. It starts in ascending order at the sixteenth seed and moves all the way up to the first. Seed nine through sixteen are allowed three options: (1) Exchange himself with another player, (2) Exchange his current opponent with another player, or (3) Pass the turn and exchange no one.
Seeds three through eight work a little differently. They are able to pick two moves from the following: (1) Exchange a player in their group with another player, (2) Exchange any two other players with each other, or (3) Pass the turn and exchange no one. Seeds two and one earn a few more decisions. They are able to switch any player with another player and may do so up to three times or until they wish to pass.
For details on how this Steal Draft went, you can easily follow each step of the way in the Group Selection Discussion Thread, linked above.
Results and Standings for the Round of 32
Once again we return to a group stage for the round of thirty-two GomTV’s fourth MSL. Each group consists of four players; the Steal Draft determines their placement in each group. Each group must go through a double elimination format to determine which players will advance and which players are eliminated. If a player can get two wins before he gets two losses, then he advances to the next round. If he can’t, then he is eliminated. Two players from each group of four will have the chance to continue to fight for this season’s title.

Results and Standings for the Round of 16
Sixteen players exit the group stage and enter into the single elimination tournament. The format will now be best of three between each pair of players. A player who finished first out of his group will be paired against a player from a different group who came out second. Many of the seeds and several former champions have fallen, but that is not to say there is not ots of talent left in the tournament. There is a lot of new blood hungry for the title and many of these rising stars will want to prove they can take their game up to the next level. Players will not only be fighting to further their chances at the title, but also for seeds in the next season's MSL.
Thumbs Down Since there are four maps, there will be one map in each best-of-three match that will not be played. The players who finished first out of their group are given the opportunity to give a “thumbs down” to one of the maps. What this means is that the player will get to choose one of the four maps that he will not have to play on during this round. This allows the player the advantage of getting to remove a map that does not fit his play style or that he thinks may be imbalanced in a particular match-up.

Results and Standings for the Quarterfinals
Eight players remain, each of them earning seed for the next MSL as they enter this round. The games per match increase this round to a best-of-five format, the victor continuing on to the Semifinals. The loser will have to wait for another shot at the title next season. All seeds from the previous season have been eliminated, except for one: the returning champion, Mind, as he continue to defend his title.
Thumbs Down As with last round, there is a thumbing down of maps. However, as we move into the best-of-five matches the thumbing down changes slightly. Due to the five game format it becomes possible for a match to go to the final game in which one of the maps will be played twice. Both of the players will thumb down a map that he will be guaranteed not to have to play on twice. This ensures that he will not have to play on a map more than once if he feels it is not to his style or particularly imbalanced in a particular match-up.

The thumbing down of maps will work exactly as it did last round. The best-of-five matches continue as we enter into the semifinals and the remaining four players battle themselves down to two. The Grand Finals
The MSL, like all good things, must eventually come to an end. This season we approach that end with two players, the current OSL Champion and a Royal Road contender, out to grab his first big MSL finish. One of these two will rise above the thirty-one other players who have fallen in the tournament and cement themselves into MSL history. Jaedong and Kal, best of five, for all the glory.

bloody spoiled sc fan! I don't think ANY OTHER RTS community has a yearly map pool change. But then again, no RTS community has lasted as long as SC. Nor has any other community been as dynamic.
Meanwhile, anyone else think they should just scrap ACE? I mean, besides the nostalgic reasons, what other purpose do they serve?

Group B looks to be the most exciting. Bisu vs Jaedong should be an interesting match. And then July could finally make his come back.

plus they 3-0 KTF to make LR a sad boy

if Jaedong gets past bisu in the group stages, he's going to win it all.
the only person who can beat Jaedong right now is bisu. The only person bisu can beat right now is Jaedong. Still, I think Jaedong is going to 2-0 his group
|
I have a hunch july will run all over bisu again, I really hope him and jeadong make it out of their groups.
Also glad to see oov again, let's hope he makes it a little farther down the bracket this time.
|
its ok that they retake the maps of last season + katrina - python, they are fresh
|
poor thing that python is out. Thanks semi for all your work
|
Thank you, semioldguy . Nice work .
Damn, that will be a nice season I think .

Sad to see Python rotated out. Katrina, though, is an awesome map. Saw a lot of awesome games on it.
|
Well, Zodiac is pretty similar to python at least. I just saw Bisu lose to GGPlay on Blue Storm after destroying him on Fantasy. I know he doesn't like Blue Storm that much, but I still think he can make it. Group G also looks pretty interesting to me. Its gonna be a great MSL.
|
lol, bisu is abusing his super pvz skills by using the steals and getting 3 zergs in his group. hes not gonna have a tough time... oh, to semiolguy, thanks! we appreciate your efforts to bring us up to date with everything, its an important job and its good that someone is doing it.

July and Jaedong are going to destroy him. I BELIEVE.

Hmm, random thought, but since B is matched up with E, it is looking pretty bad for Luxury, seeing how he has go through either Bisu or Jaedong afterwards.
|
Actually, Luxury's ZvZ is really, really good.
If he meets Bisu, though. T_T
I'm already theorising bracket formations, and fbh vs Jaedong looks really possible.
Haha, imagine he owns Bisu, then owns that fag!

I think other Protoss will have a chance against Jaedong. Stork really wasn't the best measure. Besides that, Bisu can beat pretty much everyone, not just Jaedong, wherever that strange idea came from.

so few protoss that can advance....
bisu is eliminated
anytime !!!! save us !!!! PROTOSS FTW

Thank you for keeping it up to date.

O man Savior vs Anytime is going to be awesome. Anytime no doubt had helped Jaedong really shape up his ZvP, so lets see what kind of new tricks he can do against him.

Its like this for this year too. Sigh... Jaedong is gonna roll group E, Bisu probaly would've done the same. Damn... Pro SC kinda sucks for me now.
|
even yarnc beat bisu..savior must be pissed.. hopefully this will motivate savior instead of getting him crestfallen
|
Go Anytime! You're our only hope!
|
wtf? bisu... tsk tsk
good write up though...
|
Bisu you just ruined my day.
|
Lol, Bisu got 0-2 in a group full of zergs. That's hilarious, he sucks so bad, he's not a real champion and never will be.
|
his impressively short lived dominance makes me wonder if he should be considered a bonjwa in the first place lol.

LOL Bisu AND sAviOr!
GOGO XELLOS!
|
group A terran group B Zerg Group C Toss
|
I am deeply shocked.. Bisu and sAviOr.. the two players that rocked my world.. sAviOr made me play zerg.. and bisu was my nemesis.. in the fight against protoss ofcourse.
Now both are out. What is left of this world? Have we been beaten because of the new are simply faster or better? Or did bisu and savior fail due to sticking to lang to the same strategy? Can some one help me in these days of high confusion for me?
On the side: This does mean that OSL is very open for the non-seedlings to win. As the seeds are normally the best, now it seems it's not.
|
oh my God! Bisu and Savior both out of there! wow, I have nothing to say bout them anymore.
Nal_ra and Anytime may be the last strong toss players in this league. At least one of them must make it to the semis.
For Terran, I'd say Xellos and Nada. Although a lot of good T's in the list Hwasin, FBH, oov, Flash...
For Zerg, Jaedong is pretty much on top of the list.
Its gonna be a Damn Great Season!!!
EDIT: i forgot to mention Mind and Sea for Terran!
|
i'm impressed that Kal and JangBi made it, after the loss of Bisu the only protoss player that i thought would advance was Anytime, lets hope Nal_rA !!!

i predict :
Sea-Gorush Nada-Kal Jangbi-Flash Luxury-July Jaedong-Upmagic Free-Hwasin Anytime-Canata Light-Mind
|
|
Since sAviOr, Bisu and now XellOs are out of this season MSL, I can only hope that rA, GoRush, Oov and NaDa will continue to the Ro16 !
Go, go all four of you !!!
|
whos the cute girl that interviewed inter.mind last season, and appeared on some intro video on youtube. I saw it lastnight but I couldnt find it anymore. -.-

heres some confirmation on brackets semioldguy:
|
w00t! Brackets were correct!
I do wish NaDa would snap his 13-game winning streak in the starleagues.
(His last SL win was 1Set of Shinhan-3 2006 OSL finals against sAviOr!)
|
i predict NaDa vs JaeDong/Anytime final:D

The seeds from last MSL continue to drop out at 0-2 with the exception of Mind (2-1) and Kwanro (who still can)

If you would want to update the bracket above, here are the new matchups which have come to pass:
+ Show Spoiler +added matchups (recently placed players italized): Sea vs. LightJangBi vs. OrionHwasin vs. FlashMind vs. ShineNote that after free dropping out in groupplay, Jaedong has a bracket only consisting of Zergs and Terrans for his first two rounds. Mind is starting off with a TvT match again.
|
I updated the bracket with yesterdays results:
as of now, 4 out of 6 games in the ro16 are mirrors... argh
|
ugh, either jangbi or orion are guaranteed a seed...
|

Jaedong/Luxury & Flash/Hwasin is clearly the most difficult part of the bracket to make it to semifinals. Any one of those four has a decent shot considering the matchups.
Also Sea v Light teammate TvT, and Light is only one day older than Sea
Even though a lot of the seeds and top players have fallen, I still think a lot of interesting things can happen in this tournament. It gives a chance for a lot of the rising stars to settle amongst themselves who really deserves to be among the next top players and who will inevitably just fizzle out.

Sea debuted more than a year before Light though
|
A little more than 6 months according to TLPD. Seas first major league participation was Shinhan1, while Lights first was Shinhan2. Sea won the Challenge league to get to Shinhan1. Light qualified through the massive ODT(no OSC/CL) to qualify for Shinhan2.
|
The entire right half of the bracket excites me: Jaedong v Luxury, possible Jaedong v Hwasin and v Anytime/Mind. Any of those would rule.
The left side of the bracket kind of sucks, Sea v Light is cool but it's TvT. Maybe Upmagic v July will be fun.

Updated with schedule and information for the Round of 16.

i wonder if sea and light will practice together for their bo3. that would be kinda awkward
|
Jeez,..Nada has to TvP on Katrina and probably Loki II.

Small thing, July's race is colored green instead of red in the bracket.

Yeah, I noticed that. I was just a little lazy to fix it. Thanks anyway. (If you look at my entry to the bracket contest it's been changed. )

how does that thumb down work? They both thumb down blue storm and still have to play it in game 4?
|

In the map pool there are 4 maps, and in a best of 5 there are five games. Therefore one map will be played twice (usually games 1 and 5).
Thumbing down a map removes it from being the map that is played twice. Thus the repeated map will be chosen from the remaining maps in the pool, then the other 3 maps will make up the games in the middle.

This might be the fastest MSL ever to be played out.

Top Bracket I was really expecting Sea to beat Light but I guess since they're teammates it really became a coin flip. I seriously thought Sea would have had a better TvT but I guess since Light is the Super Terran with this multi-tasking skills, TvT is totally his game.
Kal is really impressing me with his play. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes farther than most people would expect him to. I still voted for Light because I like Light's TvP and he has slightly more experience, but wow. Then again Kwanro's ZvP isn't all too amazing... Sucks, I was starting to have high hopes for Kwanro since he rocks against T and Z, but I guess compared to his other matchups, his ZvP is abysmally terrible. =[
JangBi is another Protoss that comes from the PS3 era. I know very little about this guy except that he's from Samsung Khan and had a short stint on the Power Rankings. I think for him to succeed in the quarterfinals, he has to be flexible in his gameplay because he's playing the unorthodox and creative UpMagic.
UpMagiC really is a hit or miss. His unorthodox plays either pay off really well or fall flat in his face. I think with B or even A rank players he can really catch off guard, but S-rank players (such as Jaedong in Ever 2007 OSL) are not phased by those plays. Up has the ability to win with a straight-up style which he isn't afraid to show sometimes. His Boxeresque creativity can oft be his fortune or his bane.
Lower Bracket Jaedong is riding on freaking Cloud 9 right now. He is sky high and on fire, I don't see him slowing down yet. Jaedong is that freaking creature that is going to stop a N64 final (NaDa). Everybody else is like a PS3, XBox360 or a Wii.
Flash is a love or hate story with me. I love watching this kid play. I hate watching this kid play past the 20/25 minute mark. However he walked over HwaSIn in his ro16 match but I see him having little chance against the monster that is Jaedong.
NINTENDO 64 BIOTCH! When I see NaDa, it brings back the good old memories of Goldeneye 007, and Zelda: Ocarina of Time. His first game against Anytime was flat out disgusting. Send one SCV to repair a supply depot that's in red being attacked by two zealots? Yikes. It's not like he had much to micro either. But he toughed it out in the last two games and is facing WeMade's new star, Mind.
Mind doesn't wow me with micro. He doesn't wow me with his macro. What he does wow me is with his unbelievable game sense. He seems to have the right units for the right battles and times the battles for his favor. I believe that if NaDa had the game sense of Mind, he would no doubt be the best player SC has ever seen. Mind excels in what NaDa sometimes shows a lack of. This will be an interesting quarterfinal match. The brain against the machine fingers.
|
Looking at the team distribution of the top 8, it's quite different from the last msl. In GomTV S3 half of the top eight were from CJ, and half of the top 4. This year there are no CJ players and all of the top eight are from different teams except for WeMade, with Nada and Mind. It's a bit unlucky that they face each other in the quarterfinals.

Hm... no Terrans lost in the Round of 8 except to other Terrans

Or you could look at it as: No Zergs won except to other zergs

so few zergs is really unusual at this stage

Type in the player's name. Example: Savior
Then click on the button above the reply box that looks like a red hydralisk and it becomes this: sAviOr
You also can highlight just a portion of text to keep your entire post from getting converted.

i think Kal vs Upmagic for the semi-final would be orgasmic, then Kal vs Jaedong!! mmm
|
wow, wasabi's bracket has been all correct except for light>sea so far
|
Whoever wins out of Mind/Nada better win the whole thing And although I like Mind a lot, I love Nada. Hope he wins this league.
|
omg...i really hopes that NaDa has his come back and win it... wait a second, they haven start playing the semis yet right? then how did spiritofthetuna know that kal wins it?

Jaedong vs NaDa would be awesome. Another zerg protecting Nada from taking another MSL title (yes i believe that if nada is in the finals vs any of those P he would win, despite having Katrina) will be awesome

Kal has lost 3 games going into the finals while Jaedong has only lost 2. So that would mean Jaedong is going to beat Kal 3-2 with my logical reasoning
