at 53rd and 6th.

Who would have known that chicken and rice was so good. Also known as halal.

As its name implies, it's chicken, lamb, lettuce, and fried rice with white sauce + pita bread. That sauce is the fucking bomb because it's what makes the food sooooo good.

I've been eating this for like a year now.

It's this:

I had this yesterday since I had to drop something off to the city for my dad, and I decided to eat this for lunch.

I LOVE IT. I can't get sick of it

Yeah, it's the Muslim equivalent of Kosher. Like Kosher, it refers to behaviour and conduct as well as diet, but in most environments refers mainly to foods. Halal food is free of pork products, has been prepared in a certain way, and so on.

Tolerance is key. Nobody is forcing you to eat/not eat meat... you just need to respect other people's views. Sometimes they will always be different from yours. At any rate, bluntly insulting people won't get them to agree with you.

Yeah but he can't call me a moron for eating what I WANT to eat. Honestly who cares? In the end, the choice is mine, whether or not the animals were treated like shit.

Also, animals like chicken, pigs, and cows are treated terribly in general, wherever it may be. Then by your logic the whole world is stupid and ignorant, right??

you should go ask some muslims that run your city
i can see where the hate is coming from
talk about cruelty while your whole cuisine is meats and blood sausages( made from drained blood obviously rofl)
so lets not eat that shit since they electrocuted/shot/sliced those animals

Except its supposed to be done by someone who knows what they are doing and if they cut them in the right place then its really not that painful for the animal. Perhaps you should research about killing an animal in the 'Halaal' (Islaamic Manner) and 'Kosher' (Jewish Manner) befoe speaking.

There was a study done by German scientists about the Western and Halaal method of studying. I will quote from an article based on the study:

Is Islamic slaughter cruel?

The question of how an animal should be slaughtered to avoid cruelty is a different one. It is true that when the blood flows from the throat of an animal it looks violent, but just because meat is now bought neatly and hygienically packaged on supermarket shelves does not mean the animal didn’t have to die? Non-Islamic slaughter methods dictate that the animal should be rendered unconscious before slaughter. This is usually achieved by stunning or electrocution. Is it less painful to shoot a bolt into a sheep’s brain or to ring a chicken’s neck than to slit its throat? To watch the procedure does not objectively tell us what the animal feels.

The scientific facts

A team at the university of Hannover in Germany examined these claims through the use of EEG and ECG records during slaughter. Several electrodes were surgically implanted at various points of the skull of all the animals used in the experiment and they were then allowed to recover for several weeks. Some of the animals were subsequently slaughtered the halal way by making a swift, deep incision with a sharp knife on the neck, cutting the jugular veins and carotid arteries of both sides together with the trachea and esophagus but leaving the spinal cord intact. The remainder were stunned before slaughter using a captive bolt pistol method as is customary in Western slaughterhouses. The EEG and ECG recordings allowed to monitor the condition of the brain and heart throughout.

The Halal method - Read This

With the halal method of slaughter, there was not change in the EEG graph for the first three seconds after the incision was made, indicating that the animal did not feel any pain from the cut itself. This is not surprising. Often, if we cut ourselves with a sharp implement, we do not notice until some time later. The following three seconds were characterised by a condition of deep sleep-like unconciousness brought about by the draining of large quantities of blood from the body. Thereafter the EEG recorded a zero reading, indicating no pain at all, yet at that time the heart was still beating and the body convulsing vigorously as a reflex reaction of the spinal cord. It is this phase which is most unpleasant to onlookers who are falsely convinced that the animal suffers whilst its brain does actually no longer record any sensual messages.

The Western method

Using the Western method, the animals were apparently unconscious after stunning, and this method of dispatch would appear to be much more peaceful for the onlooker. However, the EEG readings indicated severe pain immediately after stunning. Whereas in the first example, the animal ceases to feel pain due to the brain starvation of blood and oxygen – a brain death, to put it in laymen’s terms – the second example first causes a stoppage of the heart whilst the animal still feels pain. However, there are no unsightly convulsions, which not only means that there is more blood retention in the meat, but also that this method lends itself much more conveniently to the efficiency demands of modern mass slaughter procedures. It is so much easier to dispatch an animal on the conveyor belt, if it does not move.

There is a Persian place near my house that sells the same stuff but its pretty bad quality and I ate their twice and never came back again.

I guess your lucky that you have a place that makes it right and its not that expensive. If its cooked by someone who knows what he is doing then its amazing!!!

The ironic thing about Halal is that they probably came up with it at the time in order have a clean and as painless way as possible way to slaughter the animal with the tools they had at the time.
Like a lot of the other things that are written in the bible and the koran, this was probably meant as guidance to the people.

It was probably a good idea at the time, but now it might not be so painless anymore, I would still be rendered unconscious by an electrical shock, then killed, rather than having my throat slit and bleed to death.
It doesnt matter though, because people wont change their ways..pretty sad that we can be held back by some old book.

Remember, the real cart comes in late at night around 6-7 PM, and sells out fast. The one that hangs out in that corner during the daytime is the sister cart! Also, beware of imitation carts across the street.

If they make the cut right, it's an instantaneous numbing blow similar to a captive bolt gun, and it's actually been tested.

You wouldn't feel the bleeding to death, because the cut is so deep that the change in blood pressure fries your brain immediately and thus your nerves stop firing.

Both the kosher/halal and western systems for getting meat are cruel to the animals. Deal with it, or stop eating it.

LOL, I used to work at 50th and 7th, and I'd go to this place ALL the time.

Yea it's very good. We call it "cheap meat"

Well according to norwegian law, we have to sedate the animal before killing it the halal way.
I thought there would be a reason for that, but then again it might be out of ignorance.

Chicken and rice is the best, that white sauce is so mysteriously GOOD.

I don't like white sauce in general, but yeah, that place rocks.
I made the mistake of getting it from across the street, and for some reason, it seemed to be vastly inferior. I can't tell if it's because that one is hyped or if it's actually better somehow, but it really does seem to taste better and that's all that counts I guess.

How did this thread turn into a debate about the ethics of animal slaughter? It's just how nature works... we kill other animals to eat. Is it cruel when a crocodile pulls an antelope into the water to drown it (and then eat it)? Is a lion breaking ethical boundaries when it catches a gazelle and eats it alive? We kill animals to eat them, not to be nice to them. If you don't like that, then... you can be a vegetarian, right? On a side note, did you guys know that gorillas cannibalize the babies of opposing tribes during territorial raids? Now THAT'S sick.

I heard that sometimes they cannibalize the babies of their own tribes, to get with the mothers because if a mother has a baby, she is totally uninterested in sex.

Now that I think about it, it might not be gorillas, but it's some kind of primate for sure.

Well the idea is that we have a choice. Human beings don't run on instinct. If you introduce an animal to an ecosystem that can't support it, the animal will go right ahead and destroy it. But as humans when we enter ecosystems that wouldn't support us if we were completely instinctual, we can restrain ourselves.

Not that I care about eating animals. I'm just saying, it's not a good argument to compare human beings to crocodiles. Unless crocs start writing poetry and playing StarCraft.

I'm pretty sure that's lions, when a new male takes control of a pride he often kills the offspring of the previous leader (for the reason you stated).

It was probably a good idea at the time, but now it might not be so painless anymore, I would still be rendered unconscious by an electrical shock, then killed, rather than having my throat slit and bleed to death.
It doesnt matter though, because people wont change their ways..pretty sad that we can be held back by some old book.

Did you even READ what yaqoob posted? The halal slaughter is by FAR the kindest to the animal.

So you can choose; A) Painless death, or B) Extreme pain followed by death.

Did you read what I said? I assumed there was a reason to why its against the law to not sedate the animal before its slaughtere in the hala way here in norway.

Hahah I remember the infamous "chicken & rice" line stretched down the entire block... while the halal stand right across the street had maybe one or two customers. It was so effing cold I was wondering if it was worth it.

But then I finally got my chicken & rice.

And it was sooo worth ittt. So good.

...I should go get some this week hehe.

Yay, a Halal cart blog ^_^. That stuff is seriously delicious.

I swear the white sauce is watered down mayonnaise with a little bit of seasoning for most carts, though I hear some use yogurt based sauces too. My evidence towards mayonnaise is that it must have quite a high fat content, because I saw this guy just douse it on a pita and used it to grill it up once.

I've tried the 53rd street one once, I thought it was tasty. But I can never objectively judge Halal because I always have it when i'm starving so it tastes delicious anywhere.

I do like Sammy's Halal where I can find it though (just around NYU so far) because they use basmati rice, which I just like better than normal long grain.

Also known as halal.

As its name implies, it's chicken, lamb, lettuce, and fried rice with white sauce + pita bread.

I didn't know Halal implied all of those things @_@

Its a muslim thing I think.

yes, they cut the throat open and let them bleed to death. You got to be a moron to support such a thing unless you're ignorant..

the most ignorant thing is a brainwashed swede talking about a different culture
stick to eating reindeer, moron

what's brainwashed aobut knowing that halal is a very cruel form of slaughtering. It's not like it doesn't exist in Sweden too..

So what? The animal dies either way.

I think it's HYPOCRISY to discuss details about how the animals are killed when you still eat your meat each day and many of these animals aren't being treated that well either. The entire meat industry is a bit sickening, so I dunno why you picked halal as your cause tbh.

Btw, the dish isn't called halal LOL.. The dish is like kebab/shish kebab or whatever

Jesus christ how the fuck are we supposed to know whether or not the dish is called "halal" or not?

If it says 'Halal' or has it written in Arabic (حلال) then you can kinda assume its just talking about the way it was slaughtered lol :D

As Caller posted above its usually called Chicken Sharwarma or something and you can get it as a sandwich or as a plate as you described. Its really tasty.

Its like going to a korean restaurant and assuming that the pork bone soup that they serve you is called "korean".

I love eating a korean. As the name implies, it is a soup with pork meat and soup, served with rice...

Then you could say, how the fuck should I know that korea is a country? If the restaurant says Kim'sKorean ... and you expect me to know that korea is a country somewhere?

Why so serious? Did I say, "I love eating a halal (singular)"? I love eating Halal can imply that I enjoy Halal style dishes - it makes sense, no need to call people retarded or ignorant. If someone says "I love Chinese", does that make them stupid because there's no dish called "A Chinese"? Most likely, they're referring to Chinese cooking in general. And halal is not just a method of slaughtering the meat, it is basically anything permissible under Islamic law; it is not limited to the preparation of food. Besides, in New York, Halal is the term used to describe the type of food that this thread is talking about.

Really? In the hierarchy of spicy, I usually don't include Middle Eastern and hotsauce is usually a joke. o.o

Strangely enough, I was talking about this halal cart guy with a couple of old high school buddies last night when we all got together for a reunion of sorts.

A couple of years ago, a guy we went to high school with (I was actually friends with him- we swapped video games all the time in science class) was stabbed over some argument about cutting in line or something. Apparently the cart has its own wikipedia page and it's mentioned as "the incident".

I've never tried it, but if it's good enough to murder someone over, maybe there's something to it?

Edit- In fact, here it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/53rd_and_6th

We got so many halal street vendors here in NYC.

yeah

The hotsauce they use isn't really that good. Rather than being tasty, it just burns your mouth.
I can handle it, but it ruins the entire meal =/

Its a muslim thing I think.

lol yeah it's great. I don't think I can eat more than twice a week though. Two is enough.
Then the next week you're craving it again. Repeat cycle. ^^
