Hi,
I want to get better at the frustrating game called sc. I want to type this out because 1: I want TL.net's opinions on my plan on getting better and 2. If I feel down, I want to to look at what I typed, and how everyone responded as a motivator. So this is how I am going to get better at starcraft.
1)Recognize that I am a newb - After a Year and 1/2 of trying to get better, off of 1-5 games a week, I am going to tell my self "I suck at this game, and I dont know ANYTHING!" I always used to tell myself after every loss "I have game sense" or "I can macro" or somethng, just cuz I read a guide or two. Now I am the type of person that applies abstract concepts to a whole lot of stuff. When I started to listen/watch top foreigners (note, not Korean pro-gamer FPVODS) FPVODS/podcasts, I was like "I vaguely know that, its ok". That is wrong. I have to know it like I know how to walk.
2) Pretend I never watched Combat-EX's videos - I am not kidding. They dont help. No this isnt an attempt to troll. When I was watching the live stream, I realized that I play like Combat (all the bad decisions, bad timing, not walling properly, poor micro/macro etc) alot. Like I tend to do tihings like the 12 gates 2base thing alot, and then never do anything about my gateway advatange, just like Combat. I always never liked Combat when I heard he abused, and then found proof (a replay of him abusing). To add to my nerdrage, he got mandhandled by Chill. I was glad Chill raped him...beacuse I realized I need to find a new style, and fast! So I guess I am one of his victims... I actually think this is one of my biggest problems, apart from my first point, because his "style" is a load of bs.
3) Play in my free time - I have a few builds written down, and now I am going to stop waisting my play time. After this im gonna play iCCup. I spend on time doing NOTHING on msn, or just hanging out in my friend's hamachi network. Sometimes, the person who always beats me asks for a game, and I say no..cuz I frankly I dont think its good if I play the same person everyday for hours, and always lose to the same strat (5 hatch hydra), especially after explaining point 2). My belief is that, If I play on iCCup, ill come across a whole bunch of situations. And if in my post game reflections I get stuck on something, I can play the opponent's race, try to execute the same strat the winner of my last game did, and see what my new opponent can do to beat it. Even if I win, I think I might find holes in it while I am executing it.
So, my plan in a jist:
1) Stop reading guides - iv read enough, im more of a practical person anyway 2) start playing alot 3) wash away all the sc dirt (aka combat, and other crap) out of my head. Ill find a way 4) eat healtier 5) go to the gym (i guess physical fitness helps in this game?)
So yeah, I want to know what you guys think. I also have a question:
1) How often should I do all-in tactics (like proxy gating)?
ty for reading this

If you watch combat-ex's vids no lie you can get to d!

your 5-step plan looks good. Getting raped repeatedly on ICCup always helps improve my game.
and if you're trying to improve, you rpobably don't want to work on all-in tactics. Though I'll tell you that bulldog can be really hard to stop as terran

However, whatever floats your boat. I prefer macro-oriented games. If you hate those kind of games, then you might as well.

I am sure you play better than me, lolz.

What I see alot is that people get to D+/C- just by doing all in builds and then they come to TL asking for advice saying something like "How do I improve, I'm C-" when really they are a low D level player when the play standard. I would suggest playing standard and if you really feel the need to cheese just make an alt account and practice cheesing there. I have heard that your micro will improve if you do all in builds alot because macro usually goes out the window, but I have never tried it.
You will also get very good at defending cheese if you play alot of iCCup because it feel like one out of ever three or four games your opponent is cheesing.

hmm, what happened to the realization that commentary was your thing? and i thought you quit sc...

only for ladder climbing IE if you are C level do it to get urself there , not beyond although it's up to you really i wouldn't do it at all, except for some fun?

Too true. This morning I played three D+ Protosses and they all went for 1 or 2 gate zeal + probe harass. Although it's not all that cheesy, it'll put you at a decisive disadvantage if you don't fend it off well. Pisses me off.

If you just use proper build orders, you should be able to get C- without even really microing/macroing.. something like 10/15 gate vs terran knocks out everyone earlygame, or ling-runby cannons.. I dont consider those cheese either (cheese is like 4pool, proxy rax/gates in back of your base)
SC is at a point where if you memorize the 'perfect' builds, using them under C, you can pretty much get so far ahead from that alone that as long as you dont make any incredibly stupid mistakes, you should be in a good position to win the game easily.

Good luck man, I know you probably always hear this, but you will get better in time. Your plan looks like it should work. GoGo Motivator power!

Don't get to devoted, it might not be worth it. Looking back I could've definitely done more if I played less so be careful!

BUT I dont have the will power to find some kind of fucked up solution to attempt to practice casting. Half the time, RWA doesnt work for me... I was trying to cast for a friendly tourney, and i had to resign cuz nothing was working . besides I was pretty down in the dumps back when I was saying that. Butty was reading my blod posts

Playing SC makes me want to punch people in the face. Sometimes. After getting cheesed 3 times in a row.

sometimes i get so happy.
this one game some tool cannon rushed me on Col 2 (ya know behind the mineral lines in tvp)
i had to move my whole base to my nat and i still won. IT WAS GREAT.

"I watched Combat-Ex videos and because of him I suck"...
seriously???.... geeezzzzzzz

Hey let's be honest, gym and eating right isn't gonna help you. There's only one golden way to get good at Starcraft:
- Play a lot & watch what you can do better after every game
To this you can add some guides / vods / replays but they won't help you unless you play and THINK. Nothing wrong with being healthy ofc but tbh Starcraft players aren't really the healthiest people overall.

be clever and likable and make friends with some players who are a lot better than you
back in the day i did this with nazgul (and then a bunch of other top foreigners) and it led to me getting sooo much better
