Was this something that started with StarCraft or did it start back in the Warcraft 2 Kali days? I'm pretty sure it started on the Kali server but my memory is fuzzy. I was like 12 at the time...

Anybody care to enlighten me?

So wait? I'm bad? =(

The "gl hf" pregame stuff definitely started back in War2. I remember typing "gl hf" over Kali.

I'm not sure about "gg" though, that might be a Starcraft thing.

Yup, before Bnet. It was quite a pain actually (or maybe it only seemed to be annoying because I was 10...). Blizzard released a War2 Bnet edition after Wc2:ToD anyways.

But concerning the OP... I don't think they were that old. I didn't play much on Kali, but I don't remember seeing those (not much help sorry^^ I can't remember much either...). Could this stuff have started with the WC2 Bnet edition? Or maybe it didn't even start on a blizzard game (C&C? RA?). Dunno

WarCraft 2 had no online capability other then directly connecting modem to modem. *WHICH WAS EXPENSIVE* Kali was created as an artificial LAN type thing. Think Hamachi. Only you had to pay to play on the Kali server. (I think? Again, my memory fails me.) Not to mention you had to pay your own phone bill. Hahaha.

That's why B.net was sooooooooo HUGE. OMG? Play SC online for free? It was a HUGE hook for me. (Not to mention I was already excited for it.) You still had to pay your own phone bill but by this time internet startup companies were all the rage and it was easy to abuse each company by using their 1 month free before moving on to another company. That's why so many companies failed was because they failed to have userbase that actually paid. Haha.
So wait? I'm bad? =(

I think I remember when playing Starcraft original back in 98-99 it was common to say just gg before the game started, and gl hf felt like an innovation when it later took over. Nowadays when I say gg before the game, pretty often the opponent will be upset like I'm trying to be arrogant and suggest the game is over before it started.

gg has been around since the first multiplayer online game essentially, I was using it way before SC.

i don't think gg was invented on kali though, my impression always was that it was from super early text based chess and go communities.
It's supposed to be automatic but actually you have to press this button.

Sweet thanks for that! I was a bit too young to remember any of these really early days. I just remember having epic LAN war2 games. Never played it online.

Are you talking about the origin completely, or simply the first use? I would expect the origin to date back to the Doom days.
I tried to commit seppuku, but I accidentally committed bukkake.

I think it got started when people wanted to type "good luck" "have fun" and "good game", but were too lazy to actually type it.

I can't say I know the origin but sometimes I'll even say GL HF PP OK? and totally confuse whoever I'm playing with.

SC was the first game I ever played online, so I don't know about any of that Kali stuff... But I remember THE question back then in 2000 was "asl?". EVERYONE asked it.

I have no idea why do people write gg before the game. I always thought it meant "good game" and is supposed to be written after the game actually happens. Koreans usually do it, so maybe it means something in Korean, or simply they don't know any English.

I've seen "2v2 newbies" few times on east, ah this brought back the memories. Nowadays everyone is so BM.
