Ok this has been annoying the hell out of me lately.
I forward all my e-Mail to my gmail account and use the webmail app to check and write mails. A few years ago google developed the gmail notifier, a small programm in the system tray that notifies me of new mail with a popup. The problem is that they stopped delevoping it so the notifier has zero features, which is fine because it does what it's supposed to do BUT there is no option to 'mark e-mail as read' which drives me crazy. Whenever I receive some spam mail I have to login to my google account and trash it or mark it as read so my gmail notifier stops telling me I have unread mail.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Is it so hard to add a 'mark as read' feature to the notifier? It can't be that hard because there are several notifiers for Linux that can do it, but I couldn't find one for Windows.
I'd appreciate any help, because this really annoys me. But please don't suggest to use an e-mail app like outlook or thunderbird, I want to stick with the gmail webmail because I really like it for various reasons.
People always tend to give out alternative solutions I bet you will get a few of em (I hate that so much)
There's a plug-in for firefox that's pretty used and known so I assume you discarded it for some reason, it does however have the feature you want (I think).

Hope you find something good! I would try not to bother about this problem due to google wave being developed
That addon has even less features than the google notifier hehe. I don't get a popup and there's no mark as read feature either. Also it being tied to the browser is ok but obviously worse than having it in the system tray.

It's not only about spam, let's say I get some unimportant e-mail from facebook telling me I was added or something. I see what the email is about because of the pop up in the system tray that shows the first few lines of the mail, but I still have to open gmail and mark it as read so my notifier shows me 'no new mails' again.
So many people use gmail but noone else seems to be annoyed by this T_T
i think majority of the people just bookmark it especially in the bookmark toolbar. i cycle through my bookmarks in the toolbar all the time and just check my mail from there. of course i'd have it remember my password
Move your IM'ing over to Pidgin and then use their notifiers. When you get a new email it lets you know and then doesn't tell you again until you turn the machine back on. Also report spam on the a lot of the stuff that's getting forwarded back at the old account, I thinking marking as spam on a forward will block all of the emails from the old account.
I filter it so that most regular emails that I don't find as important (facebook, mailing groups) are labeled and skip the inbox so they don't show up on the notifier. Not a perfect solution but can help.

just answering your question why no one seems to care.
Yeah, I'm actually quite annoyed by this too, I just am in the habit of jumping in there and deleting/archiving them on my own. I'm quite surprised myself they haven't updated it to some degree.
I'm also annoyed because the 'use gmail for mailto: links' option doesn't seem to work for me either. Have idea how to fix that?
Check out "Digsby". It's a IM client that has a notifier similar to gnotifier that supports hotmail, gmail, etc.. It has social network support too(facebook, myspace, etc..)
I use gmail notifier... I also never get spam, so it kinda sucks to be you. You can just hover your mouse over the system tray icon and see if the number has increased from last time you checked it...
I'm such a lonely person I get so excited when it goes "BEEBOOP!" and gives me a snippet of an email from my friend lol.
But yeah, use filters for stuff you don't care about. Hopefully you don't give your email out to too many sites that would likely sell it or 'accidentally' get it stolen. I don't get any spam on my personal email... Only me business one, and even then, the spam filter pretty much catches everything.
