i dunno dude, i don't really deal in Pavillion HPs. Apparently HP is starting to market the dv series as their premium consumer brand >.<, they now start to come with business warranties (this is in aus).
$1500 aus can fish you some pretty nice setups, core 2 should be no problem but like i said i don't really follow pavillions.

MAC is particularly good in the average user category (if you can put behind the price tag). their UI is unbelievably stable and the UNIX/BSD backend is secure and virus free.
Their softwares are well designed but at the same time you don't get the same customization options.
I recommend MAC to anyone who's got the cash and not too technical. The fundamentals behind their UI is much more useful compare to XP or Vista.

so what laptops can i get under 1500 that have a core 2 and 9600M? 2GB ram minimum. don't really care which brand (though i'd prefer mainstream over those like msi/asus).

Under 1500? asus or dell or acer... msy is still selling a dv5 with 9600GS (8600 rebranded) in qld...
Your best bet is from dell tbh.

i don't think i'd like shipping from qld. what dell should i get then? not really sure how their range goes. i'm suppose to order online right?

you can buy dells from officeworks, goodguys and harris tech
however, the ones in the store are prebundled without customization options.
If you don't want to get it delivered, pick a configuration from online and go to officeworks, they can order it for you. if the bastards cbfed, call their manager.
