My parents and I are getting my sister a new laptop for graduation so I was wondering if I could get TL's opinion of the laptop we're looking at:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9164012&st=a305&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1218040478391

Last time I was looking for laptops everyone told me that Toshiba was the way to go, correct me if that's no longer the case.

She'll mostly be using it for web browsing, maybe a little Counter Strike now and then. The only specific thing she really wanted was VGA out so she can hook it up to larger monitors/TVs to watch movies which her current laptop lacks. Also, not sure how I feel about the fact that this laptop has a shiny plastic surface so fingerprints show up really really easily. Minor issue though I suppose.

Nothing too fancy. If TL doesn't think there are any glaring reasons why this laptop would be a poor choice, I'll go ahead and pick it up. Thanks TL!

For the specs its got, its a very good deal (only $600). From reading the customer reviews, the only problem seems to be hardware defects, which should be covered by your warranty anyway. The only thing I would consider is the fact that Windows 7 is coming out soon (nov 09 i think?) and your sister might wanna wait a little longer to offset the cost of upgrading then.

I never heard before that Toshiba is the way to go. I dislike Toshiba laptops. They overuse gloss in all parts of the laptop and they are heavy when you compare their laptops to the same class of laptops.

Lenovo is the way to go.

I can't see how that laptop is a good deal at $600 at all.
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=1338625
This $350 Toshiba laptop is very similar to the $600 one. It has 2gb of ram instead of 3gb, but a 4gb set of ram costs 20 dollars these days.

I had more then 3 friends with toshiba satellite laptops that were bought before 2006 and they all worked well. The gloss is just for shine and nothing better but the actual laptop was worth the money. Out of those 3 friends one friend that was a marine had bought a satellite while he was stationed in south korea for the amount of $1.2k. This laptop would suit her well.

Toshiba laptops are usually very great value. Decent price $500 or less can get you a pretty decent machine

Brands like Lenovo (Chinese brand, I never trust chinese brands), E-Machine, Gateway might be a tad cheaper for better specs but who cares? I would rather pay a bit more for a laptop that won't fail on me

Lenovo non-thinkpads do suck. But TOP is talking about thinkpads, in which case are not cheap shit. In fact, it is way better than toshiba lol.

Seems like a pretty good deal, you could definitely do worse in laptop selection. Just be careful with Vista of course. XD That's a pretty beast hard drive, and everything else seems decent. I have a shiny Gateway laptop and it does get marked pretty easily, but it is very easy to wipe clean. For her purposes, i think it's perfectly adequate.

keep an eye out on slickdeals.net or search around on there, they usually have some kickass deals on laptops there.

Toshiba are generally good machines (except the ones they ship to China...)

I would definately buy them given the choice of toshi vs dell vs etc...

Thinkpads are business laptops with better warranty and generally have some pretty good value accessories.

Watch out tho, cheap lappies usually suck in terms of support and assessories. When that battery or charge go out, all the saving you recieved up front are gone.

Legend of thinkpads

I don't recommend lenovo for girls tho, they are more of a business/programmer favored product.

When I started school sep 08 i bought an LG for 900$ that I thought would serve me well.. My best friend in my class has a 650$ Lenovo.

I wouldn't trade mine for his BUT if I could return my computer I would and then get his.. It's never warm, not one bit warm.. The touchpad is amazing and the extra I have in muscle hardly ever shows

It's not just counterstrike, we just prefer PCs. It's what we're used to, it's what I know how to generally trouble shoot. And they're generally cheaper.

As for waiting, it's a graduation present and she's graduating the 16th of this month, roughly 1 week from now.

Thanks guys, I'll probably go pick it up now.

i'd just tell her you're getting her one and wait, you'll probably get a much better deal as centrino 2 becomes more main stream.

and GTR, dv5 with 9600s and centrino 2 have been way under 1500 for a long time...at least in america. i think i saw one for 1300 - 400$ coupon for 900$ last december ~~

I know, I reasoned the same way before I bought my MacBook three years ago but the main difference between the OS:s is that you very seldom even have to trouble shoot. If Micro$oft doesn´t deliever a better OS with Windows 7 there is no way I will switch back. I have a stationary pc with XP and is frustatrates the hell out of me with finding files (the search function is just so bad), setting up networks, the constant warnings from antivirus/firewall and the 25 system functions and programs running at the same time in the background slowing it down - eventhough I trimmed the autostart and by ctrl-alt-delete forced quit the rest. I also built the computer myself.

Apple had their best quarter ever Q209 and stated from the conference Tim Cook (COO) said "We're about making the best computers in the world, not the most." - http://blog.laptopmag.com/dubious-findings-macbooks-sweep-consumer-reports-laptop-rankings

i dunno dude, i don't really deal in Pavillion HPs.
Apparently HP is starting to market the dv series as their premium consumer brand >.<, they now start to come with business warranties (this is in aus).

$1500 aus can fish you some pretty nice setups, core 2 should be no problem but like i said i don't really follow pavillions.

MAC is particularly good in the average user category (if you can put behind the price tag).
their UI is unbelievably stable and the UNIX/BSD backend is secure and virus free.

Their softwares are well designed but at the same time you don't get the same customization options.

I recommend MAC to anyone who's got the cash and not too technical. The fundamentals behind their UI is much more useful compare to XP or Vista.

so what laptops can i get under 1500 that have a core 2 and 9600M? 2GB ram minimum.
don't really care which brand (though i'd prefer mainstream over those like msi/asus).

Under 1500? asus or dell or acer...
msy is still selling a dv5 with 9600GS (8600 rebranded) in qld...

Your best bet is from dell tbh.

you can buy dells from officeworks, goodguys and harris tech

however, the ones in the store are prebundled without customization options.

If you don't want to get it delivered, pick a configuration from online and go to officeworks, they can order it for you. if the bastards cbfed, call their manager.
