Japan is pretty weird; it'll be fun. Don't really expect too much in the form of converting or anything; Japan is a pretty "atheistic" nation despite what numerous cultural superstitions and etc., and although they do have a fairly devoted Christian populace, it's fairly small.

You get assigned before you even know the language? Man that might be quite a hurdle, how are you going to spread the word when you can barely speak japanese? It's tough as hell, will take you at least a year of studies before you get decent.
Totally envying you anyway, wish I could go to Japan :/

Congratulations, best of luck in Japan!

Good luck, have fun! Sounds like fun. I've always wanted to go on a mission. ;\

I will be able to call my family during holidays I think, like thanksgiving and christmas.
Cellphones I think are handed out but I will probably be busy with laboring in the mission field. Calling investigators.
Well, I will learn the language in the MTC. And I will be handed out books and such. I will probably actually LEARN LEARN it in the field, which will be like a few months after being in the mtc. My brothers have served in Arizona Canada Brazil Germany. My dad served in Tokyo. He forgot most of it, but he can still say a few things.
I picked up japanese pretty well the first few times I studied it, its something I've always wanted to know. So I think that if I am diligent in my studies, I will learn it and speak it fluently.
There will be trials and challenges, but I am fully aware of it. I have my shots, I still need a few dental things done.
I will have to put my life basically on hold for 2 years, but it will be very helpful in the years to come. I will be with a missionary companion 24/7, cept bathroom. haha. I've heard that the 2 years you spend on the mission will prepare you for the next 40, or...20 I guess that makes the analogy work, but its a preparation for life.
Oh yeah, internet relations generally suck, I would know. But good if that all works out with that guy.
Missions are ALL over the world, the LDS church that is. I would say the only places the church isnt at is Like China(has a temple in hong kong though) and Afganistan I think. maybe a few others. Thats because of either war or diplomatic things. But it is a worldwide church.
I probably will be able to email, I know my brother Mitch was allowed too, things have changed as far as technology and understanding of it. I already have my close friends emails at hand so I can write them. its cheaper so its better.
Thank you all for the nice comments.
lds.org and mormon.org in case you are interested in just looking at our beliefs.

I have been considering joining the peace corps after I finish college. I know one guy IRL that loved his experience in Thailand. But I have also read of others experiences in blogs in the internet, both good and bad. Regardless it would be a great experience. Enjoy your time in Japan.

Word. I'll send my papers in in a year.
You can call home on mother's day and Christmas.
