So do you all like milk? I've been drinking lots of milk recently, hoping to grow a couple of inches but I'm not sure if it actually helps. What other things should I do to get taller?

you only grow less if you are malnutritioned. Don't go chugging milk by the gallons because you think 1 gallon= .1 in.

Jordan said that he used to hang from the rim regularly in an attempt to make himself taller. He's by far the tallest member of his family.

we had a thread about this a couple months ago I think.

and yeah I like milk with cereal and i love chocolate milk. however i shouldn't drink dairy cuz my body is gay. but I do sometimes anyways

Oh, hmm I can't touch rim but that would be my dream! So I guess other jumping exercises could help? And I looked for a thread but couldn't find it.

Milk is delicious, you should drink it whether or not you want to grow taller.

Why exactly do you see your height as a problem? I think it'd be better for you to learn to be comfortable in your own skin than to alter it.

I have no medical background, but I'd say it's likely if you do anything like extreme stretching to make yourself taller, you'll be weakening your bones at the same time.

Oh god not milk + height again.. haha

I love milk, and it's the only thing I drink other than water (unless I'm out drinking alcoholic beverages), if milk made you taller I'd be 7 ft.

Milk is awesome.

EDIT: From the previous thread:

Milk is no more important than other food with nutrients. Unless you severely neglect your diet, nutrition shouldnt really impact your height.

When you play something like basketball, you're constantly jumping and therefore stretching your spine and knees. Doing so causes your body to grow around these places. Read about this somewhere a while ago but cba to find source. There are many people that have grown 2-3 inches over the course of 1-2 years simply by stretching their spine ~10min a day.

i believe that Bruce Lee hung himself from a tree with weights on his legs, daily, so that he could grow two inches taller. If you have the strength and determination to do that for several years, i'm sure you'll cause some permanent ligament stretching!

I like whole milk. 2% is meh, it's ok, don't like skim. Not really drinking it for anything but taste, except maybe having a bit more variance in what I drink.

I used to hate milk, and went years without drinking any milk. but now that i've been trying to bulk up I started to force myself to drink it. I probally drink 4 cups of whole milk per day and i love it. acquired taste ^^. Also i can only drink whole milk everything else (2% reduced fat etc) is jus nasty.

but about drinking it to grow taller...i dont think so..

I don't drink milk for the benefits, I drink it because I love the taste.

I'm sure I'm not alone here.

That said, if people legitimately believe drinking milk will make you gain inches of height...

How tall you grow is mainly a question of your genes. I take it you're not malnutritioned, so there's actually not much you can do. Get enough sleep (7+ h/night) and eat healthy, that's all you can do. Also, at your age you might have some growth spurts coming, so don't despair. What heritage do you have? Asian?

Milk is a great source of calcium. At about the age of 25, your body reaches it's peak bone density. You want to make sure that your bones are as nice and dense and have a great source of calcium, because as a general rule, your bones will be wearing away for the rest of your life. Making sure you get plenty of calcium (about 1000mg per day) and doing exercise will promote the growth of strong bones. Strong bones now mean when you are older, you will still have relatively strong bones and the likelyhood of you falling over and breaking your hip when your older will decrease.

You should be aiming for about 3-4 serves of dairy per day to get ure calcium requirements.
250mls of milk is about 1 serve.

On April 17 2009 13:47 FragKrag wrote:

The calcium in spinach is very difficult for your body to absorb. You therefore need to eat about 1kg of spinach to equal the calcium of 250mls of milk. So about 3-4kgs of spinach each day will give you your daily calcium requirements . Personally i'd go with the milk.

Any day, milk, any day,

this

also it's been proven that milk doesn't make u grow more u just grow less than u should w/o it (due to the lack of calcium)

but since milk has so much crap in it, u really do not want to know, i say go for the oj w/ calcium + vitamin D fortification

milk is fvcking horrible for you. its designed to make a baby cow into a whopping fatass 400+ lbs cow in 1 year. any place at all that tells you milk is good for you is, infact, either ignorant, or propaganda. milk doesn't even have good levels of nutrients in it. they are mostly added to it afterwards. go drink something thats good for you please.

I do hope you are joking.

Yes milk has a decent level of fat content, which is why you should go for the low-fat stuff if your worried about weight gain. But dairy still remains one of the most easily accessible sources of calcium there is.

the only reason milk is easily accessible for calcium is because so much calcium is added to it. milk is horrible for you. HORRIBLE for you. get your calcium from somewhere else.

Ok, where do you propose getting your calcium from? On an average day, where do you get it?

Eat well, exercise, get enough sleep, etc etc

Basically, stay healthy and you'll grow to your maximum potential

Thank you Wiki!

"These include seaweeds such as kelp, wakame and hijiki; nuts and seeds (like almonds and sesame); blackstrap molasses; beans; oranges; figs; quinoa; amaranth; collard greens; okra; rutabaga; broccoli; dandelion leaves; kale; and fortified products such as orange juice and soy milk. (However, calcium fortified orange juice often contains vitamin D3 derived from lanolin, and is thus unacceptable for vegans.) An overlooked source of calcium is eggshell, which can be ground into a powder and mixed into food or a glass of water. Cultivated vegetables generally have less calcium than wild plants.

The calcium content of most foods can be found in the USDA National Nutrient Database."

Don't shut something down just because you don't like to hear it. Humans are the only beings that drink the milk of another animal, shouldn't that say anything? Plus we're the only ones to drink milk past infancy. We don't need milk -_-

I didnt shut something down because I didnt like to hear it. I asked where he gets his calcium from. A simple question, because I want to debate this topic seeing as Ive studied it.

I know fully well that milk isnt the only source of calcium, I didnt even need to wikipedia it to find out. Im arguing that milk is a very good source of calcium, and not something you should remove from your diet because its fattening.

Most people do not get enough calcium in their diet (that includes most people who do drink milk). While it doesnt affect them too much in early life unless they are seriously deficient, later on, as your bone density drops, you will be much more likely to break bones which has a habit of leading to complications that cause death.

Lets look at your list.
Seaweeds - yes, high in calcium, However to get your 1000mg per day, thats about 600 grams of seaweed.
Nuts - yes, high in calcium, 400grams of nuts per day for your calcium needs
Leafy vegetables - relatively high in calcium, but it is very hard for the body to absorb. A cup of brocolli might provide 30mg of calcium (33 cups of broccoli anyone?)
Fortified OJ - Contains about 80mg per 100mls. 1.25L per day for ure calcium needs.

Sure, milk isnt the only source of calcium, no-ones debating that but you. What Im debating is that milk is the most available source of calcium and is one of the best ways to get your daily calcium needs. Because I dont see too many people eating 600grams of seaweed each day.

Anti milk conspiracies. Milk is from genetically modified cows injected with growth hormones, and beyond the issues with that, people argue that it's horrible for nutrition and and also contains caseine (sic) which is like glue and is actually the main ingredient in glue and other things. And then there is the lactose thing, humans aren't good at digesting it and causes build up or some problems or something. Which is why there are also a lot of lactose intolerant people. Plus why do we need milk anyways? Water and a vitamin would be 100x better for you.

Only reason I use milk is for cooking and cereal. Or a shot to coat my stomache on a hangover.

PS- I drink 1% milk
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

I'm the shortest male in my extended family that didn't grow up in guangdong/hong konf\g eating 2 bowls of rice a day.

And I probably had the most milk out of any of them.

I'm 6'4". I don't think you Asians can help it. In my opinion, a good diet will help you grow taller but there's a maximum height you are limited to by your genes.

Whats so bad about milk I have yet to see any credible sources about this.

And what's so great about being tall anyway you live shorter, you can't sit normally anywhere on the train when it's crowded and you have to eat a shitload more.

may be true, but I've seen 6'3-5ish Asians around the university I live by. Maybe they're just freaks to begin with, but I've noticed a lot of 2nd generation spanish/asian kids being generally and significantly taller than their parents and melding into the white/black hierarchies.

not the milk itself, but by the way most farmers seem to cultivate it

excerpt from "The corporation" a documentary movie.

ACTUALLY this might just be for USA only.

I don't know if any of those are facts but I do eat a lot. As a disadvantage, it's probably more expensive in the long run. However, I really enjoy eating so I think being able to eat more is an advantage in that way.
