Qwerty
I changed all abilities to W E R, Q as patrol
everything else now has a grid layout
Did it mainly because I wanted to switch from P to T and eventually to Z and I found it too annoying as a beginner to learn the hotkeys for every unit and building and every game I played just became painful instead of fun and I could no longer macro with any efficiency so I figured having universal hotkeys for all 3 races would make it easier and I could play at a higher level without having to spend hours learning all the hotkeys
and I'm having fun again
What Nony said pretty much applies to me

this has been spoken about a few times. the general consensus has been yes its cheating.

Hungarian is qwertz and also the numbers are 0123..89 instead of 123...890 I started using English keyboard just to adjust to it
I thought I was the only hungarian that used the English layout, damn you ![](/mirror/smilies/frown.gif)
My father's old laptop couldn't handle QWERTZ (actually the hungarian letters but w/e), and because I started playing SC on that, I learned hotkeys on the English layout. For Protoss, the Z would be much more convenient there... (sucks for zerg players though).
I actually like that I have control group 0 next to the 9 button, instead of having it next to 1. That'd be bothersome.

Absolutely fine with me if people do it. You can achieve a similar effect by remapping keyboard anyway.

but sc2 will probably have built-in remappable hotkeys so if you're playing BW in anticipation of SC2, i'd say stick to it
Seeing as you're the only big-name gamer in here, care to elaborate on why you think it's unfair??

If it's going to be in SC2, and you aren't a top player right now just awaiting SC2, go for it. Basically all that NonY said.
As for in competition situations - I'll use myself for an example (ignore how bad I am momentarily). I play T. Usually I hotkey 1 to my CC and 2-3 my early rax. Right now I stretch my hand so my ring finger is on 2 and my thumb is on m. Imagine I could remap the keys so that I had "w" as my marine hotkey. So much easier no? Stuff like that.

it's cheating. i used to do it and i was wrong.

people who say this is cheating are fucking stupid. It's not like I setup my keys to do multiple functions at once.
Like people said some keyboards are inherently different than yours, who's to say who has the original 'real' non cheating setup in the first place.
Some of these keyboards take extra commands to do the same thing on a regular qwerty keyboard.
Warcraft 3 has a built in key changer. You can change ANY hotkey in the game, spell level upgrades, units, buildings, etc.
Sc2 will also have this support.
Lets look at some other games, Streetfighter has always allowed button mapping, FPS's all allow it, Hell 95% of all games allow it.
So how is it cheating at all? It's no more cheating than using chaos launcher imo.
People are just butthurt and lazy that they learned the crappy blizzard hotkeys and realize now that it would be more efficient to customize them but don't want to be bothered.
PS- There is a drawback to mapping so many hotkeys, you get used to them and when you go anywhere else you're gonna have to map them all out everytime (or might not even be able to).

I'm not sure why you would go through the lengths of writing such a long post and then starting it that way...

There are >100 keyboardlayouts coming with windows, and MS allows you to create your own too. Additionally each localization of SC has it's own hotkeys which depending on race can be better than the english ones. I'm all for allowing people to change their kb layout regardless of competition. But I think it's stupid to have that conversation over and over. We have never reached a general consensus, and we won't until SC2 which surely will have custom keys and probably use a hotkey layout which maps to the buttons by default.

Hi, sorry to bump such an old thread, but I would also like to remap some of my hotkeys and I read Piano's guide and can't figure out how to change them. Anyone mind helping a fellow noob out? xD
