Someone previously mentioned that some people still play Starcraft on the shareware. This got me curious so I downloaded, and installed the demo.
I was surprised that there are still like 10-15 people that still play Shareware. It seems like they are a tight nit community.
If you are curious, check this out? http://sware.weebly.com/
I don't know but , I feel pretty sad about it. I wish I had CD keys to give to these guys.

lol... I remember playing the shareware once. You can only pick T and play on one map, and it's on 1.08 so the costs of a bunch of things are different. Funny that people are still on that.
|
I played shareware for a year before buying BW lol
Shareware is actually on 1.01. There are so many bugs at that can be exploited (but considered cheating) such as CC sliding and flying scv that are pretty funny.
There have been many mods and hacks made for shareware so that you can play other maps, including UMS, and even as zerg.

lol you guys miss one of the main reasons for shareware people I think. I played shareware for a little while a few years back, they have some of the most INSANE mods on there. I can't even remember them all, but its basically like UMS on crack half the time. Marines that can fly, hydras that shoot reaver shots with tank range, its hilarious. It makes you wonder what boxer would do with those units.
They actually made a crazy mod that literally creates the entire Zerg race from what I am guessing is a completely modded Terran race or something? I remember it being funny because they couldn't mod the overlord movement properly so the ovies would twitch move instead of hover move, pretty entertaining. but yeah, it is a small interesting community :D
I think the modding is more dominant there because the creators of the software have free reign, Blizzard moderates that very little, hence why its 1.08, so they never have to patch their software and can keep making even more badass fixes. I wonder if they made the Protoss race modded yet? Been a few years, probably have it by now :D
With that said, ANYONE WANT TO PLAY SOME MODCRAFT?
|
lol. I lost my original, so i downloaded sc. They should get a pirated version of sc and play on iccup (at least). Works fine for me. hard to get on b.net though.

the plot twist is when instead of being introduced into society he rejects humanity and lives out his days in his cave

Yes finally a place to practice TvT hardcore. No TvT dodging freaks over there.
|
dude i watched some of those national geographic youtube videos they had on that and they were incredibly interesting.
I didn't know they did such extensive testing on progamers attributing to brain function and whatnot.
|
I love that WCG special. I have the whole thing in a .wmv somewhere on my comp.
|
I used to play shareware for the mods. Zerg was completely available with a mod, and there were crazy things like Long Range Mod where static defense and tanks had infinite range, and everything else had its range doubled.
|
Two years ago I decided not to bring starcraft to school (freshman year).. about halfway through I discovered the shareware demo, so I downloaded it. Theres actually an intro campaign mission that doesn't appear in the real game..
As far as multiplayer goes, you could only play terran on one blizzard map (a truly horrible map too, not even lost temple or hunters).. and if you downloaded some sort of hack you could play BGH and zerg, but if anyone joined the game without the hack the whole thing would crash..
Theres really no good reason to play this instead of the real one. I mean honestly what the fuck are these guys still doing... If they can afford internet they can afford $10 to buy the game

it'd be perfect for artosis, there's no P!

The only game I have on my computer is StarCraft Shareware; I think the game is a lot of fun because there's a program called UltimatePatch that lets you play different maps.
The people on Shareware only play Byway, the default 2 player map included with the demo, or Badlands Big Game Hunters, which is basically BGH converted to the Badlands terrain.
The patch also lets you play as Zerg, but it's a bit unbalanced in ZvT because by default the spawning pool only costs 150. There is a mod in UltimatePatch that modifies the races a little bit to make things more balanced.
Here are some differences between Shareware and normal SC:
1. Goliaths do 8 damage against ground units. 2. Science vessel costs 25m 300g vs. 100m 225g. 3. A scan costs 75 energy. 4. Wraiths do only 15 air damage. 5. Dropships are really slow. 6. Starport costs 200m 100g.
I enjoy playing Shareware because it's simple. There are only two maps, and everyone pretty much knows each other. Because I don't have Brood Wars, I only really know how to play TvT, so that is my favorite and (in my opinion) most exciting matchup to watch between progamers.
Here's a screenshot of Ultimate Patch for those who are curious, and another screenshot of the Shareware Lobby. There are only one or two games that are available for joining at any time. Sometimes it's completely empty. There's a guy on Shareware named lcpjk-julyeta who has over 8000 wins--all from the default Shareware map. Don't ask me why, because I don't know; I can't read his Korean chat. I'm almost 100% positive he's legit too. He's always playing. You guys should come on Shareware and see if you can beat him. He's really good!
This is Ultimate Patch:
This is lcpjk-julyeta's stats, and yes they're all from the default Byway map:
This is an example of what you will see when you try to join a game:
For those of you who may be curious, this is what the default Byway map looks like for TvT:

Haha, there has to be something wrong with them if they would rather play shareware all these years. Money obviously isn't an issue. I'm sure anyone can afford the $10 price tag.
|
you can download starcraft from the iccup's site for free
|
Wow, this is really interesting to me, actually. Thanks for the rundown, Shengster. Seems like a really neat little community, even if it doesn't really make much sense, haha. Someone needs to go interview the 8000+ win guy, hahahhaha.

what was the difference between shareware and the demo? could you actually 'buy' the game online since it was 'shareware'?

It's basically the same thing.

There are various mods that you can choose. The most popular one is $4n, or "Money 4 Nothing" where all buildings/units are free, and you try to kill your opponent as soon as possible.
There's a Wack Patch (pretty terrible in my opinion) that changes the weapons of units, i.e. Siege Tank attacks with the Sunken Colony Spine. Maybe that's what you're referring to.
You can play Zerg, but you have to turn Unit Acknowledgement/Building Acknowledgement Sounds off because there aren't any sound files in Shareware for them, otherwise your game crashes.

Shareware is actually quite fun. It's basically TvT on two different maps. Occasionally on weekends we'll have enough people for 3v3 or 4v4 BGH which can be pretty exciting. Games on BGH usually turn into massive wraith battles, since dropships are slow, there isn't goliath range, and scanner costs 75 energy.

So why exactly would it be impossible to use the same mods in regular StarCraft?
Do not get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with people still playing demos. You can still find multiplayer games with the WC3 and World in Conflict demos. However, whatever the shareware version is capable of, I fail to see why the regular version would not be capable of it and better. Plus, you can get it for as low as 4,5 Euros (6 Dollars) nowadays.
|
i used to play shareware, i had the full game too, i have no idea why i did it, it was a long time ago, i had that bgh thing and everything, dont remember the mods part though

heheh, in few years sc2 players will write things like this for BW players :p
someone said 8000 + guy should be interviewed.. yes, please someone do it
|
good shareware days. that sure brings back memories.
|
On one hand I pitty this community soley based on their option to limit their gameplay experience...However, on the other hand I can respect they've been playing TvT on 2 maps for...10+ years?
awsome
|
I wonder if there will be an SC2 demo community as well. Probably depends on what goodies the demo will have.
|
All the naysayers don't know about the tight knit SW community. I've been gaming with some of these dudes for over 10yrs.
And to all those who say "Buy BW it's only $10...etc", most of us had BW, and still came back to SW. It's all about the community, the same guys who played this over the years, and kept coming back for more.
|
Hi guys! I was just reminiscing and thought about searching TL and here it is, a SW (shareware) thread!
Those were the good old days I miss.
Spent 6 hours + on that demo, creating clans, tournaments, chatting n just having fun.
If you guys don't believe me, you can check my clan members list: http://www.angelfire.com/scary/swkclan/members.htm http://www.angelfire.com/scary/swkclan/index2.htm (ignore the serious news updates lol)
Yesss that many people played SW, that's only one out of many dozens of clans.
Shout out to anyone who remembers me. If your out there reading this, HOLLA!
ps: I do play SC2 from time to time. Right now on SW, 1hr... nobody to be seen

I play UMS only, on the days I do play - it varies with the time of day, weekends are better, kept my account alive, all these years.
Wow, StarCraft Demo... I remember downloading that on my old 33.6 modem, it took 8 hrs overnight on dialup, back when Napster was all the rage. About to drop another blast from the past.
I'm so happy to see some of you are still around and playing. I'm Z-Bahamut / MaGNuS]SwK[. I used to play with Jesse(roseart) , Z-marines , Z-sinister , newbieshizzz, blues.exe , shala, omnipresent, kursed, liminality, Eric(goliath), leetz and likemy
I'm sure there's a ton more, however thats what i got off the top of my head. Wasn't as old school as some of you or even close to the same skill level BUT the chat and just learning how to play from some of you was GREAT.
ps: i want to be a teenager and just play sware and push F11 all day again. memories.

I've been feeling nostalgic about my old SC days and came across this forum. Epic. So glad there's still some people who remember scsw! I'll try to remember some ov my names:
~`v^~~`v^~~`v^~~`v^~ -=W@R=- [insert clan tag i can't remember here] - JuVeNiLe [PHI]-SoCraTes [dA]-Blitzkrieg - this one was around 300-0-1, something over 300 wins, no losses, one disconnect :/ i remember being so fucking choked when it happened
I used to play 2v2s with a guy named Chino-XL, remember playing with Liquid`Nazgul a few times back then too, so many others I wish i could remember
u guys remember ploader? also the badlands game hunters wasnt BGH, because it had the regular Hunters mineral patches, not the nearly unlimited ones like BGH.
|
ioNoWat2PuT here.. had some of the best memories of my childhood here. I just got out of the Marine Corps and it reminded me of this chapter of my life.. 26 now and I remember playing this as a 13 year old. miss these days! How is everybody doing?!
|
Dumb bump but maybe there are still ppl who used to play there. Me with me friend tried to play on Battle.net since you can't play against AI but when he logs in he can't join or create games, those buttons are grayed out. But he can play on other servers without problem, what can be the issue and is there a way to solve it?
