I need to write a paper about the portrayal of family, femininity and masulinity in Japanese Dramas. My professor wants me to compare two dramas of my choice.
I already picked the first drama, "Last Friends", which is perfect because it deals with problems like domestic violence, pregnancy, homosexuality, alternative lifestyle, flatsharing (in contrast to living with family) and other stuff.
So now I'm looking for a drama that has a similar theme. It should be newer than 1997 and deal with young people (20-35) struggling with love, work, family, friendship (does not need to be about homosexuality or domestic violence). The drama should be serious and have decent ratings.
I would appreciate recommendations!

The one drama series I watched, based off of an anime I believe, had those themes, although I'm not sure if it is central to the themes you're looking for. The series is called Honey and Clover, which you may or may not already have heard of, but the protagonist and many of the main characters go through many struggles which contain:
- Love: how characters must deal with love triangles that become resolved in the end in one way or another. - Friendship: Characters seem to really emphasize the important of friendship between one another, and are often seen sacrificing their own wants/desires to help the other. - Path they choose in life: Struggles involving figuring out what it is they want to do and how they'll do it, given their circumstances including those from the points mentioned above. They mostly have to do with art or liberal arts type of fields (art school, figures huh?); thus, emotions will have a huge impact on everything they do.
You should check out at least the exerpts of these drama episodes as found on veoh. I believe you need the veoh player to watch the full drama episodes, but I'm not sure since I watched it about a year or so ago. If you want, I can find out that information for you, but I hope this helped!

drama wiki is down right now for me, but look up "Oh Dad!" aka Oyaji
It will suit your theme perfectly, a very good series too. It's a family drama about a family of 5 with the children ranging from 18-30, dealing with various modern day life problems with their overbearing and old fashioned dad. It takes place in around 2001. crunchyroll used to have it on stream too, but now they have no fan-uploads.
