Choosing University in US for foreign student?

I am currently at high school in my country. Grade 11 now and trying my best to graduate early right now. If I am lucky, I will graduate this year.

I already got my toefl score already (96 total, my speaking score sucks). I don't think I will take SAT (too busy now).
My GPA is around 3.8 .

My teacher recommended me Portland State University and University of Montana. I would like to study for biology or chemistry or health sciences degree or maybe a psychology degree. After undergraduate, I would like to study medical, if I can make it.

Which universities should I choose? Any other suggestions are welcome too.

Thanks in advance.

you need to let us know what you are looking for in a university.

i'm talking about stuff like:
size of school
location (both location in the US, and urban vs suburban etc)
how much $$ you have available
etc

also, i'm not quite sure how international admissions works but i'm pretty sure it's a good idea to take the SAT.

also out of curiosity, where are you from?

University of Montana-
"You must meet the following admission requirements in addition to completing the international application procedures:

* An English language proficiency score showing one of the following:
o 61 iBT (173CBT/500PBT) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
o 5.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
o 69 on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB); or
o 440 on the SAT Writing Section; or
o 18 on the Combined English/Writing section of the ACT
* A minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for freshman applicants or a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale for transfer applicants. The admissions office will determine grade point average if one is not available on a student's academic record.
* A statement of financial support that verifies that $ 25,563 will be available to you to cover estimated costs for the academic year.

You just need one of those, and he already took TOEFL and his score is wayyy past the requirement so meh.

I would like to study for biology or chemistry or health sciences degree or maybe a psychology degree. After undergraduate, I would like to study medical, if I can make it.

It would be in your best interest to pick either biochem/ psychology / or medical ; because most universities have different programs and one college may not have... psychology and just be focused on chemistry.
Although, I'm graduating this year and I'm STILL fairly uncertain what i'm going to major in so meh.

Well, I am from Vietnam :D. My toefl ibt sure passes many requirements but I think I also lose many chances without the SAT. But I can do nothing more because this year I am really busy with paper to get extra credits for early graduation.

About location, I think I would prefer west coast because my relatives live there (Seattle). But I wouldn't mind to study in the east coast if the tuition fee there is lower. Urban or suburban is ok to me as long as there is good education.

I prefer universities where the total cost (housing, meal, tuition,...) is less than $33.000.

About school size, I don't think I care much about this but I think not too small is ok to me.

ok if you're thinking about less than $33,000 unfortunately there aren't too many options.

i'm assuming you know the difference between public and private schools.

so with the vast majority of private schools they cost of attendance is $40,000+, so i guess those are out of the picture. of course, if you receive some sort of merit-based scholarship or something then you're good to go.

out of the public schools, the ones i can think of off-hand would be:
university of washington (very good choice)
western washington university
portland state university
university of oregon
oregon state university
various Cal States (CSU's)

UC's would obviously be a good option too, but their out-of-state tuition is really expensive. i think it is over $35,000 a year but you might want to check on that.

How prevalent are need based scholarships at Public schools?

I'm so spoiled having gone to a place with basically fully need based aid

There are no need-based scholarships at Public schools for internationals afaik.

Although my friend haxxed and got one from UCSD, he went to a generous private one anyway.

Man, gl with your research. Good you're doing it now, don't put it to last minute like me. How do you measure your chances of getting a scholarship?

edit: @down: he'll have more time to study for SATs, obviously! (j/k)

why are you so eager to graduate early? high school can't be that horrible... find time to take the SAT, it opens a lot more options for you.

My chance for Portland State University might be 25%-30% or a little bit higher because last year my school got three scholarships for Portland State University. And well, I am sure that I can get a scholarship at Central Washington University because my high school and CWU are affiliate but there is not many good reviews about CWU.

I know that but if I would only have like 0.5< English credits left to finish after this summer. I think 0.5 credits for the whole Fall quarter of next year is kind of like a waste of time. So I try to finish it this year with some projects. And well, my school is not really bad though but wasting money for one more quarter is not really a good idea for me.

In my country, we have to pay to study in high school. And my school tuition fee is unusually high.

There are so many universities but, as a foreigner, I would suggest attending a school near / in a major city. There are a lot of universities of all levels in isolated, desolate places; as long as you're studying in a new country, you should be close to a culturally dense area.

San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Washington DC are examples, but there are many more.

Also, if you find yourself at a dead end regarding admission/acceptance into schools you want, consider looking into the community college system for an alternate route.

i highly doubt that
with a 3.8 gpa ;o
however, community college IS a lot cheaper ( from what i've heard )

(to OP)Hey, I'm vietnamese too! xD
and sorry i don't really know many colleges for chem or psycology;
however i know lots of business/engineering and comp sci colleges o_o'
what field of chemistry are you thinking of? e-chem , o-chem, etc.

I think o-chem :D and well, I do have the option of going to Seattle Central Community College because it is cheaper.

Too bad that I am not really fond of business or comp sci. But anyways, nice to see another Vietnamese :D.

tbh, my GPA would be 4.0 if I didn't choose Chinese as a foreign language subject. The best I can get is B in Chinese -_- . Wish I had chosen French as foreign language.

You will need to take the SAT or ACT if you want to go to a decent university.

http://www.fairtest.org/university/optional

Here is a list of schools, however, that do not require the SATs.

Almost all state schools will require you have one, regardless - SAT's is what US universities are all about. it's how they weed out their candidates. i strongly suggest you take them.

If you have a 93 iBT score, you can do about... 1600-1700 SAT score (that's usually the correlation)

I work as a college consultant, so if you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me (I'm expensive though, watch out)

I'm not sure about other states, but at the moment CA is going through some extremely serious budget problems. I think we are going to run out of money real fast if we don't get a proper budget + we're in huge debt. Thus, the UCs and the CSUs are going to get more expensive in the coming years. I've even heard of community colleges rejecting students...

However, as it stands, I'd suggest considering a private university if you want CA. Yes, I know privates tend to cost more, but they have much more money to give out as financial aid at the moment. I'm not saying don't consider UCs and stuff, neither am I saying privates won't be affected. Just don't block out all private universities simply because of the upfront cost.

Scholarships Scholarships Scholarships! Those will save your life!

I guess I'll give some suggestions like

University of Redlands - Southern CA - Inland (Hot summers, cool winters- generally dry)
University of San Diego (Not UCSD) (still might be too expensive)
University of San Francisco - Central/Northern CA - Bay Area (Cool everything, Colder winters)

And if you're looking for publics, try
San Jose State University (CSU)
Cal Poly (CSU) (Probably the best CSU - San Luis Obispo) - $27,000

I'd say I like Cal Poly, SJSU, and University of San Francisco the most.
University of Redlands can offer up to 25% scholarships to "high quality" international students

Edit: UCs like Berkeley, San Diego, and Irvine are definitely options though. You may have to take loans or something, but keep 'em open.

I would also recommend taking the SAT.
Not only does it increase chance of getting in, I'm pretty sure it opens up some scholarships if you get certain scores.

My iBT score's break down is 28 in reading, 29 in listening, 15 in speaking (pretty bad score -_- ), 24 in writing so I don't know if that correlation is right for me though.

I will PM and look like I already late for the ACT test. But anyways, there is not much time left.

I think I won't take the SAT test. Anyways, I will check with my school to make sure of the graduation date.

you missed the application window to start on the fall on '09, you're going to have to wait until '10 to start
for east coast schools,
penn state, U delaware, rutgers, maryland are all pretty well rounded and can offer the majors you want, and also have premed programs if you're sure you want to do them. Penn state has a 6 year MD program which is pretty competitive.

So I have missed some but the last time I check but Portland State doesn't have a deadline although their deadline for application for scholarship is April 1st. So I may have some chances :D
