I've noticed a large number of posts recently where people have improperly or ineffectively quoted another user. This obviously doesn't apply to many of us who have no problem completing such a simple task. However, I feel it is my duty to teach those of us who don't yet understand it how they can quote someone so that it isn't confusing, and so that the post isn't flooded with broken code.
Quote type 1: Responding to a prior post in the same thread.
So you were reading a thread, and you want to reply directly to a comment someone else read. Follow these simple steps:
1) Check to see if the post you are responding to is the last post in the thread. If yes, then you can get away with replying without quoting (but make sure after you submit to check that nobody posted immediately before you... if that happens just edit your post and indicate at the top who the post is directed at i.e. @micronesia) but if no then click the 'quote' button at the top right of their post and continue to step two.
2) This brings you to a page where you can write your reply. Do not touch the code that is already there. Start your response below the code. It is really very simple! Some people play games where they edit what is inside the quote to make a point or as a joke, but definitely don't do that if you are going to make a mistake and mess up the code (it's usually lame to do it anyway).
3) Click reply. Even if someone ninja posted before you, your post will contain the quote you are replying to so it's clear where you are coming from.
Frequently asked question: Can't I just copy/paste the post directly from the thread into the reply box at the bottom?
answer: Technically you can do that and edit in the code yourself (if you know how to do that you don't need to guide at all) but you are better off not doing this because it won't always be clear where the quote came from (especially if it is back three pages in the thread).
Quote type 2: Responding to multiple posts at the same time.
You found more than one post you want to reply to in a thread.
Frequently asked question: Can I just use the quote button like explained above, and make a new post for each response?
answer: No you really shouldn't do that. Try to keep your reply to one post.
Follow these easy steps in order to create one all-inclusive post:
1) Open a new tab or browser, and visit the same thread with both. Using one browser, click the quote button on the first post you want to reply to. On the next page, copy or cut all of the text out of the box. Click back on your browser.
2) Go to your other tab, and paste the current text into the reply window at the bottom. Write your response directly under the text you just pasted in.
3) Return to the first tab, and click quote on the next post you want to reply to. Cut the text out of the box, and go back.
4) Repeat 2-3 until you have finished replying to everything. Then click 'Post'. Close one of the tabs, and continue browsing tl with the other one.
Summary
For the most part, quoting properly is very easy and I truly believe that it is within the capacity of every user of tl to do it properly. I write this not because most of my blog readers are in need of this lesson, but rather because we can point newbies who fail at quoting properly to this page to see the error of their ways. Good luck!
FAQ:
Right while I was posting somebody made a new post in the same thread. I want to reply to that post also. Am I better off just quoting it and creating a second consecutive post, or should I copy the text from quoting it, and then edit it into the bottom of my post?
answer: The lazy way is the former, but the better way is the latter. I am not sure what tl staff thinks about this issue so maybe they can point out their answer to this.

I only rarely see people having problems with quoting, but I guess it could be useful anyway. The main problem is that the people who actually need help with quoting will probably never even read this thread.

Didn't you hear chill in the last stream? I'm the worst protoss in the history of tl.
And like I said in the OP, the people who need this won't necessarily find it, but can be pointed to it.

Thanks for the effort. Really, thank you. However, I just can't understand why anyone would really have any use for this info, I thought it was just how it worked o_O

I agree with you... I don't know why they have so much difficulty... but they are not doing it correctly. Hopefully pointing them to this thread will remind them or show them how to quote correctly.

I disagree. There can be many reasons to edit what is already there. E.g. you might want to excise the parts that aren't relevant or bold a part of the quote that you want to emphasize.
Frankly this blog seems like much ado about nothing to me.

Frankly this blog seems like much ado about nothing to me. Then what about all those cases of people quoting incorrectly? I'm getting tired of it and this way at least I can point them to this. And also, some people actually might benefit from the method I offered for quoting multiple posts at once. It's nothing special, but it might not have occurred to someone before.

Typos...
Atypical word usages that you aren't sure on...
I mean it just underlines the errors so it's no big deal to have it on all the time.

Although I find it kind of annoying when I see a word that is apparently spelled wrong (i have spell check built into my firefox too apparently) I look back and the word underlined is "zergling", "starcraft" "iloveoov", etc it is just kind of annoying
