I'm curious to know what people here are studying in college and why you are studying it. Is it your parents want or yours or perhaps both? I'm not really sure what to major in but from college conventions I've been to, a lot of freshmen are undecided until about their third year.
Also iss anybody majoring/minoring in Sports Management? I'm really into sports, especially basketball and football. I've googled some schools that have this and there aren't many that show up. If you are majoring or minoring in it or know something, can you describe what it's like? Thanks

engineering cuz i like math?? but i want to do computer engineering because im interseted in computers :D
but im not so sure yet

Sports management I heard is popular at SDSU (I might be wrong) because Dennis Green is teaching a core class for that major (former football coach)
I'm a statistics major... =P
|
specialization in biochemistry. Didn't know what I wanted to do after high school so this seemed like an all-around nice life sciences program. I was also partially (or maybe unconsciously fully) forced by my parents. It wasn't what I expected but it's alright for me. However, I know a ton of people who hate the program lol. They found out biochem is not biology and chemistry
Sports management... you'd probably need to take a human kinetics major along with a business minor. The science stuff isn't too bad, you'll just have to memorize a hell of a lot (bones, muscles etc.)
|
Poli Sci major and writing minor, because I want to.
|
Xusneb, what is biochem then? Lol
But about sports management, I was thinking more into the marketting type, I'm taking AP statistics and I figured this would be a great help if I want to major in sporta management. But I'm thinking about taking anatomy, like sports pyschology and that kind of stuff.

I am currently a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) major and am thinking about minoring in Chinese as well. My goal is to go to med school so I basically chose a major that will have all of my pre med prerequisites. My parents didn't care at all, even though my mom is Chinese, but I got lucky I guess she doesn't make me do things I don't want to do, she just tells me that whatever I choose to do, I better do it well.
If you're interested in sports, maybe consider Exercise Biology? I know about 3 people that are majoring in that and they seem to really enjoy it.
|
Mathematics, because it's interesting and challenging.
|
Well it's different in Australia... I'm doing a Bachelor of Science (Professional Software Development) (Specializations: Artificial Intelligence and Enterprise Systems)
|
Pharmacy major, I make money + guaranteed job after I graduate. Assuming I finish that is
Chemistry isn't my thing, biology isn't my thing, hell, nothing in pharmacy is my thing. I just live through it, just like I lived through high school. :T

electrical engineering. I'm basically guaranteed a job after i graduate, and i like most of the classes. The aspect of being able to see something in my mind and build it appeals to me.
Don't worry about it too much, you can always change your major. lots of things in college arn't exactly like they were in high school, so keep an open mind. For example, from doing physics in high school, what would you expect physics in college to be. Probably lots of kinemataics (study of moving/colliding bodies). Physics is nothing like that in college- a lot more charges, quantum, etc.
|
Psychology is my major right now.
I am making an effort to dual major in data as well.
|
Biz econ i like exploiting people for their money.
|
econ pre-med because i'm suicidal
|
Computer Science major, because I want to program vidya games and I just like computers and technology period. If I can't do that, there are several jobs across the country that could use a programmer.
I'm minoring in Music because I love it and because I don't really see myself making a career out of teaching or playing. But you never know. I'm only a freshman atm.

:O It's not biology and chemistry? uh oh, that's what I applied as for my major

I study molecular biology (which is pretty much the same as biochemistry), third year. Completely my own choice. Works different in Denmark, there isn't anything called 'majors' or 'minors', you just choose a line of study, and then you apply for the bachelor's program. After I get my bachelor's degree in summer 2009, I'm gonna apply for the master's degree of molecular biology.

fine art.. i left town and took a serious loan to do it.. i dont know why...

Psychology major and philosophy minor, because I loves me some learnings.

TL = Man of Science.
Biology major which I absolutely hate with all the passion in the world was my least favorite class in high school and I suck at it. Would rather be a Chemistry major because I love it and can comprehend concepts much better. Chemistry requires less memorization of stupid shit which is opposite of biology which is basically all memorization. Third year in Biology can't turn back now, also filling out things for Premed, but with the grades I have now its not looking good.
Make sure you major in something you like and don't let other people influence you, be a stubborn asshole that way you can be happy.

can you give some info. why you like computers? maybe some background info. as well. I never understood why people like computers so much. It's interesting.

Right now I'm an engineering major, but I want to switch into physics and math double major. I was a clarinet performance major last year, but I didn't do so well.

wow that sucks..
I'm thinking of majoring in biology or CS; but I'm not really sure. I will finish my first quarter of college in a few days so I'm in no rush.

Electrical engineering because I've always enjoyed math and electronics/computers. Specifically want to do some VLSI design or something along those lines.

Psychology + Business double major

I'm majoring in computer science with a minor in math because I like both alot but I'd rather have a job involved with computers.

Only 2 of my friend actually do something related to what they majored in. Most people want to see that you have a Bachelor's in something more so to show that you were able to endure a 4 year institution.
I guess if you're going into medicine or computers, the prereq majors are necessary... but for everyone else... =/
I was English and Psych double major. And what do I do now? Overseas education consultant and part time Starcraft caster.
|
@susie what did you expect to do with those majors when you first started?
|
my major is cell biology and genetics : ) i'm in my second year now and i'm really worried about how much more biology i can handle. i've been forced to take other courses such as organic chemistry which i enjoy much much more than any of the biology courses i've been taking. also, science was never my number one, it was kind of a parent-force-into situation : (

I started as a computer science major. Then went into Elementary Education. Both of these things because I knew that I could get a job with them when I finished. Then I realized that I didn't want to do either of them and I was miserable.
Eventually graduated with 2 majors that I'm somewhat interested in. With English I figured I could do something in advertising or editing, perhaps go to grad school for creative writing or something. To be honest, by the time I chose my majors I just wanted to get the hell outta school. ^^

Feel the same exact way right now.
Although parents didn't force me into, might of indirectly, but was determined to do school myself without their help.

My parents suggested the program I'm in right now and I think it was a decent choice. I was going into mathematics in either case so

Biochemistry (and science in general) was quite misunderstood by me. Like other naive people, I figured it was a merge of high school biology and chemistry and, hey, I liked those courses in high school! Actually, biochem is just looking at life on a molecular level eg. protein interactions and structures, signalling pathways, DNA expression. It's actually pretty interesting stuff, you just can't exactly see your experiments except through ... secondary experiments lol
The problem for me was that I didn't have a biochem course till 2nd year. First year was just general sciences and I had a single biochem course in the winter semester of 2nd year. So basically, we were in the dark for a while and by then, as kids are, we're too lazy/scared to switch programs. Even though we're young, we think "meh, I'm half done, I might as well finish". This is how a ton of people in my program in 4th year have no intentions of going into biochemistry research. Most people wants to go to med school, pharm school, law school, dentist school, uhhh mba? ... Yea, sry, just ranting about university. So the lesson is: research your degree and find out if you'll actually like it
EDIT: Wow, a lot of people in the life sciences. Actually, it's not too late to switch to chemistry if you're in 2nd year. I knew a friend who did that and by that time he had all the prereqs for med school. Don't be afraid to change if you really hate your program or happen to find your calling in life. You're young, a few extra years in school isn't gonna ruin you!

Environmental Science, with a concentration in Geoscience. I may end up with a double major also in Geology, or a minor in Physics or something else that I haven't decided yet. Why am i doing it? Because i like it (or at least i think i do :s)

I'm in pure math. After highschool I wasn't really sure what I wanted to study -- something in science though. Math or physics were my main interests. But then physics got more boring and math got more awesome throughout my first year at university so I went into math. Also, my dad is a math prof at my school so I've grown up with it, which no doubt influenced me in some way. Anyone else write the Putnam last Saturday?
Job prospects: None! Yay pure math...
|
Perhaps a teacher Zortch? Haha
|
Oh please no! I think I'd go crazy teaching highschool or elementary school. That is a job I do not have the skills to do. I'll probably just end up in grad school for 5 years after my undergrad and then have no job, unless I get lucky.

In 2 weeks time I find out if I get accepted into the med school at my Uni. If I get in then I'm pretty sure I'll find a specialisation that I'm interested in eventually, just because there are so many options if you get into med school.

Dude I feel the need to say this because I'm going to be in your shoes in 3 more semesters (hopefully), but GOOD LUCK, hope you get accepted~!

Honors Nanotechnology Engineering (Co-op), but more like Advanced Materials Engineering. I entered into the program because I wanted to go into some sort of Engineering/Applied Science program. My parents didn't pressure me into any program; it was all my choice.
Even though I'm in a co-op program, I'm not as hot as those Electrical Engineers, and the economy isn't helping. I have no idea how my future will turn out in terms of job opportunities =/.

I'm majoring in awesome and minoring iron ore and gold mostly.
|
i majored in chemical engineering, i had minors in chemistry and biochemical engineering, and minors in math and chinese that i never finished
i'm a grad student in chemical engineering, so i'm using my degree =p

In college my major was social sciences, now I'm majoring in psychology and most likely to add a double major in cultural anthropology

Just as much as I took quantum mechanics, I took classical mechanics. If you take physics in general you get electrodynamics, thermodynamics, classical mechanics, quantum mechanics and nuclear physics, .
And then each of those have a lot of subsystems which often are crossovers between them, like statistical mechanics being a quantum interpretation of thermodynamics.
Anyhow, at least when I read physics in HS we had a lot of stuff on the general theory of relativity, electromagnetic waves, thermo etc, which is not mechanics at all, the only part we did not go into is quantum and that is understandable since it requires a ton of math not available to HS students.
Come to think of it, we even did thermo, electromagnetic waves and relativity theory in elementary with a bit of nuclear physics thrown into the mix. Of course we did not go into them super deep but we did experiments on interference patterns, showed how a refrigerator works, electron orbitals and how they emit/absorb EM-waves when they jump and a basic why/how nuclear fission/fusion works. Hmm, now that I think back at what we did in elementary it was most of HS physics and even some of the first year in UNI, there was one thing I remember that I learned in elementary that I did not hear about again until second year in UNI.
And about that, I went in a special class in elementary :p
And oh, I'm into physics/math since they are so easy if you understand them and therefore I did not care enough to pick something else.

I did applied math for my undergrad.
After I finished college, I got a job as a buyer in the outsourcing department of a company. I used as much math as a junior high school kid would use - decimals, percents, and a billion excel sheets.
After debating whether to shoot myself or quit the job, I decided the latter. Now I am working on my masters of math education. I think teaching math is at least somewhat meaningful, and at least I have a job after I graduate.

I want to do chemical engineering and economics, but I'm afraid that these choices might change later on... I'm mostly concerned about picking something that I would like to do in order to maintain my happiness and sanity. What do you guys think about these subjects?

It depends on how smart you are, chemical engineering can be really hard if you are not ready for it. They study statistical mechanics which is basically using quantum mechanics to construct all of thermodynamics from scratch, if you have a good sense of logic it is awesome to see how it all fits together but if you are an average Joe it is horrible.
Social sciences are never hard so do whatever with it :p
