I asked for help about surfing in my block about half a year ago and we really pulled it off and went surfing
me and some friends of mine ended up surfing in France,Hossegor and Zarauz in spain we went ther by car it was absolutely awesome: we were there for like 2 weeks and we really got to surf (even some blue waves after a while), even though it's quite hard to learn imo
I had quite some respect for the ocean and the big waves, being an austrian (I never was at the atlantic befor) so my friends and me decided to go to a sufing school and get some lessons, so that they can tell us what's dangerous, what we should watch out for, what our mistakes are ...
but after all if you are a little trained and keep your cool, it is not so dangerous if the waves are only 2m
we only took 3 days at a surfing school, to get the basics and because after all you yourself have to learn surfing and I doubt don't think it's worth the money to have an instructor that long...
we were the white waters for like four or five days, after that we were able to surf some blue waves too
it was soo awesome =)
your boards were like 7'6 or sth like that so they were really huge it's impossible to duck-dive with them it is quite some hard work to get out there to the "bigger" waves
haha, on the day we arrived we tried it out with a short board, but there is just no way you can learn it with a short bord.....just no way
on the last we surfed there were like 2.5 meter waves and we had a surfing lesson, so the surfing instructor (thinking he was cool w/e) more or less forced us out (that's not entierly true, because all of us were eager to go out...hehe) but these 2m waves were to big for us but w/e we wiped out, paddled in again (very hard with the big boards) tried again and wiped out ...I even managed to stand up a couple of times but I couln't handel to ride the wave at the end of the lesson I really was exhausted and my chin was hurting as hell that was because the fin of my board hit me and cut me open in a crash (one of the many ) in the end I had to see a doctor who "operated" me (he need 5 points)
we also got to know many really relaxed ppl, and I mean REALLY relaxed if they were in a buring house they wouldn't run out, but walk slowly to the exit and admire the fire or sth like this =)
so all in all it was awesome and I am 100% sure I will do it again
I most likely will go to Portugal in april for two weeks or so and I am even considering a exchange year near the ocean
I just wanted to thank you once again for your nice reply
greets
PS: sorry for english, it sucks and is a bit weird to read PPS: I think I am overusing the word awesome, but it really was
I have always enjoyed going to the beach and riding waves on a softboard (the kind where you don't stand). When you say 2m, do you mean measured from the water level, or from the ground? If the former, then those are actually pretty big... and I couldn't ride them on my softboard haha.
the waves were pretty big this day (imo) it was 3m according to magicseaweed.com, but the surfing instructor said it was like 2-2.5 meters when we were out there don't know how they measure it and I don't think you can ride them with your softboard micronesia
do I have to upload pix on imagehack or sth like this?

omg that website is so sick! I can't wait till next summer.
let me know if you ever plan a trip to california. I live right across the street from Huntington Beach and I go out every morning. Im quite jealous of the region you live because France and Spain has great surf.

you measure waves from the back, not frrom the front. so rule of thumb is that you double the height given in a news report to reach a rough estimate of what the wave would look like from the front.

This doesn't really make sense to me. How is a wave a different height from the back?
Yup serfing rocks, but wiping out sometimes sucks hard... after your first day or less of surfing you should be able to stand and try and ride the waves..
@renegard zerg: I don't live in France or Spain, I was there just for holidays, I live in Austria, so I am far, far away from the ocean and waves I should envy you if you live near Huntington Beach, a surfer paradise...
