Whats so bad about German keyboards? They have y and z interchanged. This wouldn't usualy be a problem, if not a felt 100% of Flash games that need the keyboard would use Z X C as keys. What sucks even more is that every special character is changed. This wouldn't be a problem either if everything worked correctly, and to be honest nowadays it isn't, except for DOSBox. But I still have a trauma from my 8 year old impatient self, trying to find \ on the keyboard, because some DOS game thought I had an English keyboard.
What sucks even more are the hotkeys in Blizzard games. Different language versions use different hotkey settings, and the German hotkeys are BAD.
In the German version of WC3, r is for worker (Arbeiter) for humans. If you then play the night elves and want to produce a worker there (Irrwisch, 2 fucking r's) you unroot your tree (Entwurzeln). And if you do that, you unroot your goldmine as well, which takes a felt 5 minutes to build again. That happened to me so ridiculously often and cost me half of my night elf games.
Even Starcraft isn't safe from that. What I first played was the English version on LANs, so I was used to the English hotkeys right away. When I bought it, I bought the German version, which has different hotkeys. Lets look at the hotkey for Siege Tank, its T. Easy to reach and intuitive. In the German version they are called Belagerungspanzer, and I believe its hotkey is B. Doesn't matter thought, because I was used to pressing T already, and I did so. What happened is that I pressed t for 'Starten' instead, which is Lift off. I tell it to make a Tank it flies away . The consequence of that is not as bad as the night elf one, but its annoying as hell.
I found some language file, that you can replace to have the English hotkeys, now my interface is a mixture of German and English. For example, The menu (F10) is in English, if I click on Quit mission, the confirmation window is in German. At least the hotkeys work...
My first wish for SC2 is uniform or customisable hotkeys.

About Warcraft 3 - I don't care. About Starcraft - just download the English hotkeys and you're done. Or just install the English version. Hotkey for Tank in the German version is P.
I use English hotkeys and I'm happy with that. ~~

I always wanted to get the German StarCraft version, purely due to "Belagerungspanzer" . Also, computer games gave me an initiative on improving my English, I thought it might work with my German, too...too bad I didn't do it(yet).
Btw, hungarian layout also has z and y interchanged. I believe I'm one of the very few hungarian players who play with English layout (let's face it, as protoss pressing 5z6z7z8z9z is a lot easier if you got QWERTZ than QWERTY, but when I first had SC, on my father's laptop, only English layout was available and I got stuck with that).

Yeah, and that results in some abomination of German and English interface, the hotkeys work fine though.

I did. :D

i use doxstar in both wc3/sc. qwer asd zxc for all races, wc3 and sc.
|
hm there are many good german players who use doxstar and even openly admit it on the broodwar forums.. do you think the bwcl admins would punish them or anything? no, cus the majority of players is ok with it as long as its online and its unprovable anyways. especially a player like this who will probably never win anything big (just judging from the post, could be wrong). if it makes sc:bw more fun for him and keeps him playing longer if he feels the hotkeys are more comfortable, why be an ass about it?

just so you now, with my computer it is possible to switch between german and english keyboard by pressing Alt+Shift. now you can play a flashgame with a zxc configuration without problems. try if it works your you, too, and your flashgame problem should be solved

Just use keycraft and remap it. Or spend 20 bucks and get a english keyboard

Belgian keyboards have L directly next to M
which means that in a big percentage of my games I, at least once, lift off all my barracks instead of doing a round of marines best part is that you have to re-rally them all too!

German keyboard layout sucks, US one is much better... easier accessible special characters and ZXC next to each other. I use US layout primarily and when I need to type a German text I temporarily switch to German layout via Alt+Shift. It's very easy to be fluent in both layouts.
German game versions often suck too... you'll have problems with compatibility (also think of mods for some games) and you have to pay attention whether the game is censored or not. Better to get English versions by default (unless the game is from a German developer, then I get the original version).
That said, it is important that RTS games allow custom hotkeys, just like FPS games already did years ago. Now that many games are being used as an e-sport it's absolutely important that players can use a completely custom setup instead of being forced to use a mediocre default setup which might even be radically different from what they are used to. For example the US SC layout is "the default" but it's just barely "good enough", it could be better (some bad keys include P for probes, and S for "select larvae" but also "build scourge"). Though I guess on this site some will see this as a feature anyway, what with "keyboard dexterity" as a skill, difficulty in using the keyboard => harder game and so on... blargh.

French keyboard is even worse:
S= select larva / selectionner larve S= build overlord / fabriquer seigneur.
If you spam S you are fucked :O That is why i play P. Probe = sonde = S and i hotkey nexus on 1
+ Show Spoiler + btw come back on East

I think I never had compability issues with German versions, and I don't really care about censorship to be honest (in TF2 I think its quite fun). Voice acting sometimes hurts though.

German keyboard layout sucks. Keys you need very often like {[]]}\@ require combinations like AltGr+7 which is the reason I still haven't learned a real 10 finger system. I should switch to a variant of the US layout, but too lazy...

thats weird though
korean starcraft is in english with american hotkeys

As a programmer myself I got used to using my right thumb for AltGr, which works quite well actualy if your hands are large enough for that. Never learned a 10 finger system myself, I just my fingers sort of randomly.
