Or if the mysql is hosted on a different machine, try using either the IP address instead of the hostname of the mysql server.

Can't connect to MySQL server on '127.0.0.1' (111) got that, im only guessing "111" is the error number.

'127.0.0.1' is the ip address of 'localhost', which is the local machine where the web server is running. Is your mysql server hosted on the same machine as your webserver or somewhere else? Have you tried using 'localhost' in the connection string?

Anyways, do you have root access to the server (ie can access it via ssh or putty)? In the first error message, it seems that mysql cannot find the socket file. The only way (at least to me) to 'correct' this is by editing the my.cnf (mysql configuration) and checking for correct file/folder permissions. Edit: Found this link buried in my bookmarks, it should help: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/can-not-connect-to-server.html
