Ok. I'm officially pissed off at ATI. I went to a LAN party today to play bw on my new laptop, and couldn't get it to run in 640x480 8 bit color mode (which is the only setting bw can run on). You know why? Because my graphics card, ATI 2600, does not fucking support 8 bit color mode. Those assholes decided it would be a good idea to release a graphics card which breaks existing functionality.

This graphics card is targeted towards GAMERS, but THE CARD DOES NOT SUPPORT THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME. W T F. Fucking idiots, I should have bought an Nvidia card (the comparable Nvidia card DOES support 8 bit color mode).

I'm not the only one with this problem. There are countless others out there with the exact same issue who were never able to resolve it... google my error, "Starcraft was unable to switch video modes" and you'll see them.

ATI should release a goddamn driver that patches this shit.

There are some sort of 3rd party/hacked drivers out there I think.

I actually dug around quite a bit and didn't find anything, besides an catalyst driver which bypasses OEM driver update requirements and uses catalyst instead. If you can remember where you saw it though toss a link up =]

I have a 2600xt and starcraft runs fine. You can also configure ATI catalyst so that it maintains starcraft's aspect ratio while playing in a widescreen monitor.

I'm using 1680*1050 32bit mode

You aren't explaining the whole story. Starcraft CANNOT run in 1680x1050 32 bit color mode. What settings exactly did you tweak to make it run? I'm running vista x64 business btw.

I just installed starcraft and it ran fine without any tweaks.
I installed the newest ati catalyst drivers. I use Vista Ultimate 32 bit. My resolution is set at 1680*1050 32bit. To compensate for my widescreen monitor, I go to (DVI) panel, enable GPU scaling, maintain aspect ratio.

Maybe it's Vista 64 bit. Try right clicking starcraft.exe and go to properties, then run it in compatibility mode.

The thing is, my video card is incapable of running in 8 bit color mode, which is required for starcraft. When you run starcraft.exe, it tells your video card to switch to the correct resolution/color mode, but mine fails. Even though I have it set to run in the correct resolution, there is no way I've found to get the video card to run in 8 bit color mode (no, changing the compatability mode/ telling the exe to run in 256 color mode doesn't work).
