If you haven't tried defragmenting, that's the obvious answer. Using up all of your space, then deleting it and reusing definitely calls for defrag.

hmm i doubt overheating is the problem my laptops actually quite cool most of the time but i might just try undervolting sometime anyway.. conserve energy and all that

I think I got about a 25% increase in battery life after undervolting. It's definitely worth it if you have the time.
