So I just returned from my week at Estes Park, Colorado and let me say it was no vacation. What some people would call beautiful mountain scenery would become my hell for the 6 days.
We woke up at 6 a.m. and hit up the trails for a 5-6 mile run. Then at 4 p.m. we would go out again and pound out an 8-10 miler and soak in a freakishly cold mountain stream.
2-a-days are ridiculously painful at altitude while running up and down mountains. The last morning I felt like dying. Anybody else have any running experience at altitude? I would like to know how you felt throughout.
I live in Florida btw, so the altitude really screwed me up. I'm going to register myself for a 5k this weekend and see if I can finally break 17:00 minutes. I've come close, but I feel this could be it.
Sorry if it seems like I'm bragging or whining, just wanted to rant :D

i run at about 4000 feet but i don't run as far as u

i think the rule of thumb for a place to be considered altitude is 1500 metres, so at least that im guessing

I've had some really rough training camps at ~2500m, really kicks the shit out of you.

wow 17 minute is really quick for 5km. some of the fittest people i met in the army did 2.4km in about 8 minutes but probably couldn't maintain that speed. good luck with the run. just posting to express my awe. so many people on TL with so many talents.

I lived in Colorado when I was about five and my mother didn't realize that there was an altitude difference so she dragged s around town and I got got really sick.

My PR as of now is 17:24 for a 5k. Sadly, its not good enough to get me on the varsity squad.
A 5k is a 5000 Kilometer run, equivalent to about 3.1 miles.

I do 3k in like 15:00 but that's uphill so I guess u can't really compare

A 5k is typically done on a preset course, and the terrain can vary. Sometimes its muddy and wet, sometimes lots of uphill and sand, or sometimes your lucky and get flat ground with relatively short grass.

I have teammates that do 8km in 30 minutes, but that's on a track, obviously it's going to be much harder on difficult terrain.
Impressive, keep going!
