However, it says it's my Birthday now. It probably is in Europe or something.

Hmm, to be honest. I really ain't happy. I'm more blah than anything. I'd rather stay young. I've always acted like a kid. Nowadays life seems more like a drag than anything, and with age comes more responsibility.

Such a downer, but I guess that's life eye?

Edit: Wow I sounded way too emo. Like I've said I ain't depressed, but for the first time in my life. I'm not excited about my birthday..

Most people grapple with getting older, and how it brings on responsibility. However, you can't underestimate the benefit of the new privileges either. I'm buying a new car which I couldn't do before I was 23, so now I have to be an adult, but I get to be an adult.

I turn 25 in exactly one month.

I used to see it the way you do, Mickey. I thought getting older would suck (though I didn't really start feeling down about it all till about 22 or 23). More responsibility, I thought, and less time to be who you are and do what you want. But that has changed.

The thing is, everyone tells you what it is to be a good adult. You are supposed to go to college, then get a good job, perhaps settle down and pop out some kids. And while I think such a way can be great for some people, it certainly aint for all of us, and some of us see such an existence as rather bleak, to say nothing about it being boring.

But don't let anyone fool you, there are real alternatives. You only have to take on as much responsibility as you want to. Take me, for example (not that everyone should be like me - I would hope that's not the case at all). I go to college, but only 2 classes a semester. I work an easy 22 hour a week job (I don't do shit - just read on the internet and listen to music all day). I don't have kids, and don't have a wife. I don't have a car payment. I do have a car, but I prefer bicycling INFINITELY to riding in a car, so I really only ride the car once a week, and spend about 20 dollars every 2 months on gas. I am actually looking to give up driving altogether here pretty soon (next few years). I have very few obligations.

I don't have a career and don't want one. I had myself vasectomized (you can read about it in my blog) so that I never have to worry about children. No responsibility there. My life is purely about doing whatever I feel like, which often times is just bicycling around and looking at things, reading books, listening to music, and visiting friends. I like to do creative things too - make music, write things, make art.

I feel better about life all the time, and look forward to being a 40 (even 50 and 60) year old single bum that other 40 (and 50 and 60) year old folks envy because they are sucked into soulless jobs, boring family lives, and so on.

Nothing wrong with getting older, dude! Just find your direction. When you are lost, enjoy the search. When you aren't lost, enjoy that too. Hope you cheer up!

for me 19 was the last birthday i looked forward to. After that its who cares(drinking age is 19 here). No other birthday will hold any sort of real significance again. I even have trouble keeping track of how old I am now, and I am only 23. My age is just that insignificant to my life now. If someone asks me my age I have to think about it for a second.

Thank you for that post. Seriously, that post really made a difference on my train of thought. I really appreciate it.
