It's always really funny when they try to explain otherwise.
Have you seriously ever met someone like this? I mean common. I've met a decent number of emo/scene kids, and I don't remember any of them calling me a conformist, or bragging about how non-conformist they are. You're associating a subculture with a few morons who belong to it. It's your problem for talking to the stupid ones and not the smart ones. It'd be not entirely different from making a generalization about a race.
Occasionally people call me a non-conformist, and maybe it's true. With most things in life I don't deliberately do them differently because I want to be different, I do them differently because I think they're better. But sometimes the mere idea of doing something different is enough to make me believe it's better. EX: basically anything involving art, I believe it's best to do things as differently as possible so that you can create something unique (to which one could only make an apples to oranges argument regarding its quality in comparison to existing art).
Since this thread regards fashion specifically, I'll say this: I care a bit about fashion, but I refuse to wear logos. It's not because everyone else is wearing GAP and Hilfiger or West49 or whatever crap, and I just want to be different. It's because I feel like a tool if I pay someone so that I can advertise their product... They should be paying me, or at least giving me a big discount, as apposed to what it is in reality: me paying extra money for a brand name.. As if I'll wear a TL shirt because I like TeamLiquid and I don't mind advertising it (+ the shirt wasn't exactly expensive), but I don't give a fuck about some clothes company full of people I've never met, who only care about prying my money from my pocket.
