I'm leaving for NYC in 2 days. My girlfriend is coming with me and living with me for about a week, then she's off to Seattle while I will remain in New York and work as an intern for about three months.
I'll try to keep my blog up to date with pictures of the city and tourist attractions.
For those who are living in New York, I need some suggestions as of where to tour.
Here are my plans so far,
Times Square for the New Year's celebration, Rockefeller Centre, Wax museum, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Chinatown, Fifth Avenue.
I need a few famous malls in Manhattan since my GF loves to shop. Also, I need suggestions for a semi-fancy restaurant since I promised her a nice meal.
Thanks guys!

Times Square for the New Year's celebration Yeah, don't. Take her to a show or something instead, or watch in bed with her. It's remarkably unspectacular and a giant pain in the ass to stand for hours in freezing temperatures with a bunch of other tourists, unless she REALLY wants to go. Then "insist" not to and give in, so you get a one up on her later when she sees how dumb it is.

I'm going to New York the 8th of January so I'd love some suggestions aswell!
Some nice clothes shops would be nice. And some nice restaurants around Manhattan. Not too expensive though ~15-20$. Which is the easiest way to travel around New York? Taxi or the Subway? Some price examples would be nice aswell.
I'm staying at Hotell Wellington, 55th and 7th avenue. Someone know about this place and can tell me something about it so I know what to expect from it?
Lets hope you get a nice trip Cambium!

Subway/bus is much cheaper than taxi, but the system is crappy compared to more modern subways like Japan. Walking really isn't so bad though.
There's decent food to eat anywhere you go, especially in China Town/Little Italy, although a lot of the Japanese restaurants are fake/run by Koreans in my experience and overpriced. My personal favorites are Korean BBQ and Brazilian BBQ, neither of which is very unique but they're still excellent if you go to a nice restaurant. Plus it's a bit hard to find Brazilian food in Sweden. Also, grab some pizza from a real parlor (not Sbarro's), cause NYC Pizza > Chicago > Everywhere else.

Are you suggesting that there is no chance whatsoever go find a nice restaurants for those prices?

Depends on what you mean by nice. You can get great food at that price, but it won't be from a super nice or fancy restaurant. Whatever you do, just don't go somewhere like FRIDAYS or some other big chain. They offer the same mediocre food there that they do at all their other stores in the country, only they charge 2x cause it's NYC.

I don't want to eat goose and shit like that with a waiter waiting for me to drink up my glass of wine so he can refill it and I don't want to eat at mcdonalds..

go to SOHO for shopping =] it's on Broadway by West Houston Street.

easiest one stop for shopping.
1. macy's herald square (34th street) 2. bloomingdales uptown or downtown (different styles) 3. SoHo has some nice shops, and national brands. 4. uptown shopping district 5th ave. (south central park downwards) and such. the big names associated with NYC (gucci, prada, hermes, etc) 5. Century 21 in the financial district. right by Ground Zero. its not too upscale since its kinda pick and grab place... but has high end name brands.
i can't help with restaurants, but i will reaffirm Jibba's comment. do not go anywhere near the USA chain restaurants or the fake pizza places.

Thanks for the advice, and I agree to some extent that all those things are really over-hyped and not worth it. I would much prefer to watch it on TV whiling having a nice SC game or w/e.
However, I don't think there is a way for me to get out of it. She's very insistent on going.
Anyway, I still need a nice restaurant (one that you'd have to dress up for) around the Manhattan area.
To Storchen, here's the NYC public transit site (I think): http://www.mta.info
The route maps: http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm
The fares: http://www.mta.info/mta/news/hearings/fareandtoll/subbus-sample.htm
It depends on what you do, but I think a 7-day fun pass should be a good investment.

Yes =) You won't find a nice restaurant for those prices.
That's almost like McDonalds price range
Then again I have no idea what you mean by "nice". Surely you can get decent food for that small amount of money but nowhere near NICE. And when you mention "nice" and "restaurant" together I thought you actually meant a good restaurant, and that's not gonna happen for $15.
But if you're saying you want some decent place to eat, then it's a different story of course.
