Hello,
Your website, and specifically your ability to get information to the gamers of WCG, is very frustrating.
I've been playing in WCG and Toronto LANs for about 5 years now, from TFL events to the qualifiers in Calgary and Vancouver, to the finals last year in Montreal. I know I'm not good enough to win; however, I really do enjoy playing in WCG.
Every year is the same story. WCG provides vague information and promises clarification later on. Every year I find out where I'm supposed to go and when through word of mouth on other websites. How these third parties know, when the official WCG website says nothing, I have no idea.
This year is no different. Since May, the WCG offline LAN event page has advertised an event in Calgary as "TBD". And since May I've been refreshing the page hoping for an update. It was a few days ago when Calgary was removed all together that prompted me to write this.
I understand it's not up to the WCG Canada staff to decide which locations will participate, but please let us know what's going on in the future. There were online qualifications; however, they were held back in June-July when Calgary's offline date was still TBD. Had you mentioned that there was a possibility that Calgary would be removed (which I'm sure you had wind of, I would find it hard to believe that the LAN centre pulled out with no build up and no substitute could be found), we could have played in the online competition. However, essentially all of western Canada is now left with no options.
Last year the online competition was held very close to the Canadian finals; essentially after all the LANs had taken place. If you failed to qualify through a LAN, you could still play in the online competition. Why was this changed this year? And in keeping with the theme of WCG dangling carrots and not revealing information, if you go to the online qualification page right now it says "No tournament at the moment. Stay tuned." Is there going to be another online tournament? If you didn't know (through alternate websites) that the qualifications had already happened, you might think another one was coming up.
I know coordinating a national tournament is no easy task. And I don't know if you guys work on a volunteer basis; I certainly respect the effort put in. But there are tons of communities and websites that will be more than happy to spread information. Because right now, it seems no one ever knows what's going on. And several people, myself included, as getting left in the dust.
Regards,
Me!

I was very surprised to check my email when I got into work and see three lengthy replies. The WCG Canada website is so rarely updated I assumed I would hear back from them after the WCG Grand Finals had already taken place.
For anyone interested, here was the result of their email:
-The organizers are just as annoyed at WCG organization as the gamers.
-No one in western Canada plays WCG so no LAN centres will commit.
-People who qualify from western Canada don't goto WCG anyways because it's always in eastern Canada, which creates more problems because they have to fill the gaps on short notice.
-Vancouver will now have a WCG event, SC and WC3 will be there.
-There may be another SC online qualifier very soon (~August 10)
-If the online qualifier doesn't happen, they may hand out special invitations to SC gamers willing to travel to Toronto.
I'm just waiting to hear back from them. Hopefully one way or another I'll be in Toronto August 24 to lose and make this all worth it.
