It’s hard to put into words my feelings on the closing of the unofficial teamliquid quakenet IRC channel. While I understand why the channel was closed, I am saddened by the loss. The community within a community has been like a home away from home for me. Throughout high school and college I would chat in the channel, knowing the same familiar names would likely be there to talk to. Though the channel may have been toxic at times, I’ve also found it to be inspiring and refreshing.
As I’ve mentioned in previous blogs the community within the channel helped me get through some rough times. The channel always inextricably pulled me back, no matter how many times I decided to “leave.”
The fact that the channel was closed without warning or feedback disheartens me. From what I've pieced together from hearsay and conversation in the channel (again, there has been no official statement on the channel's closing) the channel was closed because it reflected poorly on teamliquid's brand. That feels wrong to me. It feels like teamliquid is giving in to corporate overlords rather than focusing on the communities that gathered to watch brood war.
The channel has been unofficial for a while now, there are no ties between the IRC channel and the teamliquid site. Thus, the idea that edgy comments and dark humor within the channel are tied to teamliquid itself seems ludicrous. Any rational person doesn't blame a brand for its fans. Did some messages in the channel go too far? Almost certainly. But there never was any mention of needed moderation, never a call for people to be more PC. The channel was just axed.
Goodbye #teamliquid, you will be missed. And goodbye teamliquid, because after these actions I find it hard to support the brand I once loved.
Ephemerality
P.S. A number of channel regulars can now be found in ##teamliquid on quakenet.
Edit: And the channel is back!?!?!?! I take back what I said previously, and really have no idea what's going on >.>
Edit2: Apparently quakenet mods took the channel over and what will happen is still up in the air.

I don't think it had to do with "corporate overlords". It's no secret that site traffic is way up due to SC:R's announcement, and if the channel is just a small clique of edgelords going "Hur hur I raped a baby today, what'd you guys do?" then it's probably not going to be very inviting for newcomers, and ultimately, would be a waste of money to maintain when there are many other ways to chat with people outside of IRC.
That being said, it kind of sucks that it's gone, even though I didn't frequent it often.

But at least someone will now ban the racist, sexist, shameless, self-victimizing Dodo, huh?

There was basically one troll that I think pushed things over the edge, so in essence they let the troll win.
Edit: Most of the time there was actual discussion, less edginess.

Peculiar how it was shut down? Is the TS server still going?

Most people readily switched to Discord, those who aren't a fan of that splintered into multiple Teamspeaks (I run one for the TL Path of Exile guys), Mumbles and similar things. If any TL regs ever need a place on a TS for maybe 5-10 people max, feel free to contact me for further info.
For the Teamspeak the tl;dr is that it was, to my understanding, privately funded for years and when push came to shove the 'free' alternative was the one that ended up being picked and promoted overall. If the reason for closing the IRC are as Ephemerality said that's a bit weirder even from my perspective.
While I haven't visited #teamliquid since years at this point and can't speak to how it changed it does feel weird to see these things randomly explode, especially since quite a few people have memorable emotional connections to these things and the people that used them regularly. Sucks to lose this stuff, especially in this way. Hope you guys can find a way to organize yourselves despite this.
Anyway, to properly commemorate this occasion I dug through some old, old logs and found a couple gems. Keep in mind these quotes are most likely around ten years old so take them with that in mind. No harm intended. <3
I know there is one missing about Nyovne and dronebabo licking each other but I can't find that one for some reason. Oh, well.
RIP #teamliquid

Well IRC is a shitty protocol on its own anyway and one that is dying quite fast. It only really stays with the oldschool techies. With so much better communication channels available around it's no wonder it has gotten closed.

Dont stop with ##. Multiply until IRC is filled with #'s.
On a more serious note, I too know what it's like to lose your "community" within a community. battlereports.com was my home for a long, long time.
Sadly only a few of us are left on the unofficial ~NH forums after the main ones were closed due to spam/bots.
