So it never occurs to me that Leifeng cup in chinese is actually 雷锋杯.
And if that's the case, the translation is wrong, it should be:
Lei Fung Cup.
who is 雷锋?
Basically he was the superhero of communist China back in the 1960s.
If you are familiar with USSR history, he is basically the Chinese Alexei Stakhanov.
Government molded example of what a faithful to party, commit to communist ideology perfect
human being.
He is what you would be if you follow Chairman Mao (back then) lines to your heart and follow every step.
He even has a national memorial day.
Unlike Alexei Stakhanov, 雷锋 is still a huge figure in China.
The spirit of 雷锋 so called is often seen in taxi, or the LED display above banks.I think he is still referenced from time to time in official speeches.
Of cause there are more people starting to doubt him being that good, and how come he was ALWAYS photographed doing good things. Some are clearly reshots and posed.
But neither way, he has now transcend to a mythical figure that people look upto.
imo he is even more openly discussed by the Chinese than Chairman Mao because of the horrors that Mao brought in his later years of governance.
