Let’s Play: Touhoumon Purple!

Hello everyone! I am Monochromatic, and I am planning on completing a semi-blind text Let’s Play of Touhoumon Purple here on Teamliquid over the next several weeks. I’m hoping that several readers will interact with this let’s play over the course of its creation. Before we get to that, let us get some general information.

The patch (and information about the game) can be found [here], you need to supply your own emerald rom though.

What is Touhoumon Purple?

Touhoumon Purple (THP) is a Pokemon Emerald romhack whereby Pokemon are replaced with characters from the Touhou francise. Touhou is a Japanese bullet hell game series notable for its difficulty, music, and having way too many characters. It also an incredible amount of fangames, THP is just one of hundreds. In short, it’s Pokemon with anime girls instead of Pokemon.

Why are you playing this?

I wanted to do a Pokemon Romhack for a while, and this one stood out for several reasons:

One thing you might not know is that there are about ~15 different versions of Touhoumon. I chose this one in particular due to its completeness, relative lack of grinding, and the fact it is based on emerald, the best Pokémon game. Additionally, there is almost no information on this version, meaning that I am forced to play it semi-blind.

THP is based on touhoumon 1.8, which means that the physical and special split occured. Additionally, there are more characters than older versions in this specific hack.

What’s different?

There are several key differences in this romhack. The first of which is an all new type chart:

Additionally, evolutions have been overhauled in this hack. In the traditional game, pokemon evolved linearly, i.e. stage 1 to stage 2 to stage 3. These evolutions occurred upon leveling up, use of a evolutionary stone, or trading. THP changes this significantly: now all Touhoumon have only two stages, but several forms.

The first stage is the same for each Touhoumon: [C]hibi. This is denoted by a C in front of the name. There are also six possible evolutionary “shards” that evolve certain Touhoumon into a form. The possible forms are [A]ttack, [D]efence, [S]peed, [T]echnical, [H]elper, and [Ad]vent. Finally, a Chibi form could evolve into a normal form by leveling, and a handful of Touhoumon evolve via a seventh shard or by trading (albeit not into a specific form).

So to give an example of how evolution works, let’s look at Alice.

As you can see, one Touhoumon has four different possible evolutions. As if this wasn’t convoluted enough, each form has its own typing, base stats, and movepool. In other words, one Touhoumon has ton of potential.

Now, as this is a normal playthough, I am going to focus on ‘mons that have attack, speed, technical, or advent forms, as (I believe) they focus on attack. I’m going in semi blind, so we’ll see for sure later.

Why are you doing a Let’s Play?

The main reason was that I was 17 hours into the game when I accidentally deleted my savefile. Needless to say, I could use to motivation to start over again. I decided to do a Let’s Play to give me that extra push.

Additionally, I wanted to practice my writing style. A Let’s Play couldn’t hurt. This is my first time, so be gentle. :p

Finally, Teamliquid has been pretty quiet lately, and I’m hoping that this’ll get people talking again. I hope someone reads this, at least. Plus I want to get readers involved, so if you want to be named in the Let’s Play or want to be a certain character, just post in this thread!

Now then, let us get to the first order of business: what should our starter Touhoumon be? Your choices are:

Q: What's the best starter?

A: Alice is good throughout most of the game but especially good to have for Brawly. Sanae has a hard time in earlygame but gets good lategame resists. Reisen struggles early in but is the fastest of them when evolved and her Advent evolution is monstrous if you can wait that long.
