With all talk/stats about the heroes that are picked/banned, I figured out that for a change it would be interesting to talk about the one that aren't picked. The ones that are sadly shit-tier and will not see the light of day, the ones that could be used in top secret pocket strats, and the ones that nobody wants to see anyways because fuck them.
Main Event Updates: Day 1: Jakiro makes it off the list! (Picked by MVP.H6 against IG) Down to 23 unpicked heroes, 22 if you include the wildcards. Day 2: VG didn't get the memo that 6.83 was over and took two heroes off the list against C9. Spectre in game 1 and Sniper in game 2. Day 3: No changes. Main event itself seems to have less diversity than groups so far. Currently at 49 unpicked heroes when looking at main even only. Day 4: Morphling was finally picked by VG against MVP. Medusa was picked by VP.
Remaining 18 Heroes (wildcards included): -Alchemist -Death Prophet -Doom -Elder Titan -Faceless Void -Kunkka -Lone Druid -Meepo -Mirana -Necrophos -Ogre Magi -Outworld Devourer -Pudge -Riki -Terrorblade -Troll Warlord -Warlock -Weaver
Here are the pick counts during the qualifiers for the heroes that were still unpicked at the end of the group stage (Ursa is in the table but he was picked during the wildcards)
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/GwymaNX.png)
Weaver and Morph are the most suprising ones, especially since they had good records during the qualifiers (Morph was 6/2 in the CN quals and Weaver was 5/2 during the SEA quals), and Weaver benefited quite a lot from the Deso buff. Mirana is also a bit surprising given that Bane is quite popular so far in the group stage.
The ones at the bottom on the other hand sadly are not. DP nowdays is just a shitty version of Leshrac and TB is well TB.
Which ones do you expect to see used in pocket strats before the end of TI? Hopefully one of the MVP teams will pull out a Warlock before going out.

Needs more kunkka support love.
|
Yea, MVP.Phoenix should pick Warlock for March in their last group stage game against Secret just for the hell of it. He's retiring after TI, so might as well play his signature hero and go out with a bang.
|
With all the gold everyone gets and the items to save teammates like Glimmer cape, I don't think LD will every come back without a buff. Buff the bear.
|
It's unlikely but I want to see late game Spectre with double haunt at least once this TI
the most surprising out of this list is definitely Jakiro though, I don't think he's that bad in the meta
|
I was sure vengeful spirit was completly ignored, as well as SD. Who picked them?
|
aw yeah Kunkka Support would be dope. Kunkka's one of my favorite heroes but as a carry I feel Ember kinda fills the same role better. Kunkka support is fucking legit though, I saw ppd play him on stream a while ago, I could see him giving it a go.
Also, Venge was picked by VG against Empire, SD was picked by EG against Empire and by MVP.P against Fnatic.
|
I'm surprised to see Void and Jakiro there.
Medusa pretty much deserves it because of how utterly, disgustingly outclassed she is by Gyro at the moment.
Elder Titan, bar none my fave hero will probably make an appearance or two. Natural Order always finds a way
|
If Magnus finds little more success during today matches, I think at least one team will try to pull out the combo with Ursa.

Im expecting some of these heroes to see play during TI, many of them are niche picks, but can be realy strong, like Ursa, Weaver, Doom and maybe even Medusa or Spectre. Heroes im not expecting to see at all: Lone Druid Terrorblade, Death Prophet and OD.

No Sniper or Troll thanks Icefrog
|
Its honestly sad how honestly dog shit DP is nowadays. I really quite liked playing her but she is just completely outclassed by Lesh in every meaningful way and isn't all that playable otherwise.
|
I think you should cross out ursa. He was picked by archon but that was wild card.
|
no warlock is almost shocking considering the 2 Korean teams
|
I want to ask something simple, which factors determine heroes popular in meta?
|
I want to see Fnatic break out the Mushi OD so badly...
|
I'm so sad how little love Riki gets in this game. I hope they buff him if he doesn't get picked in TI5. Great stats, thank you for the work!

I believe that an overwhelmingly strong pick will surface (Ember/Voker 6.80, DP/Razor/Brew 6.81, Sniper/Troll 6.83, Lesh/Gyro 6.84) combined with some global factors (kill gold, tower armor, comeback mechanics) which influence the pace of the game. The rest of the popular heroes will probably work well in some way with the pace of the game or the FotM pick, while those that don't fit in at all/are just dogshit weak and outclassed (like medusa and OD now) will not be picked.

I'd rather not, if they buff him anymore, he'll be the next pub cancer.

I mean anything can be the next pub cancer. Lets look at some heroes that aren't popular right now, and imagine them being buffed to god-tier status
Night Stalker- Dota "Dark Ages" Lone Druid, TB - Rat every game Medusa- Every game highground, 1 hour+ (kinda like sniper except even stronger?) Abaddon- No one dies anymore OD- Midlane literally unplayable Necrophos- Lategame unplayable, carries cant buyback ever
The only hero I can see being quite fun to play against even if he gets top-tier status is Kunkka.

Any of the unpicked heroes were picked today?

As far as I can tell they weren't.

"Late game literally unplayable, get one shot by crit"
Although I do love that hero.

DP, necro, sniper, riki, TB, meepo and OD can all languish in unpickability for the next ten patches for all I care. I think those heroes being unpicked is half the reason this patch is among my favourites.
Morph and weaver are a bit surprising, however. So is ursa; that hero's never been stronger in terms of raw power, imo, he's just kind of awkward. Finding a way to make him work could pay dividends.

Potentially the first TI without Pudge.

Agreed for all except riki, and I'd probably add Doom, Lycan and Void to the list. Heroes that exist just to make people not-play the game can go to hell
EDIT: how could I forget silencer
|
riki belongs on that list.
Heroes I think will be picked: Pudge, Kunka, Weaver
|
|
We are in dire Need of some (core) Kunkka.
|
Interesting that Ogre is on the list. Strong support in most ways, sadly too short range on stun for a melee support.
|
Although not in the actual group stage so far, Ursa was picked by Archon in the Wildcards, so he hasn't been totally ignored this TI.
Will any of these get picked up in the main event, I personally only see Faceless Void for EG or Warlock for MVP being possibilities. The rest, there seems multiple better options at the moment (especially with teams seeming to want more in the way of Slow's and AoE stuns instead of more single target Stuns at the moment.)
Time will tell of course, and unless there is a significant change in the meta in the three days until the Main Event (which is possible), we will likely have all the picks we're going to get this year.
|
It's inevitable that Weaver and Morphling will be picked.
Heroes not being picked in competitive games does not mean necessarily mean the hero is weak. Heroes in Dota have unique concepts and sometimes the hero concept just doesn't fit any teams' approach to the game. Over tweaking to force a change and we end up with the current Bloodseeker and Techies.
Three critical Techies buff in 6.84 that make him ridiculous: - Reduced Land Mines activation delay from 1.75 to 0.5. With 0 second cast and 0.3 delay to explosion after activation, the total time needed is only 0.8 seconds. This makes it a cast-able 300 (+75 per level) physical damage nuke melds range. This isn't just about Tusk combo, it's any melds hero trying to attack Techies.
- Reduced cooldown from 180/170/160/150 to 160/140/120/100. (Suicide Squad)
- Aghanim's Scepter now causes Minefield Sign to turn all Land Mines, Stasis Traps and Remotes Mines within the radius of the Minefield Sign immune to True Sight. Basically broken when used offensively cause defending team can't defend to defend their buildings. You can't move your buildings somewhere else.

What game featured a nyx?

I'm surprised Necro hasn't shown up in this heavy teamfight / siegepush meta. I think he fits in the same role as Pugna in the slow push comps that have occasionally shown up, with the added benefits of being able to take out an important target and not being made of paper.

Updated OP: -No changes after Groups Day 4 -Main Event Day 1: Jakiro was picked by MVP.H6, they lost to IG
|
That Jakiro pick was quite yolo tbh and hot6 got outclassed so hard that game. Troll is gona get picked for sure.
|
Bloodrage + Liquid Fire melting towers was funny though
|
|
Day 2 Update: Spectre and Sniper were picked by VG against C9 in game 1 and 2 respectively.
Still no weaver in sight
Day3: No changes
Day4: First game of the day and Morph finally appears. Hao rolled over MVP.
