I'm really excited about this! So back in February when I was at the TLHQ I was offered to come work for TL full time at the HQ and I accepted. So I'm moving down there in less than a month now. There's been a lot of stuff to figure out, like what to do with my apartment here in Stockholm (gonna rent it out) and what I can bring with me now and what I'll have to wait to bring with me on other trips up to Sweden (not going to bring my furniture and stuff.) Cancelling services like broadband, phone, electricity, and gas and what not. There's been a lot to think about and still a lot to do. Need to go over a lot of my stuff and throw away stuff I've been collecting over the years that I won't be needing or wanting any time soon.
So this isn't the first time for me living abroad, when I was 16 I went on a language trip for a year and lived in England (Kent) which was a learning experience in a lot of ways. I assume moving to The Netherlands will be like that and then some. A new culture, different customs, and obviously a whole new language I don't actually speak. Luckily most Dutch people speak great English so I'm sure I'll get by most of the time. I also expect the home sickness I had that time won't be that prominent this time since A) I'll be able to come visit my friends and family quite often B) I can go back home quite often too and C) I'm a bit more grown up and know more the reasons why you get it. (If you lose your social circle it can feel very lonely in a new place, add to that the increased stress from reorienting yourself when everyone around you is out of step with you in one or more ways because their expectations of normal behaviour is not the same as yours.)
My work will be project managing Liquipedia mainly, which is the same thing I've been doing up until now. I'm sure I'll also have a lot of other things on my plate though for TL stuff, I'm proficient at HTML/CSS and Photoshop, which usually can be handy. Having more time to dedicate to the wikis will be awesome and I already have a pretty long list of stuff I want to get done that haven't been made because it's not the really fun stuff to do.
So I guess this is all I wanted to say with this blog (hey I'm not even going to style it like my other ones cause lazy and stuff).... However if you wish to ask me anything feel free to do so and I'll try and answer most of the things (although not too offensive stuff or things breaking TL rules!)

Where are you going to live? Also, I don't think there will be a huge culture shock seeing as our cultures are fairly similar (basing this purely on Scandinavian football players playing in the Netherlands.. O_o)

Utrecht, at the TLHQ. I'm going to have R1CH as my flat mate, which is also pretty exciting. I like living with other people more than I like living alone, although both have their pros and cons obviously.

R1CH for your flat mate? Prepare yourself for coding questions then Sounds like fun. Congrats on the offer and make sure to spend time learning the culture/exploring around and don't overwork yourself to exhaustion lol.

Probably getting to know him even better, we've been working together on stuff since 2011 but you sort of learn much more about a person from living with them.

\Ü/ Awesome! Have fun with the TLHQ people!
My question is: how do you write ESPORTS? Do you plan on learning Dutch (more than just a few basic words to get by), or do you think you'l?

We all like to hate on our trains, but it is actually a pretty good system and like top 10 or so in the world. Compare that with driving during rush hour. I personally think it is really expensive, (compared to owning a car) but I am not sure how that ranks internationally. (of course try driving a car during rush hour) The country is too small for Japan-style high speed trains.
What does suck is paying for public transport as a tourist. But just this week there were new calls to make a change or to introduce a tourist card.
Scandinavians are best at learning Dutch, somehow.

Lots of replies from Dutchies and some from Utrecht it seems. What would you guys think about a TL meetup in Utrecht sometime? Doesn't have to be big just a bunch of people having a beer is all I would have in mind.

Congratulations, Salle! I hope it's a great experience.

I think the dutch community in almost any game is much more bigger than what it gets credit for Cool idea, although i'm not from Utrecht, NL is really small..
on topic;
Welcome! Depending from city to city the experience is different, but Utrecht is (from what i hear) a fun city. We drink much more beer than you Swedish folk, but we drink less homemade Schnapps. For the most part, I don't think the culture is that much different, but the internet/traffic and living costs are higher here. Drinking is alot cheaper however(though in the supermarkets it's only a bit less compared to sweden), so it gets evened out probably. We dutch are probably alot louder aswell... Sorry for that, i'm not sure why we're all so loud...

Congrats on living in our amazing little country . Utrecht is a nice city, especially the part around the Oude Gracht (Old Canal).
Oh and if there is a TL meetup in Utrecht I'd come by for sure.
Oh and btw, I hope you blog about your experiences in Holland! I'm always interested what foreign people think about typical Dutch things haha. Always fun to read.

Suck? As in do their job and then give you a blowjob on top of it?
I've only had good experience with trains in the Netherlands. Very timely, not too expensive, sufficiently comfortable. Plus there are those student discounts that you can share/someone can share with you.

The Hague is the best city in The Netherlands. Rotterdam is equally #1.

I found Amsterdam really overrated, to be honest. Although I recommend Rijks Museum to people who like museums. :-) The Hague is beautiful.
Fildun, what do you dislike about Rotterdam so much? ;p
|
Netherlands13552 Posts
Rotterdam was bombed to the brink of total destruction in WW2 so there's not a whole lot of culture left. I think that's why most people don't really like Rotterdam.

nah, Rotterdam has the best view. The Hague has the most to do.
Shoutout to Delft

Rotterdam is really ugly IMO. It's just a bunch of buildings that don't really fit together. Also for some reason I don't really like the people. I personally live in Amsterdam with a great view over the Amstel (river), so I also disagree about the view :p

You should go visit some other countries. I think the Netherlands is a country with some of the most uniform architecture. Both wthin a given town and across the whole country. Rotterdam looked pretty normal to me, compared to other cities. ^___^ In cities like Amsterdam I sometimes felt overwhelmed by how uniform and orderly everything was.
|
Copenhagen has insane uniformity to be frank.
Rotterdam looks the most modern, so I guess that's why I prefer it the most.

Doesn't want everyone to find out that he's a "nerd"? :D This stigma is unfortunately still a bit true in NL... (much more than in Sweden)

I think a meetup might be nice once again, we should make it a Barcraft! I went to a Barcraft in de Winkel van Sinkel back in 2011/12 once, was a nice atmosphere over there then !

In Liquipedia, do you think there'd be any value in adding a spoilered section to each unit information box, so that we can include stuff like turning speed, radius, acceleration, target priority, or other minutia?
|

Epoxide not finished with them, will see if I have time to do some long distance studies or just put it on ice. not too many courses left at any rate though. But the university studies will have to wait.
