Hi all! I will likely be interning in New York City this summer, and I was wondering whether anybody had advice about finding housing there. So far I'm considering NYU dorm housing, but I have heard that it's very difficult for non-NYU-students to get housing there. However it's a great location and the rates are comparatively way better than the surrounding area, so I've applied anyway.
Otherwise I'm pretty lost (Bay Area born and raised) so I'd really appreciate it if any of you guys had any tips or suggestions for finding housing!
Edit with more information: Location: Lower Manhattan area Transportation: public (no car) Budget: relatively cheap if possible

Bay area, so you're used to having your wallet completely fucked by rent prices. I recommend Harlem, deep Harlem. So far uptown you'll not be able to get a taxi, but in all honesty you should probably keep looking at craiglist and eye up areas like park slope in Brooklyn, or the surrounding area if you don't mind a bit of a commute to the city.

Where are you going to be interning (approximate location)? New York City is very big, so it may take a while to get from point A to point B if you don't plan. It's difficult to give you advice without knowing that, as well as if you will have a car, what type of budget you will be on, etc.

Thanks guys! It will be roughly Hudson Square/Southern Manhattan. I will not have a car, and I'm hoping to keep it pretty cheap if possible, say <$1500/mo, since I'll just be relocating temporarily and I'm not going to be pulling in massive dough or anything.

Brooklyn / Queens gonna probably be your best bet. If you can get a place close to one of the subway lines commuting won't be too bad.

A non NYU student can get housing from NYU?
If you can manage to pull that off that would be nice. I work in NoHo and I think it's by far the most interesting part of the city and obviously an easy commute to lower manhattan.

Ah thanks guys, I'll try looking on Brooklyn/Queens as well potentially.
Would Airbnb be a good potential search option?
And yeah @DannyJ: they offer lodging for summer interns and whatnot so I'm definitely looking into that haha.

Come live with me in London instead

Find someone to room with in Financial District, best value/money and you can walk to work if you find somewhere in the western part. Brooklyn/Queens is massive terror unless you're OK with taking 45 - 90 minutes to get to work.

Oh god, didn't realize the commute was that awful definitely noted then csheep :x I considered rooming with someone but I think I'd have a really hard time finding someone to room with. That being said I'll keep on the lookout, thanks!
London sounds fun :D but I'm unemployable anywhere so I'm super grateful for this opportunity anyway.
