It was a strange sentence that sounds so foreign to such a somber musical backdrop.
But as listened to it over and over I slowly began to realize that "Dogs" was a lifelong sexual confession. It's a song where a man tells you every epiphany that he's had with each significant partner. Every heartbreak, every sexual milestone is openly shown to you in such an emotionally vulnerable way. This is in no way some kind of musical showcase of his love life. This is a brutally honest disclosure of the lessons he learned and of the heartbreaks he endured to learn them.
I can't help but nod along with the wisdom he's gained throughout his forty-seven years of life. I've never felt such resonance when he speaks of the "complicated mess of sex and love" and I can't help but reflect upon my own sexual escapades and sit down with a drink filled with a regret and a cigarette smoldering with longing.
Thanks for telling me your story, Kozelek. It really is a complicated planet that we live on.
