i had a friend of mine ask me if i was excited for the new expansion. I didn't really know how to answer his question because I had mixed feelings about the announcement of LotV.
Do I want to come back? Can I be content with playing at a lower level than I did?
This becomes a bigger question of being able to return to something I was once great and only be able to resume it half-heartedly.
I started playing a bunch of hots games, but i'm still not sure.
maybe i've just changed.

I've seen many of my older Brood War friends from 2011 who used to be C-B rank come back to BW this year. They obviously didn't play as well as they did before and were rusty. I would manage to best them consistently, something I was nowhere close to doing previously which must've been demoralizing for them. They all left after maybe 2-4 days just wanting to get a dose of nostalgia. Some of them seemed committed and would try hard to regain their former skills and would stay for several weeks but they wouldn't improve as fast as they wanted. Some people move on mentally and can't get back into the game and it's no longer as fun anymore since they were playing at a lower level than they did before. Once you leave starcraft out of lack of interest it's only natural to not get back into the game. I think it's going be the same case for you, but you know the most obvious course of action here is to try it out and then stop playing it if you don't enjoy it.

You must return to fulfill your destiny and become a professional gamer.

You're either trying to go pro or playing for fun. Fun is subjective. The bottom line is are you able to fulfill one of those criteria? If not, find (or stay with) something else.
(I don't think playing games as a means of personal validation is healthy.)

Mentality is a big thing.
I still get angry when I lose as if i was still playing 20-30 games a day like I used to.
But lately, I am playing when I can and it's unhealthy to get frustrated because when I'm frustrated Im wasting my own time.. which I don't have a lot of :D
However, just because you're playing at a lower level to begin with doesn't mean you won't eventually surpass where you were. Breaks can be healthy for improvement because you sorta re-learn some mechanics and strategies and take things a little slower.

I normalling rage when I play a low amount of games, and when I increase it to 20-40+ games a day I won't have the mental ability to rage anymore

I don't think you'll enjoy yourself if you've set a goal of returning. I have fun when I play without expectations, but as soon as I've included a way for me to disappoint myself, merely by playing a video game I normally enjoy, gone is any sense of sheer enjoyment.

I think it's worth it to give LoTV a try so long as Blizzard actually implements a good portion of the changes. As mentioned, the game will be so new in most aspects that the fun of learning new strategies and just using OP stuff will return. Though I haven't played much HoTS since I got tired of the same compositions (for the most part), I'm still pretty nostalgic when I think about my WoL days. So much fun at the time and this can be a repeat imo so don't miss it!
