I wasn’t in a particularly good mood. Earlier in the day, I managed to throw away winning position twice in a row and drew both games. Winning a won game sure is hard. And I started this tourney off on a wrong foot, losing my first game in the Black side of Giuocco Piano where I messed up the R+P endgame.
So for the 2nd game, I’m in a pretty aggressive mood. It was similar to when you ladder in starcraft, and you get on this losing streak or something, so you just feel like 4 pool/BBS/proxy 2 gating the guy just so you can win. One of those moments where “how” doesn’t matter, you just need the result. That’s how I was feeling for this. I felt like throwing everything at my opponent and playing for mate, or go down in flames trying. I was White this time.

1 e4 e6
2 d4 d5
French defense. I was actually pretty happy to see him play the French, where since White’s pawns are naturally pointing at his Kingside, it will make the job that much easier for me. At least that’s what I hoped. We shall see.
3 Nc3 Nf6
4 Bg5 Be7
5 Bxf6 Bxf6
6 e5 Be7
7 Qg4
You can already see my caveman temper manifesting itself. I don’t care about looking good or sound, I just want blood at his doorstep.
7… O-O
8 Bd3
I’m not even going to castle this game. Just going to develop all my pieces as fast as possible (minus my a1 Rook) and throw them at his king and look dangerous.
8… f5
My opponent must have smelled what’s up, and decides to throw a little wrench in my work, shutting off my bishop. But I wasn’t going to be denied.
9 Qg3 c5
Typical French break. I don’t care about it for the moment… or perhaps the entire game.
10 Nf3 Nc6
11 h4
Yup, let the attack begin, caveman style.
11… cxd4
Ehh.. who cares, I wanted to bring my knight to the kingside anyway.
12 Ne2 Qa5+
My opponent, “punishing” me for grossly violating the basic principle, do not leave your king in the middle. But, this is but a small inconvenience that I was prepared for when I decided to be the Kwanro-incarnate for this game.
13 Kf1 Qb6
14 Rb1 Bd7
15 Ng5
Ah yes… getting closer to busting his door open. Boy was I feeling aggressive.
15… Rac8
Continuing his normal development. My opponent clearly underestimates my intent.
16 Nf4 Nxe5
There goes another pawn. Yeah who cares? I’m 2 pawns down now, but I’m more worried about the fact that his knight is now sitting beautifully on e5, covering some important squares around his king than being down 2 pawns.
17 h5
Attack must continue. There can be no great victory, if there is no adversity. I must charge! Charge! Charge!
17… Nxd3
This move proved to me that my opponent, for sure, didn’t understand just how hell-bent I was in doing whatever possible to checkmate him here and now. He voluntarily trades off his important knight for my useless bishop. I can almost feel his thought process since I was in his shoes many times. Bishop pair = good. Trade pieces when ahead = good.
18 cxd3 Qa6
Maybe he wants to win the a pawn? Maybe the d pawn at some point? His intent matters very little to me, because the time has come.
19 Nxh7!
Open the gate Proximo!!!
19… Kxh7
Not taking the sacrifice would have made thing a bit more tricky for me, but he was going to be under some serious attack either way, so he might as well take what he can and hope he can weather the storm.
20 Qg6+
I can feel it! This is going to be over!!!!!!
20… Kg8
21 h6!
Mate in 1 pal. My fiery determination cannot be denied.
21… Bf6
Rf7 probably offered better resistance. I was trying to calculate how to proceed after Rf7, but Bf6 I think makes my life a little bit easier.
22 Rd1
I need to free up my knight from defensive duty so he can participate in the attack. Then I shall be able to truly finish him off.
22… Be8
Attempting to expel the menace at his front door. But unfortunately for him, I didn’t come all the way here just so I can retreat at the last second.
23 h7+!
A pawn of a humble origin finally makes his mark in this battle.
23… Kh8
The only move.
24 Qxe8!!
I solved puzzles of position like these so many times, it was actually kind of surreal to see it happen in real game. I’m going to… semi-smother mate the poor guy, something I’ve never been able to do outside of puzzle books.
24… g5
My opponent spent basically all his time minus 3 minutes on what to play here, and came up with what probably is the best move, g5. But here, it was only delaying the inevitable. I may have been denied the semi-smothered mate, but his King is still at my mercy.
25. Ng6+ Kg7
26 Nxf8!!
BINGO! The nail in the coffin, cutting his R completely off from the queening square.
26… Rxe8??
He only had something like 2 minutes at this point, and when you’re under checkmating situation along with time trouble, anything can happen, so I don’t blame him. This move basically loses him on the spot, but he can take comfort in that his “alternative” only serves in delaying the inevitable.
27 h8=Q+ Kf7
28 Rh7+ 1-0
He cannot stop the mate.
Boy oh boy, I’ve never gone this caveman before. Most of my wins are by me winning a pawn there or winning a piece here and liquidating to an endgame, so it certainly feels exhilarating to win in this fashion, though I’ll have to admit that it wasn’t without the help of my opponent who made some dubious moves. But that is how the cookie crumbles.
Hope you enjoyed folks, I certainly did
