Like a lot of people I played Magic when I was young, maybe 4th-6th grade or so. Recently my brother got back into it big time, he plays Friday Night Magic and all that. So I got DotP14 on Steam, and also got MTGO with the starter set of 640 cards, although I haven't played MTGO yet, only spectated a couple games.
And wow is it fun! As you start to get into it, and start to "see" the strategy, what's the best next move, etc, it just has an awesomeness to it. Just the idea of a turn-based card game is fun too. I still am a beginner and there is of course an incredible amount to learn. It seems there's much more to the game, more abilities and everything since I last played. And there are sooo many cards, I just wonder if I'll even have the time to learn everything. Because I still spend most of my time with Starcraft, and even when I play Magic, after a couple games I go back to Starcraft.
Speaking of which, there's something really fun and switching back and forth between these two games. Magic is slower paced, at least DotP14 is, so it's kind of a nice break to the frenetic gameplay of SC2, while still being a fun strategy game. I think the two games complement each other well.
I also "rediscovered" GSL and watching SC2 tourneys and streams. For a long time, maybe a year and a half, I still played the game a lot but just didn't watch. So now I switch around between watching & playing SC2 & Magic. Quite fun. Guess I won't have time for all those other awesome games I got but never finished lol...Rome Total War 2, Thief, GT6.
Gaming is awesome . At the same time I realize I'd have a healthier lifestyle if I did some things differently. But hey, girls are in the picture now, so that feels like enough LOL.

DotP14 was awesome. Wasted well over 60 hours on that game.
Have you looked into hearthstone? If you do, consider checking out liquidhearth.
Also you can't mention girls and not write a grill blog.

try giving Netrunner a shot instead, way better imo.
And much fewer cards, obscure rules etc

For MTGO what helped me a lot in the beginning was to only play block formats (THC block) the card pool is way smaller, there are some strange inbalances there but atleast after couple of games you already know what the oponnent is probably playing and how to adapt to it.

I had a great run on MTG last summer, it is such a damn good game. After years of online gaming, it felt great to play a game in person and meet other people. Unfortunately, the price tag was a bit high so I got out of it.
Reconsidering getting back into it with my new position and pay though.

I love MTGO but I only really liked draft format. Not sure why but just always appealed
Strangely in Hearthstone I prefer constructed to Arena.

Of course. I've always enjoyed M:TG from a cerebral perspective, and I bought those cards 14 years ago in high school. Hell, my 30 year old friend still dusts off his Yugioh once in a while to play it. What's the difference between playing card games like that and poker or board games like monopoly, imo?

Recently I've gotten even more into Magic, switching from DotP to MTGO. First I got a RDW deck and now Yuuya Watanabe's Jeskai Tokens deck. It's been really cool, I've just kind of dived right into the game and found something that is very deep and fun to play. I only play standard and I like how there are parallels with Starcraft, in that there's a metagame, a player will come out with a new strategy for a tournament and then people will copy it, and there is a professional scene with seemingly similar viewer numbers and winnings to Starcraft.
I've played in 6 or 7 standard dailies now and have mostly gone 2-2, 1-3 once and 3-1 once. I have to say I think I've had less success with Jeskai Tokens than RDW. I'm not sure if I'm not playing the deck right, or if it just doesn't have the consistency and "solidness" that other top tier decks have. It seems Whip decks and Abzan midrange decks have so many deadly threats that I find myself struggling to remove everything they have, and they just keep bringing them out. But, this deck is very fun to play with its diversity.
Sideboarding is something I have difficulty with, because while I know what cards might be good to bring in, I also don't want to get rid of any of the cards I have. My deck's sideboard is all control, and the deck attempts to do a little of everything so it is difficult to figure out how to balance each aspect - control, threats in the form of small creatures and burn, and Jeskai Ascendancy and Treasure Cruise for late-game viability.
I think I will get a couple different variations of Jeskai, maybe Jeskai Control and Jeskai Tempo. That would be really fun to have all three different decks to play.
Feel free to add me as Doodsmack on MTGO if anyone wants to play .
