So I had a day off university like any Tuesday this semester, and I have an assignment due this Friday. Despite playing more than I should have on Monday, I told myself to use my time on Tuesday and work harder.
What happened? I went to bed late, I woke up late like 12:30 pm, played SC2, then I told myself I would play a few more games to get some levels as protoss. Yes, I've bought HotS recently. Some break time, sc2 again... I actually spent half an hour doing my assignment.
So here I'm, it's 4 AM, I'm going to bed late again although I was trying to fall asleep for half an hour earlier. What did I achieve today? Absolutely nothing but getting lvl 30 and the zealot skin & Zeratul's portrait.
I really dislike myself for not being focused on what I really need to do. I tell myself every time that the next day would be different but we all know how this usually ends up.
So if you have any advice, let me know guys.
Thanks

I don't know, man. If you figure it out, let me know.

There are a few things that you need to know. 1- I've procrastinated my whole life and have always done well. If you can manage it, it's fine, but it feels horrible before deadlines. 2- Last semester, I was done writing a 25 pages paper literally a month before it was due. If you've never done this, you don't know how liberating it feels. If you take 5 classes and you clear one out really early, it leaves you a LOT more time to procrastinate with your other classes.
Life is about striking a good balance between the happiness that comes with not doing your shit and the liberty and freedom that comes with having done it.
Lastly, I learned recently that there's a political party in Bulgaria that's named Ataka. That's something! :X

I'll tell you why you need to fix this ASAP. Wasted 2 years of my life failing uni courses because of procrastination, now I have a huge debt and nothing to show for it.
The only tip I can remember is try working on your assignment for 5minutes with no distractions. If you finish the 5 mins either do another 5 or go play SC2 for 1 game. Then do the 5 min thing again but try to do 2 blocks of 5 mins.

I've been like this for the last few years as well, sometimes I think I need electro-shock therapy.

Blogging on TL probably isn't the best start to solving your procrastination LOL, you've only got a few days left to finish that assignment

Been trying to fix this for years.
At one point I had someone to really look forward to seeing and that helped. Other than that I've been going to BK to study because there are people there and no internet and it's open 24/7 Been working decently.
Otherwise I study with friends.

I did the same thing. Depends what helps you. I found making a list and making it a large part of my desktop background helped, since that way i cant forget about it and i feel good when i cross stuff off of the list. Getting off the computer and going to a quiet place in a library would have helped me immensely but fuck that. If youre still doing well in classes youre fine, but if you start falling behind you should get help.

Queue up another game. Maybe the guilt will push you over.

Hmm I've been slow and steady haven't played anything in a while. If anything I'm getting more focused.

I also have problems with procrastination that I need to fix. But I'll leave that for later, do you guys know any good video games that are coming out?

What I do is I just go and watch trailers to games in 2013. I get to see awesome trailers and see what new games are available. You should do that too OP.

Set yourself reasonable goals.
i.e. "I get up at 9, then procrastinate for 1 hour, then work until 12, then procrastinate for 2 hours, then do more work for 3hours and quit whenever I want after 5". Use alarm clocks for those times. Do you have access to your router? Block certain websites at those times. Break down your assignments into smaller parts. Focus on getting 1 part done at a time. Use those as goals "I want to do X and Y today, if I'm motivated & have time I'll do Z as well".
Realize when you have absolutely no motivation to work. It's important that you at least try to do the assignment for a minimum of 5minutes. If you then realize it - quit. Set yourself another time (1-2 hours from now, the next day) and enjoy (!) your free time. If you want to watch a movie, or play starcraft but you feel guilty because you "should" work so only browse stupid internet sites: Watch that movie or play Starcraft - don't procrastinate on stupid stuff.

As someone who has been procrastinating all his life with almost every one of my assignments ending up with an allnighter and a sprint from the library printer to whatever letterbox I had to drop it off in (when not uploaded online 30secs before deadline), I can only sympathize. As I'm in my last year of uni and working at the same time I really don't have time to procrastinate, but I do anyhow. Recently what has worked best for me in combating is doing microscopic steps. If you have a 3000 word assignment, make yourself write 100 words before you go play some SC2. After 3 games make yourself write another 50 or 100, or read one journal article. Basically the smaller the increments you break it down into the better. Try starting an assignment like this on the first day you get it, even if you just get the title and download some journals, you're doing something. Someone else mentioned this, but for the one time in my life I did it I was so happy, FINISHING something before you're in a deadline rush is the most relaxing thing ever.
Anyway I wish you all the best, procrastination is truly a more common thing than most people care to think, but being able to force yourself to do stuff usually depends on how big your fear of failure is.

one brutal method that i have used in the past is write a list of all the things you have to do, even the small things, and it will begin to get bigger and bigger until you feel like you absolutely have to do it. Not a pleasant way to get stuff done but i can say from experience it works. Another way is to set up a reward system. Like after every page eat a piece of chocolate and after 15 pieces of chocolate play a game of sc2, but that way you will get fat so i don't recommend it. I'm still a procrastinator but at college the best method i have found out of all the ones that have failed is go to the library and work there. Can't play games, can only work. Makes me work quicker so i can get back and play games but, more importantly, I get the work done. Of course comes the issue with actually getting to the library but that is just something that either happens or not :D
