About the college stuff: You want to be treated like an adult? Then behave like one. It is extremely disrespectful towards your professor to regularly be late and the same goes for using your phone. You signed up for those classes, so you must be interested in them, otherwise it does not make sense. If you don't like lectures, don't sign up for them. If the prof gives you a syllabus in the first week where is says that there is an attendance policy and you don't like it, then just drop the class. There is actually a great amount of work and effort necessary to host a class, so show a little respect towards your prof.

another way of looking at it is the rest of you is so skinny that it makes your belly look fat...The only way you are going to make your belly even "flatter" is by working your core. No one is born with a 6 pac

Well, there are arguments for curve grading as well though.
In the workforce, you are often judge based on the performance of others. Whether or not you get promoted is often based if you are the best candidate among all the other employees being considered. Likewise for being laid off and cut.
This is also the case for interviews. You aren't interviewing to reach a certain skill, but to be better than enough of the other applicants to get a job.
In that regard, curve grading might not necessarily be the best for a purely educational and learning to learn perspective, but it does simulate the real world in certain ways pretty well.

Thats because in a job interview your goal is to find the best candidate for a certain position. So yes, you are comparing candidates among themselfs. A class isnt trying to find the best students, its trying to ascertain whether all students learned enough to pass the test. Its comparing students with a certain level of knowledge, and that level of knowledge doesnt change if you have a group of good students or bad students. If a class has a lot of good students, they all deserve good grades. If a class has a lot of bad students, they all deserve bad grades.
Grading on a curve can be a cop out if you do bad tests. If you cant mantain a stable level of difficulty on your tests or if they are not well correlated to the knowledge that certain class should require for each grade, using a curve is probally better. Grading on a curve works on exams with diferent levels of difficulty but assumes all classes have the same kind of student. Regular grading requires the teacher to perform fair tests, which quite often isnt the case.

Sometimes a class is trying to find the best students. Occasionally the students will care about actually learning, but most times it's just about the grades. Learning the material is often just a positive side effect of getting a good grade.

Your professor isn't a douchebag. If you're consistently late without a good reason, then your laziness deserves to be punished. And if you have the audacity to sit in class and ignore your professor and surroundings by being on your phone (regardless of what you were checking on your phone), then you deserve to be called out on it. Just wait out the hour for class to end, and then check your messages.
I'd be just as frustrated with you if I was your professor, and if he doesn't want to curve the grades, he doesn't have to.

i had a professor that stopped what he was doing anytime someone came in late.
Then he pulled the poor student in front of the other 300 people and questioned her/him about when they woke up, what trasnportation they used, how it comes they are late, how they could improve it.
It was hilarious, noone managed to sneak in unseen.
Oh and curve notes are stupid, most my classes had like 20% best grade, then equal distribution and then 50-80% failed.
Curved would punish most people with the best grade as half of them would get downgraded and would reward the laziesby upping the grades significantly.
